Your Twin Cam 88 Can Be Much More Than A 95 Cubic Inch

The solution for more power on a Twin Cam 88 has long been a 95ci bolt on big bore kit. But why settle for a 95 incher when the aftermarket offers bolt on kits all the way up to 100 cubic inches! You've got some serious options with bolt on kits that require no case boring. Fuel Moto, S&S and Revolution Performance offer competitive kits that make more reliable power than the Screamin Eagle 95 bolt on big bore.

Would you stay with a 95 inch kit or go with the 97, 98 or even the 100 inch Sidewinder bolt on?

As I’ve posted before I did do the SE 95 set up on my 2002 FXDL. I did add an oil cooler. The power is decent and the motor has been unbelievably reliable. I think if I was going to upgrade again that S&S 100 Sidewinder Kit looks mean and super easy. Also fairly cheap.

I enjoyed you video on the 88". I went with S&S Sidewinder 100" with screaming eagle 254E cams, at the time of the build the fly wheels were bad . They were sent out to Dark Horse crank works . They repaired them lighten& trued them .I put the 254E cams in myself .At the time of cams I had it on the Dyno, It tuned out at 79.7 hp & 80.5 ft lb of torq . It also had Fuel injectors upgraded to the 29 degree also fueling cam plate & high volume oil pump. I also put in the screaming eagle Sprocket compensator , the Harley variable pressure plate in the clutch in prep for the 100" . I don't know the what the out put is right now as I also upgraded the ECM to the thunder Max. I scared the hell out of a 117cu road glide one night would have smoked him but broke my clutch cable . I did this build on a 2006 Dyna Streetbob . my build is about a year old .

I bought an auction 99 road king that appears to have a bunch of aftermarket done to it. How do I identify the heads, Pistons, pushrods, cams, etc to help me determine my starting point?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 жыл бұрын
Having no history on the bike that's tough, if there's not any visual identification or numbers you'd have to pull the engine down. The cam is likely marked, if you know what cam is in there you can make some determinations. The cam is going to be spec'd for certain compression ratios and engine bore size, this will give you some clues as to what has been done. You could run a camera down the spark plug holes and look at the pistons. If the pistons are flat top they are stock, if they have a dish they are high compression. But yeah, taking the motor down and measuring the bore, head gasket, and examining the heads to see if there is any porting is about the best you can do.

@@GixxerFoo I agree with you, I've been doing this for a number of years and I have less than 6 vendors that are extremely reputable in the aftermarket world. (It fits like it should and everything I need is included in the package) so I've learned I don't mind paying the couple extra bucks for quality and service. HD upgrades can be expensive and I can't tell you how many times I talk to people that have ordered stuff that didn't give you everything you need. Point being that's how some vendors can offer it at a less price. (That's been my experience) As far as I'm concerned you rank right up there with doc Harley. People continuing to accept Harley crap ass quality will never make them get better as long as Harley-Davidson knows that its customers will Rectify all of their economic shortcomings in their Motors will continue for them to do so. Watching your channel has caused me to spend a little bit of money. I have 2000 Heritage Soft-tail (carbureted) which started out pretty much stock. First I upgraded the cam plate with a Screamin Eagle setup and an S&S 509 cam set. To get it to start and idle a little better I re-jetted the carb and exposed the air/fuel mixture adjustment screw and adjusted that. I was somewhat happy with the results but like most Harley riders I thought I could get more out of the old girl. I then saw this video and purchased the S&S 100 kit. I had this installed by a credible Harley mechanic, he also sent the heads off for refurbishment and some porting. He also suggested installing Twin Tec ignition module and oil cooler which I have also done as well as a better air cleaner. It wasn't loud enough so put a set of Vance and Hines 2 into 2 pipes on it. With all that I'm still not very impressed with the performance. I haven't had it dyno tested, so I can't give any specifics. It starts good but I can tell a cam with a compression release would nice. Other than buying a bigger bike I'm sure what else I can do, plus my wife would kill me. I've also considered a Mikuni carb but can't handle anymore disappointment. Any Ideas?

If you only want to do the big bore kit with fuel moto sending in your cylinders runs you about 700 bucks. That's them boring out your factory cylinders selling you the piston head and base gaskets and then return shipping.

That's the best way to do it honestly, Hammer Performance does that too. Hammer's thoughts are they bore your cylinder out to the max, ride it till it's wore out, and buy some new twin cam cylinders for about $280 each. It's a huge savings over the kits just boring your factory cylinders.

