Regarding Scandinavian kings having a Lion for a Fylgja, another point to remember is that Lions once had a much wider range than today and it included much of Europe. It wasn't until the 10th century that the Lion disappeared from Europe altogether. Worth considering

@@joesdfasd9016 All true but they died out with the Pleistocene extinction. European Lions were around during recorded history they were found as far north as southern france, as far west as spain, throughout the Mediterranean and right through the Caucasus in to southern Russia. Sadly, the Roman empire was not kind to them and they were steadily wiped out throughout most of their range. The last population was in the Caucasus which died out in the 10th century AD. All of this is to say that Lions were not entirely exotic to the Norse.

There are extinct species of lion that had much wider ranges throughout Europe, Asia, and the Americas during the pleistocene. Many animals we now ascribe certain ranges to were much more widespread, and it wasn't until the extinction event of the YDIH a lot of evidence points to that the larger species went extinct and the smaller ones gradually lost habitat as human range expanded.

Pretty sure my great aunt became a Fylgja when she passed away. I was maybe 9 years old ( she looked after my cousin and I most of the time whilst my parents worked). I dreamt she was getting on a train and had her bags packed . She urgently told my cousin and I in the dream that she had to leave on the train but she would look over us and we could ask her for help or talk to us any time. She said she would be able to hear us and help if she could but that she would not be able to answer. In the morning I woke up and my cousin had the same dream. My aunt passed away after emergency surgery during the night. I have also had my grandmother teach me things about gardening in my dreams and various other bizarre dream experiences. When I have traced our family ancestry that side of the family originated in Denmark on an Island that they found a Mjolnir( sorry Im Australian so not sure of correct spelling). Id love to visit that part of the world and feel into those ancestral roots.

Very interesting. I had a very similar dream about my grandmother who just passed away on, about to leave on a train telling me similar things. I've named my daughter after her. My grandmother loved cats and I've always had dogs. I went with my baby daughter on a trip for the weekend in the hills without houses nearby. While walking in the forests a sick stray kitten came to us and followed us, now living with us and she and my daughter are crazy about each other.

for the Ojibway (one of the North American Native peoples), we did not have "Spirit animals" per se. We had clans and spirits that watched over us but the "spirit animal" is a non-Indigenous bastardization. Thanks for this, very informative

Curious if, because the popularized idea of “Native North American Spirit Animals” was not a part of the Ojibway culture, if that means that it is in no way accurate to *any* of the other tribes? There are huge differences in culture, beliefs, and traditions even in the geographically local tribes here on the West Coast of Canada… I do wonder where the popularized version of “spirit animals” (in regards to Indigenous North American Culture) we see so much of in the entertainment industry came from? It is always interesting to see the differences and similarities between different tribal cultures. The Pop culture “spirit animal/totem” representation of North American Indigenous People is almost as accurate as the portrayal of Viking culture, or witchcraft.

Years ago, I had a very vivid dream that I saw as kind of a vision about a raven preening me. I thought it was trying to attack me, but I realized that I had bugs all over me and it was getting them off. The day after, I saw a ton of ravens in random places. Ever since then, I notice that ravens and crows tend to watch me wherever I am. That's what lead me to believe that a raven is my spirit animal.

I just did the knife wrapped in a handkerchief method and the ritual worked! At first, it wouldn't fall off because I wrapped it so well. Then I wrapped it again, and this time I only held onto the handle, not the handkerchief. Eventually, the handkerchief unwound with each rotation and fell to the floor very auspiciously.

I had a weird dream during Yule before last, where I was talking to a friend and he said something about our souls being divided into different beings. I looked down and there was a raven perched on my arm and the rest of the dream consisted of her flying around and coming back to land on my arm. I've taken that to be my fylgja. Whereas previously I'd been in the "my spirit animal is a wolf bro" group, a raven actually makes more sense for me.

I'm not sure most Fylgja would want to be named publicly. You might be permitted to share with a very close friend or family member, but I wouldn't necessarily do even that. I'm fairly certain about my animal fylgja. The human-shape one, I'm less certain of, though I have a "suspicion".

