Hell yeah. These chains get loose fast, just did mine cuz it slapped when I cut throttle, brand new bike 85 miles on it. I put it to 2 and less than a 10th in change, torqued it to 76, cuz manual said so. I noticed before I tightened it, the chain could reach the bottom of the swingarm and make contact. Now it doesn't

Good point on the torque stuff. And shops that do not do it, including dealerships, no longer get my business. I have had to destroy dealer mounted oil filters, and the first time they adjusted my chain it was WAY too tight and the rear tire was out of line to boot. If you over torque that axle nut it will not only stress your bearings, but it will destroy the axle nut which is a compound nut. If you do that, have fun getting it off. Do your own work, do it right, have fun, be safe. Also, personally I found that the notches were not the best way to measure alignment. I measure the distance from the back of the swingarm to the end of the adjusting nut bolt. It allows for a much closer measurement (overkill really) and the notches and the pointer method have some slop, the bolts and swingarm do not. Databyter

Where do you change the transmission oil ? Also do you measure from the bottom on the chain guard to top middle or bottom of the chain links
@tompeter73265 жыл бұрын
You did much better than the other guy who´s video I saw. But keep in mind that chains are often differently streched out. So first on the bike stand find out the tightest section of the chain slack and take this for adjustment. And by tightening the axle nut you often get another tension as well in the chain, ...so again :)

It's pittsburgh tools for me, haha. So, I just tightened up my chain on my '18 for the first time. This is after the dealer I bought it from supposedly had done so. I took the bike in for a recall on the two bolts which hold on the flimsy as hell chain guard and they said they would tighten up the chain for me. I'm not sure they did much of anything except put my rear end out of alignment. The chain guard still seems to have play in it, too. Needless to say I don't really trust my dealer to do maintenance on my bike now...

I've heard a lot of people here complaining about the Yamaha dealers not being competent, and unfortunately had to deal with it myself a time or two. I can't do everything and don't expect other people to, but it does give you a certain level of satisfaction after you go through and do routine stuff like this. Especially since the buy-in is really cheap, a simple stand and some basic tool kit will get you doing 80% of the work you need on this thing. Ride safe homie!

Great videos, really enjoy them. But there is no need to increase the torque value for the adapter as it does not store or waste torque so the extra few foot pounds do go into the threaded Assembley, it would only be an issue if you were using it at an angle which changed the effective length of the wrench. T=Force x Distance.
@HiVizSmiley6 жыл бұрын
Interesting! I've only heard two "tales" I guess you'd call them over my career. The whole one socket and no extensions/adapters rule was a college thing I think, and I've also heard to never use an impact socket because of the softness taking some torque away, always a quality chrome one. I need to see if I can find some kind of research on all of it and nerd out for a little while. Thanks for the comment and compliment my friend!

Thanks for the video and there’s definitely nothing wrong with being precise. I always use a torque wrench for this as well. I must really look goofy when I get out the digital calipers to measure the chain slack to the 1/100th mm hahaha.

Does the hole in the rear axle go completely through? Then grab a metal rod the size it fits in the hole and stick it through with both ends poking out and you can use it as lifting points.

Really appreciate your video. There is one thing that i didn‘t understand and i‘ve seen it someone else doing it the same way as you did. The manual says 2in - 2.2 in... which would be like 5.1 to 5.6 cm slack in which the chain should be while pulling down on it.. now I am severely confused by it because you just pulled down to 2.5cm and even tighten it more. I can see that your chain isn‘t tightened enough but is the manual not really really wrong here?

Nice bike! I have the same one & am wondering how you keep your wheels so clean!? Tools, sprays or wax etc?
@HiVizSmiley7 жыл бұрын
Dawit Justice The only thing I do is wash it pretty regular. I just use a professional-grade wash and wax from Showcar. I bought a tool that is kind of cumbersome but if the wheels are really dirty it will cut down on your scrubbing time. I'll link it here if I can.
@dawitjustice7 жыл бұрын
Yea, regular cleaning does make it easier.. I try once a week, maybe 2 weeks.. When it gets to be longer than that i use wddo to get most of the dirt off then use motul clean n wax to clean em. But i have a hard time getting in between.

Nice vid! Following torque spec is not a stupid thing when it comes to vital bolts and nuts like the axel nut, brake disk bolts etc. Motorcycles vibrate all over the frequency spectrum and it is a reason why it is listed. Awsome dialect btw, John B McLemore's son?
@adampreston61355 жыл бұрын
Great video. I just tightened the chain and checked it and I think I may have over tightened it. How hard do you pull down when measuring the distance from chain guide to chain center? If I pull it down as far as I can it's at 2 in but if I just push down on it casually it's a lot less than 2 in.
@HiVizSmiley5 жыл бұрын
I kinda look at it as I barely take up the slack and then I pull it hard and sort of go in the middle of the two. Probably bad advice but whatever. I err on the side of loose since I'm a fat boy

It's a snap-on, a bad habit from my Ford technician days. You pay five times the price for twice the tool. It's the best you can buy in most cases IMO, but it's high!

I also got the amazon version. It's the only time I have ever needed this size. I'll buy it 3 times for the 10 times I'll have to use it and still come out on top. Not like I'm throwing it in an impact gun and 76 ft/lbs isn't exactly high torque.

Dude You measure the distance wrong. You are supposed to measure from the chain guide to the chain centre, not from the swingarm. The manual You are holding says exactly how to do this. So your measurement is at least 5mm off.

tightening/cleaning/lubing the goddamn chain is the most annoying thing ever. No matter if you clean your chain until it shines, half an hour after you leave the garage it is filthy again. Why don't motorcycle makers rely more on drive belts? (i.e. BMW f800st) no cleaning, no maintenance, you forget about the thing until you have to change it...
@HiVizSmiley6 жыл бұрын
Preach! I'm so terrible about doing it, an the FZ's chain is actually really noisy all the time, gets on my nerves. Motorcyclist Magazine did a wonderful video on the pros/cons of all motorcycle final drives, def worth a watch
