From the documentaries I’ve seen… The crew of the enterprise did comment heavily about how much luck played a role that day. Many were shocked that they never got hit. These were very honorable man, they did not exaggerate their tails… They were happy to make it out alive. I also appreciated how they didn’t bash the Japanese on this… They actually portrayed them in a rather positive light except for the one commander who is quite arrogant but I think the actor played the role quite good. Arrogance is a high trait in Japanese culture

@Stesilaus They didn't necessarily sacrifices themselves. The Japanese went after the first sight of American planes and go after it. What I did know was that what the Americans would do is they would launch the attack groups at the same time, so the Japanese would only focus on one group instead of attacking the other. Keep in mind that the torpedo bombers reached their targets first before the dive bombers which explained it.

@vlad78th
@vlad78th 4 жыл бұрын
@Stesilaus Read the book "shattered sword" from parshall and tully to have an almost definite answer about this. The torpedo planes did not really lure the cap (at least not the first 2 squadrons), they prevented the whole japanese fleet from emptying their decks and launching their attack which would have surely sent yorktown and maybe another ship to the bottom in the morning, moreover, the combined attack of yorktown and enterprise planes (which is not explained not told in the movie) did saturate the cap by presenting a simultaneous attack coming from different directions to an overburdened japanese air patrol which wasn't coordinated by radio nor had any radars to give some advance warnings. If the torpedo squadrons which sacrificed themselves had not showed up, the 10h20 morning attack may not have destroyed 3 carriers but merely damage them (even if heavily) or just put them out of the battle like the Shokaky at the battle of the coral sea. And of course the odds of 3 to 1 which the japanese faced in the afternoon would not have happened. The US navy had both a strategic advantage, more planes and luck on their side, but the japanese complacency before the battle also ensured they could not go out of that battle unscathed.

If anyone was wondering or doesn't know why the Dauntless' were flying so close together during the dive, it was due to miscommunications between squadron, as one group was to hit either the Kaga or Akagi, and another were to go for a different carrier, but instead they all went for the same target and ended up in that tight dive formation and nearly flew into each other.

is it just me, or if you watch the second bombinb scene over a few dozen times, you just get the feeling the directors wanted to create the effect of a samurai warrior making a dedicated strike against an opponent. Full focus, full direction onto the target, but at the same time keeping his wits and courage with him, because he intends to strike not just crash into the deck, the warrior seeks ultimate victory with a perfect attack.

LT Best was credited with the first hit on the Hiryu and the sinking of the Kaga. He is the only pilot that received credited for hitting both carriers that day that the Enterprise attacked. McCluksky was in surgery for the second one getting his shoulder repaired. Also the scene were they threw the gunner and pilot overboard attached to the anchor actually happened. It was confirmed after the war by reading the after action report of the ship involved were they stated recovered American dive bomber crew in occurrence with standing fleet orders crew was executed by standard means.

F-ZERO ZERO I was referring to the action sequences. Compared to the stuff you see in Michael Bay’s films or the BF V trailers where you see people just rushing into bullet storms and explosions for no other purpose than to create a sense of intensity this one was refreshing because it felt more normal and realistic. This scene is a good example you see the dive bombers begin their dive and the AAA coming at them but you don’t see them making wild and crazy and unrealistic maneuvers, to me it felt so realistic that It actually reminded me of the WW2 documentaries I used to watch in the History Channel when I was a child.