To get a 110 out of that motor you would have put in the 4.75 crank, then you'd have to bore the cases to accept the 4.0 inch bore cylinders. May be a stretch on a set of 88 cases though due to the case thickness but a bolt on set of 4.0 inch bore cylinders made to fit a 103 should work.

Meanwhile if you read the fine print none of these modifications our street legal. If your state decide to enact emission control test on your motorcycle you we'll flunk and then you have to put everything back to stock just to pass the yearly test. I knew guys in England and in Europe that would save to stock pipes and when the time came for them to have their mot done they would put the quiet pipes back on their motorcycles and then take them off after they passed their Mot.

I like the Twin Cam B engines. They are pretty smooth-running; and beside a little parasitic power loss due to the counterbalancers; it can still become a reliable and powerful engine. I have a pal who has a Deuce. He had head work performed (Zippers) and cams (Zippers) and H-D's 95 cu. in. kit. A hydraulic cam tensioner was added. A SuperTrapp exhaust was installed. He and his wife have ridden the bike from Ohio to CA and it's a daily rider -- no problems whatsoever.
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 4 жыл бұрын
Those B engines are awesome, the balancer system actually worked too well and caused issues with the transmission to fall between gears. They had to give it some vibration to help complete shifts. The loss is only maybe 2 horsepower at wide open throttle with balancer.

The case bore is smaller on the 88 so the drop on jugs won't fit the 88. You'd need to go with 95 inch cylinders and then a stroker crank. The 100 inch drop on kit the biggest one out there for the 88 with the stock crank.

@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah they will bolt up and they actually flow a lot better, even the stock 103 heads would be a big improvement. The 100" kit is made to work with the stock 88 heads so the 103 heads will bolt right on, you'll just have to use late model flanges on the intake. You can plug the ACR's or wire them to the starter solenoid, maybe put some manual ACR's in there if you want.

SE ignition for cams and big bore kit. Now Harley has Factory ported heads that keep compression stock as 203 cams need to stay under 9.5 static . I feel this is a good upgrade for 88 or 95 milled motors. I really comes on around 60 mph. However t don't do much hyw driving. My friend I would like to thank you, you have save me money dealing with my 2006 Road King 88 engine. I have owned four HD from 2006 RK, Electric Guilds to two Harleys Trikes 2016 and 2018. I still have my 06 Road King and of all the bikes I stated a second ago I love my 88 more then the others. I still have the 06 RK because I still LOVE the American Dream, about a month ago I traded my 2018 trike for a Honda Goldwing DCT, and my reason for the trade is because I was so tired of investment of my money into two bikes with the problem being the M8 not the 88 RK. I want to travel Long distance without the worry of a HD brake down. The RK is for small short trips around town and the GW is for long distance trips. In short and again thank you for your information that is power to customers owners of HD products, other upgrades products and last I STILL LOVE HARLEY-DAVISON MOTORCYCLES

The 98 inchers make great power and you don't have to bore the cases, just my opinion but 98's will run right up there with a 107. The shop that did the work has long closed and I cant seem to get any records. Screaming eagle pipes staggered and screaming eagle intake on it. I assume it must have gotten a tune. I would like to put on the SS 100 sidewinder kit that comes with cams for high torque. I really like the idea of 100 hp and 100 plus torque. I'm not a racer by any stretch just a cruiser but I'm kind of over my friends pulling away from me with their Road kings, Street glides and Road glides. I mean I am 100 pounds lighter right? So I also like the sound of the screaming eagle pipes on it (amazing sound) and don't really want to spend extra money on 2 into 1 exhaust if I can help it. How much torque would I be giving up to keep the exhaust? Is that ok or do I really need to change them? Also do I need new cam tensioners and an oil cooler for this upgrade? What would you do to kick it up to this decade without breaking the bank and also keep the reliability? Also do I need to also get the frame brace or replace the engine mounts if I add torque- or can the old frame handle it? And how much about would I have to pay in to get all this work done?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo Жыл бұрын
You wouldn't really give up much if anything with the SE exhaust of that era, with the factory header it's really the best of both worlds. You get the sound of a 2 into 2 with the power of a 2 into 1. 2006 Dyna already has the hydraulic tensioners, they only did that on the Dyna that year. The cases are basically 96 cases with a bore for 88 cylinders and the heads are what basically later became the heads of the 96. Great year for the dyna! The 100 kit will drop and you'll want a good cam too, S&S 585 is a good Dyna cam or a Wood TW-555 is a killer Dyna cam. Hard to say what it would cost but the 100 kit about 1200, figure about 3 to 400 for a cam. Labor l am ball parking 2,000. Gaskets, oil etc, 300, and a dyno tune about 3 to 400. Total ball park guess l would say ridiculously high 4500. But indy shop with a can tune maybe around 3500.