My "fylgja" is a roe deer. I live in a village and through my childhood and adulthood had countless positive encounters with them. They seem to be drawn to me. There are at least 3 sleeping and eating on the grass right in front of my window. Many times stumbled upon a deer, it watched me for a moment then just walked off calmly.

Im kind of wondering if the reason the wolf was considered a negative fylgja because of the cultural interpretation that wolves were dangerous and more like exiles like the lone wolf who would be the most dangerous of all due to being forced to fend for itself. I speculate at that time, wolves would be humans top competitor for food as bears dont always get close to human heavily populated areas very often. Wolves tend to attack flocks of farm animals when their own food sources are dwindling and considering plenty of vikings were farmers, it makes sense they would dislike signs of wolves being around. In germany, they wiped out wolves entirely by the 1800s and so I imagine germanic tribes relocating to sweden in the early ages might have had the same mentality of wolves being a negative connotation to include the biggest one of all, Fenrir, one of the beasts that will play a role in Ragnorak. But then you have the wolves of Odin that seem OK to be just fine since they are controllable, but then again, unlike dogs, wolves werent controllable to men. And then we have stories of people turning into wolves when wearing pelts and possibly in connection to werewolves. It just seems that the negative associations is what makes them see the fylgja as a wolf, so I wonder if the person whose fylgia they saw as a wolf may see theirs as a different animal? Am I making any sense? lol.

Thank you for the interesting video. My Fylgja (Jadelin, human, female) has over time taken on more and more tasks in the private, shamanic and professional context. She is a companion and advisor. She explains contexts to me with few words, sometimes a little flippantly, so that I often become aware of the actual context only later. During an Influenza, which I just got over, I spent whole nights in fever delirium with her. The insights she gave me were very helpful. In the shamanic work she has replaced animal entities that served me as spirit helpers. She guides me through the worlds, leads me to places that are important for insights. In the professional context as a child and youth therapist she has claimed a home (a branch with a knothole) where she can stay while I conduct the conversations. She is thus a permanent companion in my life.

I used to have alot of Vardøgers when I was younger, it was mostly my mom. It happend like this. I could sit in the livingroom watching TV or whatever, while I was sitting there I could hear my mom come home and you heard all the sounds, door opening, her breathing, and then nothing more... 15-20 minutes or so later she would come home, you heard the exactly same sounds ... door opening, breathing, taking off the shoes and so on ... My mom who now is not alive, used to tell me that she used to hear my Vardøger too just the same way. Strange thing is ... I don't hear others vardøgere as far as I can tell, I used to hear hers... not any longer ofcourse. And it have followed that path of family I think, because her mother, my grandmother used to make dinners after her husbands vardøger, once she heard him coming home she put the potatoes on and when my granddad came home they where done. He was at sea fishing.

this reminds me of my great grandma. she loved owls and had mixed celtic/germanic and cherokee ancestry. there have only been a two times that i have seen a pure white owl in the wild and both of them were the day before a relative i was very close with passed away. i feel like it was her way of helping me somehow. her alzheimer’s had progressed to the point where i dont remember times where i could actually talk to her with her being fully aware but i was always told that she loved me almost more than any other family member and i was the only person whose name she never forgot.

I do not care, if its done with respect why not ... there are no or should not be any requirements of skincolor to get into norse mythology or beliefs. Personally I'm still registrated at the norwegian church, but I do not call myself christian even that I am baptised and confirmed ... it was done as traditions was back then. Do I believe in Åsatro ? no ... I can't say that, I do believe there is more at heaven and earth than I can explain. I have experienced Vardøger (he explained it in this video), I have experienced Deja Vu ... but sadly I hardly ever remember those episodes before I am in the situation... its then I can say, wait a minute, I have experienced this before !!!!. I believe in ghosts even that I can't claim to have seen any, I do believe that you should not provoke ghosts so I don't do Quija-boards as several of my friends used to do when we where younger. I say .. go and explore norse mythology and beliefs, if you find it suitable for you .. good I would say.

