@ Javert - I was REALLY looking forward to how the 24 masks were "layered" and why so many... So I'll ask here okay? 1. What's the decision point / best practice / reasoning for breaking something up vs. not? 2. for example, why is Tim's hat 3 layers and not 2 -- top and brim? 3. And when tracking Emily's fingers, (or the hat), did you track her forearm and link the fingers ( or for the hat, the top and then the brims)? And an extra credit / not on this clip question: 4. Would you split up parts of something in the foreground you wanted to remove in the same way? I had a hard time removing a motorbike mirror from the foreground of a somewhat dimly lit but otherwise useful pan across another motorbike. The mask would deflect out of shape when it exited the frame, which was fixed with lots of keyframes, but I still ended up with too many artefacts (bad remove) and gave up -- cut the whole shot a bit early to avoid the offending mirror! Would tracking the "bulb" of the mirror separately from the "stalk" have helped?
@FXhome6 жыл бұрын
Rotoscoping in pieces is much easier than trying to do it all at once. In general I don't want to have to handle a spline with more than 10 points at a time; if you were to draw a single shape around a whole person, that means that you could be adjusting 30+ points every single frame. Tim's hat was 3 shapes because the left and right brim move on their own, into different shapes. I did not track any of the hat pieces because of how much they shift perspective. I tracked each of Emily's fingers separately, since they rotate on their own. I'm not sure about your remove question- might want to post on the Forum with more detail and an example video to get some help if you still need it. -Javert

Thank you Javert...GREAT tutorial. My question is: once the foreground subjects are rotoscoped, can you delete them? And if so, is there a hole where they used to be? How do you remove them and keep the background intact? Do you need a separate shot of the trees without the 2 actors to fill in the hole? Any help with removing foreground elements keeping the background intact would be incredibly helpful. Thanks so much in advance.
@FXhome2 жыл бұрын
Yes, there would be a hole if you cut out the actors after roto'ing them. You would need to have either filmed a clean plate (background without actors) and fill in the gaps or create a new clean plate using pieces where the actors weren't covering the environment. The former is much easier to do. - Javert

How important is it for the layers to overlap even if nothing in my video overlaps the other part of the object? So I'm making a video game character rotoscope and I have like a horn out of the character is it important for each sub section of the entire character to overlap as you see in this video?
@FXhome6 жыл бұрын
Without having seen the video game character, I would say pretty important- if the layers don't overlap, there will be holes in your rotoscope. Mocha will only keep the video that is contained in the shapes. - Javert

HitFilm, Day by Day popularity is increasing pls provide various tools now for Pro and Express version :) Learn from other softwares how their tools are, and try to make them in HitFilm , for example Optical Flow is the option to create slow motion videos .. or Math coding tool like Adobe .... :)

Hitfilm pro (I don't know if Express has it or not) has "Motion Blur" in the Effects panel in the "Blurs" folder (not the same as motion blur option in the comps panel). It creates intermediate frames that are composed of the previous and succeeding frames, which I believe is what PR Optical flow does. You need to play with Shutter angle and Shutter Phase (I used 180 and 90) as the defaults don't work very well. Looks fantastic once you get it right.
@plasmastudio16146 жыл бұрын
Thank You, but I'm giving this Idea. because "Optical Flow" is just another higher level tool/effect and Motion Blur is just a "Hack" so better we've that option in future. :) for experience just download Davinci Resolve now and test it how smooth your slow-motion videos are!

What is the difference between to to scoping and masking the Actors?
@HitfilmUniversity6 жыл бұрын
Rotoscoping is a generic term for "tracing a person/object." It dates back to when a device called a rotoscope was used to project a film negative so the matte artist could create the shapes. A mask is using drawing tools to define a shape directly on a layer. A matte is using a second layer, or some other external data to define a shape on a first layer. In terms of your question there is no difference. Masking the actors IS rotoscoping. Mocha is generating a matte (even though its applied to the layer with the effect, it's a matte because external software is creating it and passing it to the layer). Now, the difference between using mocha and the masking tools? Mocha can TRACK, which means Mocha can follow movement of an object. Mocha is pretty good at automatically following the way a shape changes as it moves. Mocha can have multiple splines link to a single track. Masking tools do none of that. With masking you basically have to hand-correct every shape on every frame. You not track a mask directly in Hitfilm in any way...

Great tutorial, but unfortunately most (or all?) Hitfilm tutorial lack one important point (imo) The part showing the desired result and the final made one just don't exist. A different way might be: 1. Show the "effect" in full length 2. Do the tutorial 3. Show the result of the tutorial made effect in full length A great AE tutorial YT does this really good ;) The videos start end especially end way to quick. INDEED, lol, i just find my selfe making a lot of mistakes when doing roto work...
@HitfilmUniversity6 жыл бұрын
Both FxHome and Triune Films are businesses and that adds some other considerations here. Adding a greenscreen requires having a greenscreen large enough to cover what's needed. Possibly multiple sizes. The greenscreen needs to be lit, so that's lights, stands, batteries and sandbags. Now, besides Tim and Emily you have your DP, audio, and props/makeup (probably Ryan and Josh, maybe Arris). Now... Do you add more people to your crew to mess around with the lights and greenscreen? Or, do the crew double up hats. Either way you more than double the time taken on this shoot, and that's a generous estimate... What about the wide shot? So you have to drag the greenscreen out, shoot the actor plate, then strike it, drag it back behind the camera.... Now we discuss "person-hours." We know there were at least five people on the shoot. From the BTS it looks more like seven or eight. So, an additional hour of shoot "costs" the same as Javert rotoing for a day. Again, Triune is a business--they make money off video work and sponsors. No matter how you figure it, this short has a budget--either FXHOME contracted them, or no money was paid. Even if Triune wasn't paid by FXHOME, there's a budget--Triune isn't doing paid work when doing a possible "freebie." For FXHOME. Triune's landlord doesn't care how cool Hitfilm is, rent is due. So, once again, even though it probably takes Javert longer to roto than key, in terms of "person hours," it takes a lot less time (money) for Javert to roto than it does for the production crew to mess around with greenscreen.
