Got 20,000 miles on my S&S 124" in my 08' Electra Glide with S&S 635HO cams and their 91cc heads CNC ported by Rick Ward. Dyno 135hp/146tq! Torque peaking @4000 rpms which is right where I want it! Great bagger setup! Now I didn't cut any corners. I have a S&S TC3 cam plate and oil pump set at 40 psi, Screamin Eagle compensator, Barnett billet clutch basket, Barnett Scorpion clutch with a lockup pressure plate, HPI 62mm TB, 6.7 g/s injectors, Screamin Eagle Heavy Breather air cleaner and a D&D Boarzilla exhaust. Oh and I run 2 oil coolers and the oil temp never exceeds 210°f. I did it right! It was a setup I saved up for 8 years and I finally captured my dream! It gets 40 mpg and I absolutely love it! Now I will be replacing lifters every 20k miles but that's part of the whole thing.
@jayonez1373 ай бұрын
I’m considering a 124 for my 14 street glide performance bagger build. However, changing lifters every 20,000 miles would suck for me because I put 20,000 miles on pretty damn quick. That’s two seasons for me and I don’t ride from November through March when we have winter and salt on the roads
@gerrybubenzer56772 ай бұрын
why do you have to change lifters every 20k
@7BunBunerGoldRidesАй бұрын
@@gerrybubenzer5677 I can answer that. The tension on your lifters, tappets from the performance valve springs will cause them to fail. Had to do that with my Screaming Eagle 110 kit. If you don't, you will have catastrophic engine failure!!! High lift cams above 585 lift need performance valve springs so you won't float valves. That's why on my new engine build I went with a S&S 551 bolt on cam and using Fueling 585 lift valve springs, so will not have to change them out so often. Thinking about changing them at 50,000 miles now. I ride over 20,000 miles a year and live in Colorado. Changing them is a pain but necessary!

I agree. To me, building a harley and having it operate as near to flawless as possible, was a right of passage. Growing up seeing the guys that had bikes and couldn't ever keep them running well and seeing the guys that had highly modified bikes that seemed to always be running good without failure, I always new it had alot to do with the operator. Although for me, while growing up, those guys were riding mostly shovels and a handful of evos. Regardless, it had been a goal of mine since I was small, to one day have a harley, not be stock, and have all systems operating concert.

Indeed I've found that a lot of people go build their motor for highest HP numbers or two. possible thinking big is better but in really real riding that duffers from dragstrip conditions where wife open throttle and high rpm work the street daily ride stop lights and traffick which we all ride far differe from the drag strip so some times the giant dyno numbers and super high lift cams are not always the ticket to winning the race or having a reliable and pleasant running bike . Giant big lift and big duration. Cams make hard starting temperamental and rough idling I'll masnneredbeasts requiring often times are hear sensitive and unreliable hard on. Valvetrain and lifters etc compression as well high compression motions aerexse sitivr to high temeraturesand run hotter by nature and in that step subject to pre ignition and knock which is hell in pistons and all the rest big bore long strings motors make killer tourque but the long stroke calls for shorter piston skirts and particularly the rear cylinder additional force ends up on the outside skirt which is not much there your piston egg shaped and ends up rattliing down the bore All this is realitive to the next which asks what is the style of riding to be done over half the time what room are you gonna use it st and the weight of which your trying to propel. A bagger loaded up with a large guy and all his gear is a heavy beast add a huge behramouth of s chick on back and you probably don't want to concern your self with any over5000 k rpm ho numbers cuz you'll never get it there. I have an S&S 124 HC Twin Cam crate motor in my 2015 Street Glide with 47,000 miles on it. I've been all over the US on multiple trips in 30 to 108 degree weather and have had minimal issues with this engine. I can cruise between 80 and 125 MPH all day in the western states and this engine loves it, yet it has good manners in stop and go traffic. Maintenance is the key to reliability and longevity with these engines. I do my own work and make sure things are right between trips. I took the heads off at 20,000 miles to look it over. Although things didn't look bad, I honed the cylinders, put new piston rings on and replaced the valve springs and seals while it was apart. I also replaced the lifters at the same time. I viewed that as cheap insurance. Like this guy said, a clutch upgrade, air cleaner, exhaust, ignition, throttle body, and a bigger oil tank were all necessities. I also change the oil every 2500 miles and use 20-50 synthetic. I have shut it down a few times in stop and go traffic on 95 degree days when the factory head temperature sensor hit 330 degrees to prevent possible damage to the engine, but I do not have an extra oil cooler or head fans like this guy does. I chose not to spend the money for those things and just watch the temperature in tough conditions. I have not converted to chain drive and I'm running my original belt, but I don't do burnouts, 2nd gear wheelies and stuff like that. I'm running a 2 into 1 exhaust made by Khromeworks and I have to tell you, it sounds pretty good going over the Rocky Mountains at the higher RPM's. My engine dynoed 148 horsepower and 142 lbs. of torque. I had some head work done by MegaFlo to raise the horsepower a bit. No regrets, I would recommend this engine to anyone who wants to enjoy serious power and is mindful of regular maintenance.
