I have the Granada brakes on my two 68 Mustangs. In order to use my factory 14” wheels I had a machine shop to turn down the outer diameter of the hub so the wheel would slide over it. That was 15 years ago and they have worked fine.

does that include granada spindles? ... and does the granada wheel bearings only work for that?

Back in the early 90’s I used 78 Granada spindles and brakes on my 64 Ranchero. Still driving it and the set up works great. Only hiccup was the tie rods, but the parts guy at Napa worked with me to find the right parts. We went through a lot of boxes and finally found what we needed to work with my power steering.

@@AutoRestoMod I have no bump steer problems. Only problem is a sloppy steering box. Back in the early 90’s when I was building the car I only found one company that sold new boxes, but they were out of stock and didn’t know when they would have them. I think they were made in South America. Also back then Granada conversations was the one car magazines talked about except for the companies that made disc brake conversion kits. Also the Granada spindles were free and I also just finished restoring a 66 Mustang and money was a concern. If you haven’t done a video on steering box adjustments I would really like to see one for Fords.

@@meanbird4979 Unfortunately I did the swap back in the early 90’s so it’s hard to recall. Originally my Ranchero Delux had manual steering. A friend gave me a complete power steering assembly. The tie rod assemblies fit perfectly, but we’re totally worn. When I tried to replace them by what was listed in the catalogs at Napa they weren’t even close. The parts guy started opening boxes and finally matched them to the worn out rod ends. Still driving the Ranchero and I have never an alignment since the original alignment. Everything has held up over 36k miles except for an idler arm that had a bushing fail last year.

the reason for cross drilled rotors is not for weight. its to allow the gasses that form between the pad and the rotors to escape, otherwise you get brake fade.

Cross drilling and angle grooving is to disperse the vaporizing pad material. The vapor causes the pad to float on the vapor reducing the stopping effectiveness. Kinda like an air hockey table.

@stevec1746
@stevec1746 25 күн бұрын
Are you sure about the -3 degrees of caster on Granada spindles? This is the first time I've heard of it. I put Granada spindles on my 1970 Cougar and all attaching points seemed to be identical to the 1970 spindle. The alignment specs for 1975-1980 Granada calls for -1.25 to +.25 degrees castor. I would think this would closer to -3 degrees if caster was built into the spindle. Certainly no positive caster. The alignment specs for a 1970 Mustang call for -1 to +1 degrees. Earlier models call for a bit less but still centered around 0 degrees. It seems odd that spindles would have -3 degrees built in and then have over half that or all taken away. So on Mustang forum I saw this; "According to Dennis from CSRP the difference in offset between the Granada and 65/65 is .500". The distance between the center lines between the lower ball joint and tie rod is about 6". Here's where it gets interesting. .500"/6.00" = .0833, since the opposite over adjacent sides equal the sine of an angle, the sine of 5° = .0871. With 5° caster on a 67-73 spindle on a 65-66 car, bump steer should theoretically be the same as a 65-66 car set at 0° caster. So adding any amount of caster is your friend as to what bartl said. When I measured my 66 spindles I think I measured 6.25" which would change the caster to 3.5°." So the caster change happens on 65-66 cars by dumb luck.

I had heard from some reliable sources that the Granada spindles were different in their angle than the Torino spindles. They also are under a different part number. That is not to say that my information is completely correct. All you really trying to get is to a -3° Caster setting

I have Granada spindles/brakes on a 1960 Comet 2dr wagon and a '65 Ranchero. Both have been on the cars for 14 and 19 years. Both cars have V8 suspension and '65 Falcon V8 steering. The '65 V8 steering setup should be considered mandatory when putting this setup on a '60-'65 Falcon/Comet. Earlier V8 or six cyl steering leads to dangerous bump steer problems, the '65 setup has compatible geometry that works with the Granada setup. Both cars handle well and have no bump steer.

@@meanbird4979 My Ranchero has the '65 power steering setup, so for the right outer tie rod, I used stock Granada to interface correctly with the spindle. For the left outer tie rod, that's a different story. Ford used a larger thread size on the inner and outer tie rods and sleeve on the driver side only, so a special conversion tie rod manufactured by Rare Parts was used which has the large thread size and the correct taper for the Granada spindle. If you have manual steering, just use Granada tie rod ends on both sides.