I find the wolf fylghe being a negative thing interesting. Currently, in Shipibo shamanic traditions, which is an ayahuasca tradition in Peru, the wolf spirit is similarly viewed as not the greatest - contrary to what most people getting into shamanism think. Thanks for sharing!

I’d say rooted in shared experience. Wolves are direct competition for humans, and dangerous to humans. It’s more common sense than magical. Hunter gatherers and early farmers generally share a fear and hatred of wolves. Wolves are to much like us to be acceptable.

Reindeer. My mom and I both were in a dead sleep when we sensed a reindeer spirit enter into the home. I was aware of the reindeer approaching me and witnessed in my spirit that it came to me. So strong was the experience as it occured that I opened my eyes to waken from the dream, and with my physical eyes, I saw that beautiful reindeer spirit still before me only to quickly "dissolve", vanishing before my sight. I have not had an experience like it before or since. It was not until later that morning that my mom shared with me that she sensed the reindeer enter the home and come to me as we both slept in separate rooms. I have not been able to determine the meaning of this experience since its occurence some 3 years ago. The reindeer seemed so very real and alive. I will never forget it. So far, I remain mystified by my experience and have not found any answers for what this means. Your video brought it all back for me. Does anyone have any thoughts as to reindeer and their role or meaning?

Not sure about the nords, but to the Sámi, the indigenous peoples of Scandinavia, the reindeer is regarded as one of the most sacred animals, aside from perhaps the bear. I believe it was once thought that the strongest animal guide a noaidi or shaman could have was a bull reindeer. They typically represent life. I'd say to have a reindeer as a spirit animal must mean you are an empathic spirit, probably naturally gifted in seeing things most others don't. Your reindeer friend should be treasured. ❤

When I was around 11 to 13 I used to have this reoccurring dream where I would watch a native American Indian warrior charge at a large grizzly bear in a forest clearing with a hand axe. It was always the same, but would look different like the season in the forest, or the bears fur would be different, or the native American would wear different clothing, sometimes looking completely different.

For many years I felt like mine was a wolf. That was the only animal that ever really "talked" to me or came to mind (occasionally I would feel the owl). Then last year, I had this very vivid dream where it appeared my fylgja was a tiger. He was very drawn to me and followed me around, but also very cautious of me and wouldn't allow me closer than arms reach. He seemed familiar to me and I familiar to him, but again, somewhat cautious and attempting to feel me out (since, I suppose, this was our first meeting).

👋since childhood I have always felt a special connection and guidance protection with crows. I don't know why but I do. I always seem to have a group of crows around me no matter where I live or stay, such as camping. There's always crows around me.

I was just contemplating about this topic, just as I noticed this new video was so coincidentally uploaded. I do occasionally have dreams about friends where they manifest as represented by an animal entity, usually some neon-colored fox or sparkledog actually.. Also here is that interesting saga excerpt about the götish king Hrólf Götriksson's fylgja: *In old norse:* "þar sem sá varga, þad eru manna fylgior; enþar sem hid *oarga dyr* for fyri þeim, er Kongs fylgia, oc mun han vera formadr þeirra, þar rann i hia honum hvijta biorn eirn, þar mun þessum Kongi filgia nockr kappi, eda Kongsson," *In boomer swedish:* "wargarna som iag såg, thet är mans hamn och betydelse; men thet *stora willdiuret* , som lop för them thet är Kongs fölgia och wårde, och mon han wara theras förmann, then hwijta biörnen som lop hos honom, betyder nogon kempe eller Kongs son," It is interesting also to how they commonly use those circumscriptive words to say *lion* .

