Pn oice Wrong. What the retired plague doctor sniffed and ate was most likely lavender or some other herb, because back then it was widely believed that the plague came from bad smells. They wore the beaked masks because they put said spices into them so they would breathe in good smells, which made them feel like they couldn't get the plague. Their clothes were also covered in wax because it was believed that the plague would stick to rough surfaces.

To anyone who’s wondering: the reason the mask is so long was that it would be filled with different spices that would sent and “filter” the air that would go through the mask, so that the doctor wouldn’t be infected. The cane was also used to that the doctor didn’t have to touch the patient Edit: herbs, not spices. Thanks frillmaster9000

I'd just like to point out a few inaccuracies: Yes, the plague doctors were hired during the black death, mid 14th century, hOWever, the iconic beak mask and costume was only invented by Charles de l'Orme, who lived in the late 16th century. He invented the costume for himself and used it first in 1619. Furthermore, the mask would have been made of leather, and it was only 6 inches long, it did not look that ridiculously huge. That is all, carry on.

Fellinux That is incorrect. The beak wasn't intended to be alongside with the costume. It played a big part with helping the Plague Docters. As they thought anyways. The beak never met to be a beak. It was used for Herbs, Flowers, and other greens to keep them healthy while inside the costume. And if you haven't known. Their costume was waxed so that no "Rotten Air" was inside their coat.

So therefore, you may have heard about people saying it was intended to be. But I am not saying that you do not agree with me, but I do suggest looking up why Plague Docters have beaks. Also, if you watch this clip once more, the main characters says he "wants to help people." In my opinion I don't think he would wear the beak if he wanted to help. Also, look at the clip once again. The point when the Plague Docter was infected with the disease he ran to his bathroom opened his mask up and received Herbs within his mask. Indicating he has Herbs in his beak. And rounded was also made like that. But it depends on the creator. The creator of the mask is using a different material then what other people use to create masks. I beleave this is the reason. It's so sad because that was what it was like back then. A plague doctor would try to heal someone and have to quarantine themselves for a certain amount of time before going back out to try cure someone else. Until one gets the disease as well and is visited by another plague doctor who must cure them instead. It sort of goes around in a circle. It teaches a good lesson about the plague and plague doctors and how they are misunderstood as ringers I death. Yes, they sort of are because if they are unable to heal someone, they put them out of their misery and try to stop the disease spreading. It is also because they were present during the black death, wore black symbolizing death and even wore raven-like masks in which ravens are symbolized with death too. A beautiful, educational yet tragic film. Well done guys!!