You seem to know a lot about these motors... i came across a comment made by another youtuber that threw me for a loop the other day... he said (and he may just be retelling what the HD repair tech told him) that the TC motor he had (cant remember if it was an 88 or 96 but a TC motor nonetheless) failed catastrophically due to cam bearing walk and was told that the bearings could not be removed the whole crank case had to be replaced. this kinda sounded like a bold face lie to me because i've seen bearing puller tools and even watched several videos of bearings being pulled. Perhaps the tech was either conflating the fact that it couldnt be pulled bc it had already failed and needed a new crank anyways or what... but i've always known these bearings to be able to be inspected/pulled/replaced as needed. Any thoughts?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
What he said is true in a extreme case, it is possible with a cam bearing failure that it can damage the cases. If the cams walk and unseats the crank bearing they can wollar out the cases where they are pressed. A good machinist can do a lot with a set of beat up cases but by that time it would cost as much or more just to get a aftermarket set that's better than factory. The same thing can happen with the crankshaft too. It's a very rare thing to see but it has happened.

@@drwombat Absolutely, with a cam swap it's just cheap insurance to go ahead and change those bearings out and go to a much nicer after market bearing. Bearings do fail, due to age or manufacturing defect but it's not often, they will normally last the life of the engine. Sportsters don't even use cam bearings, they have brass bushings and they last the life of the engine as well.

Dollar for dollar I went with Hammer Performance. 98 in. mild cam, mild porting, 9 1/2 to 1. V&H Shorties, Dyno Jet tune. HP and torque just over 100hp. 05 Softail very quick.

That's the way to do it, not a lot of people know Hammer does work on big twins. They are really known for their Sportster exploits, it's a huge savings having them bore your cylinders like that. I like that they are up front about boring to a 98 being a one time deal, a lot of places won't tell you that.

On the 100 inch kit do you need to replace the cam plate oil pump and bearings ?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 3 жыл бұрын
You don't absolutely have to replace them, you can run the stock units but it's not a bad idea to upgrade if you can swing it.

what about the bottom end? How will this extra HP and torque affect the crank?
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 4 жыл бұрын
It won't hurt the crank, if you ride it sensibly and not beat on it. It's just like anything if you take care of it, it will last many years and miles.

The stroke of the 88 is shorter than the 96 inch motor, when you add the big bore cylinders it becomes a 95 with the 88's crank.

Im thinking about buying a ‘01 flhrc w/13,500 miles one owner. Would I be good to ride it a while before installing the hydraulic tensioner kit? Or do I take the cover off and inspect as soon as I get it home regardless? Thanks for the info I’ve learned a lot
@GixxerFoo
@GixxerFoo 4 жыл бұрын
If it were me, l would pop the cover and check it out. That inner tensioner is hard to see, you can get a peak at it with a inspection camera though. Those chain tensioners are such a dice roll as some failed so early and others went 50k. I know l would sleep better knowing where they are for wear.
@rgh622
@rgh622 4 жыл бұрын
A tip on peaking at that inside tensioner shoe. Use a dental mirror, you know the little round mirror on a stick? If you pull the shoe back and pin it in place you can use a flashlight and mirror and have a good look at the wear pattern. See here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y57ScquHpJxgZ7M

Would you feel safe recommending one of these kits for a 06 Electra glide ultra classic ? Feel safe with out doing bottom end? And which can if not included in kit do you recommend . Right now I’m stock besides slip ons and a air intake kit and a Vance and Hines Fuelpak. I just bought the bike about a month ago 41,000 miles on I do have a warranty on the bike .

I have a 2003 FXD Superglide. Put the S&S 100 kit in along with Screaming Eagle heads and 50 mm carb. It has been ten years now, and the bike still rips with absolutely no problem. It is a solid combination.

Generally you would think bolting on a kit like that is going to decrease reliability. My opinion has always been just the opposite, if you keep it reasonable. Now if you put a monster cam and insane compression that's where it gets iffy.