I’m pretty sure that my fylgja is a spider. One night a few years ago when I was about 17 I was walking down an isolated street near my house wearing headphones, blaring hip hop music so I couldn’t hear a thing. I glanced to my right and I noticed a big spider crawling on the pavement between to parked cars. Having a lifelong passion for nature, I walk over and crouch down to observe it and right as I did a big truck comes barreling down the road right over the spot that I was standing when I noticed the spider. On top of that three seconds later a police cruiser comes speeding by after the truck. I’ve also been practicing lucid dreaming since I was 12 and have gained the ability to jump unnaturally high and walk on walls in my dreams.

ive had reoccuring dreams my whole life of being persued by pure white wolves either in the basement of mothers house in a big hole in the floor or they would appear in the woods. i would be in an open field in the bright sun and as i approached the forest the sun would go down and then the wolves would persue me. They've never gotten close to me. I finally got to the part of the video about wolves and yeah its true most people dont like me.

When I was a child my grandfather played an important role in my life, and he always said that one needs an animal to run with ( and named the wolf for me, and giving me the second name Ulf) and a bird to let my soul fly with, and he named the raven (Hrafn). He used the Swedish word “följeslagare” for them, a word which I think share etymology with Fylgia. He was born in a very christian family (his father was actually priest) so he never mentioned any norse mythology background to this practise, but I wonder. But I came to think about this, and of course I am of the impression that I meet ravens more often than I statistically should… but it might of course be wishful thinking. … just a little story of mine.

I asked what shape my Fylgja might take inside my head out walking last week here in Dalarna, seconds later a whooper swan flew right over my head and those are very rare here. Im a man btw since swans usually are prescribed women.

Really strange but interesting. I have had quite a few years where this white cobra would just show up in my dreams to warn me. It got to the point where I understood that if I saw it, some change was heading my way. Usually before a falling out with someone. But it is also protective of me and a time or two entered the dreams of someone else to give them a good tongue lashing about how they were treating me. And at that time I hadn't told them about any of it, and I didn't personally send it after them either. I just remember being so distraught over how I was being treated. To one, it told them to "be serious" and stop their playing with my emotions. They took the discussion to heart and cleaned up their act. The other did not and is out of my life. I did have an acquaintance who said he could see the animal to a certain extent and he believed they were connected to personality. He said I'd never mix well in the company of anyone else with a snake (given mine is a king cobra...which eats other and even venomous snakes), I'm quick to read people, while occasionally venenous in my words I know when to be and when not to be. After that, the more I dove into the behavior of the animal, it really seemed to fit. I guess if it accepts me, I will accept it. It's interesting to have this video and read the comments of others. I don't feel so odd now.

about the whole hearing people show up before they actually do, my father and my sister both would make enormous amounts of noise when they entered the house (stomping feet to clear off the snow opening the door a certain way etc) and i would always hear them 5 minutes before they actually showed up- and so would the dog, he would snap to attention and go wait by the door and sure enough 5 minutes later there they were in the flesh, made the same noise again and actually entered the house this time, happened every single time!

Hedgehog. There have been different ones over the years, most of my childhood it was a bear and a cow, then it was lynx. But for most of my grownup years it's been hedgehogs.

My Fylgja is the wolf and the hawk. I moved to the top of a mountain and a crow came to communicate with me. He would let me know whenever someone was near. He had one wing feather missing so I could always tell him apart from the rest of his flock.

There is nothing weird about the norse knowing of lions. The African lion is not the only lion in the world. For example, the Puma is more correctly the North American Mountain Lion. There were lions in North Europe, they just didn't look like the African ones, they didn't have those large manes.

It seems that lions used to roam a much much larger area than they do today. In Greece there are old references to men wearing lion skins, as well. It is thought that lions were actually throughout Eurasia and another type of bull creature that was much larger than ones today and is now extinct.

❤This channel is always interesting. I'm curious though (after seeing Hrólf saga Gautreksson), if you can delve into the spreading of Germanic given names into Europe? My surname, Gauthier, was used as a given name for a long time in Frankish history and with Swedish names like Gauti, Gautr, Gautrek, Algaut and others, it would be fun to see you trace such names southward through the remainder of Europe, and the inevitable linguistic mutations (like Guttierez) that came from that history

I have always had dreams of a "White Lady" - I can never see her face though, just a glowing white light in noble regalia and blonde or red hair. Also Lions were found in Europe recently enough.