@@AutoRestoMod I used to build AC Cobras for a living. I did my own mods on the car. You will like this one. I took a four speed bell housing, drilled out the fulcrum two rivets. Than made a template for the four mounting hole for the transmission and the fulcrum holes. Bolted the template to the T5 bell housing, took the pivot fulcrum off for the cable, drilled the two 1965 fulcrum holes. The difference in a 3/4 spd toploader and Tremec 5spd input shaft is 5/8th of an inch. So I put a 5/8th inch solid aluminium spacer to move the 1965 fulcrum foward on the T 5 bell housing, bolting with grade 8 and metal locking nuts. I installed the 1965 clutch piviot arm with 1965 throwout bearing and 1965 soild input shaft bushing. Now all the original clutch linkage works Z-bar and all. No cables, no hydralics to route or keep away fron the exhaust. And only a discerning eye can see the Tremec. Aluminium driveshaft, Shelby drop with upper arms kicked back, 1968 biig block springs with 1/3rd coil cut, one inch front and 11/16th rear sway bar from Stambar, extra half leaf, 3:55 posey eight inch. I also have a Reed Cam, took a little piston eyebrow adjustment for clearance with the Edlebrock heads. Later model timing cover so I can replace the front seal. Another trick, I cut a lifter push rod, tapped the inside and made it adjustable with a stud. Used it to keep my roller rockers perfectly centered, than ordered the exact length. All this 30 years ago and have never touched it. The upper control arms are almost hard mounted to the frame, hardly any shims. And everything was powder coated.

@xaenon

For the most part, 75-80 Granada and Monarch use the same spindles and brakes, with only the Lincoln Versailles spindles being different. HOWEVER, .... Be aware that Ford did offer the Granada and Monarch with a 351W V8 in '75 and '76 (possibly '77 as well). If you have the Windsor-equipped model, or a model that was delivered with the police/heavy duty package (yes, it was an option!), you'll likely find the Versailles spindles. Finding one with the Versailles spindles is a fairly rare event, though. Seriously, if you DO find a set of those in a yard, buy the whole car if you can, and make sure you buy some lottery tickets on the way home....

The 78 Granada(etc) brass combination valve works great for all disc/drum cars. If you find a 4 disc car, G/V, grab that valve for 4 disc. They worked great from the factory. Better than manual valves. IMO.

Thanks for the great information. I have the Granada setup on my 66 fairlane and I'm using the 14 inch magnum 500 wheels. My tires rub the upper control arm. What size wheel spacer should I use to make this clear? Thanks for your help.
@AutoRestoMod
@AutoRestoMod 4 жыл бұрын
Not a fan of spacers. Youcan upgrade to a 15 inch wheel and tire and stop the rub problems. I have read that the 3/8-inch spacer will give you the room, but as I said, not a big fan.

Mine only rub the sidewall in full droop. 215/70 tires. M500 wheels. No need to change. I did try 5/16 spacers and then the tire rubbed the fender lip during bump going up a driveway. Rather then roll the lip, I just removed the spacers.

Did you knew the same exact brakes were made in England by Girling in Liverpool and were the exact brakes also supplied to Rolls Royce In the early 1960's, in fact the Ford parts that were rejected ended up on Rolls Royce corniches from 1963 on

Shims... You can install Versailles ball joints I use Granada tie rod ends inner and outer and just ream the tapers with tool from SPEEDWAY. Measure your bump steer and adjust the tie rod end position using heim joint to minimize bs between -2 and +3 inches travel. Simple.

Sorry. No numbers. Did this several times 15-25 yrs ago. My daily driver 63 Fairlane has Granada brakes/tie rods, ball bearing idler arm, etc. Granada brakes work well with top grade linings for street work. You are still limited by traction. Google "Fox Mustang bump steer kits" and you can see pictures of the bump steer correction idea for the outer tie rod end. (Home assembled kits are much less expensive.) Doing simple bump steer measuring allows a quick set up. Hope this helps. 😎

Ill mention again that if you use a Ford coil spring compresser that sucks the spring up into the tower, front end work is faster and safer. Bump steer can be checked by only removing the shocks.

@@AutoRestoMod I snagged some 72 Torino disc spindles for my Galaxie. They have an awkward caliper mounting setup like the Granada. I made some brackets to mount 2001 crownvic /or cobra calipers and rotors and converted the Torino rotor-hub into just a hub. Going the aftermarket route on the drum spindles is much less work.

My personal cars. 👍 62-65 bolt right on. Use Granada tie rod ends. Ream the tapers with a tool from Speedway. When lowered 1.5 inches bump steer is very good. Keep your lower pivot points horizontal parallel with the ground👍 Make everything G parts for easy replacement.