Its exagerated on how low the planes drop the bombs. The role of the dive bomber was to fly as high as possible and use the air brakes to precisely drop the bombs from an high altitude (1500 meteres to 3500 meteres) to avoid being destroyed by flaks or airplanes. Hell the planes in this scene were not even affected by air drag, you can pull up your airplane but depending on your speed it will take a few secs(its a lot when flying a plane) just for your plane to reorientate, and the heavier the mass the worst it gets.
@muserock2367
@muserock2367 3 жыл бұрын
@@sergeeduardodegernier5195 not to mention the fact that the light AA rounds seem to be exploding at increasingly lower altitudes as the planes dive. That wouldn't happen as they had to be set to explode at a certain altitude before firing. It would be impossible to tailor the detonation time to the height of a rapidly diving aircraft.
@DieyoungDiefast

Ian W. Toll's Pacific War series really goes into detail as to how friggin difficult it was for dive bombers. I feel like this movie really does justice to the immense skill and bravery that these men demonstrated, flying into walls of shrapnel. The one thing I wish the movie did was to use multicolored bursts for the flak, which is what the Japanese did historically. Different colors were used for different altitudes so as to help with their aim.

They would have kept kicking our butts for another 6-12 months....until production of all the superior equipment and training caught up with them. Would have been ugly....I think they would easily have overrun Midway and then attacked Hawaii...forcing the 3 American carriers into battle there and then their experience would prob have sunk our fleet All those experienced pilots would still be alive and that is very scary. No difference in concentration camps… Maybe they were being forced to work and all that shit but it was detainment nonetheless

The scenes with the Japanese were very good, not many movies I've seen showed how much a division there was among the Japanese ranks about the conflict, showing they weren't just mindless soldiers marching off to war without question. While it was disgusting how the U.S. citizens were treated....Don't exaggerate, there is a very big difference between interning them in crappy conditions(while being a full violation of their rights) to a concentration camp that was actively designed to kill those it housed. If there was no difference I doubt units like the Purple Heart Brigade would have even existed. While I have no issue with the current Japanese people, the WWII Japanese is a different story, a lot of them did escape justice for their actions and compared to what happened the the Chinese population and pretty much every area they conquered, Japan's population got off easy and they recieved tremendous amount of support to rebuild...but to be fair, there was plently of U.S. soldiers who admitted they could have been put on war crimes themselves if the war had gone the other way. By that point the mentality was kill or be killed, and unfortunately that's what they had to have to defeat an enemy refusing to surrender.

I loved it... The dive bombing runs were INTENSE on the big screen. Saw it at least 5 times just for that. The script is fast paced and clean. I think the movie would have done a lot better if they done a better job in marketing. When people hear " A True Story " or " Based on a True Story "... many people think it will be boring. It would have been better if they had minimized the True Story aspect and pushed harder on the Action Movie aspect... Then at the end in the credits they could make a big deal about the True Story Aspect. Action movies simply sell better... and being true tops it off. All the actors did a great job. Maybe it won't be at the top of their acting career... but movies like this launch actors into better roles.

Isn’t “arial” a font, like helvetica? Aerial attack is something you do with planes, arial attack sounds incredibly nerdy , something that goes on at a newspaper or publisher... Lucky it didn’t say Ariel attack, couldn’t have watched a mermaid attack the japanese navy. Never mind, English isn’t my first language, so I probably could not spell it either at the first go.

I can't imagine the two main things these brave men did during these horrible wars, from both sides. First off, the trauma they sustained and secondly, the huge balls they had. Imagine being on those planes being surrounded by heavy artillery and praying to God that none of those thousands of bullets not hitting you. And also being on those ships praying to God that none of those bombs hit your ship. Its insane honestly what those men lived through.

One thing I do appreciate about this film is that they represented actual WW2 ships. If you take a look at Micheal Bay's Pearl Harbor, you see modern ships being bombed and aircraft taking off from modern carriers. Multi million dollar budget and he couldn't be bothered to at least CGI in some static WW2 Era ships.

Consider that for every tracer round you see, there's another 4 or 5 rounds coming with it, then consider how very many AA guns were being put to use. These men were flying into almost solid walls of lead and flak.

It doesn’t seem like a good tactic to fly information on attack. Perhaps on the way to target but not during the attack because it gives the defending gutters a more focused area to fire on. Perhaps They need to avoid hitting each other if they attacked from multiple factors but they are certainly making it more easy to shoot into a school of fish basically

That is as close as they can make the actual event look real. No matter how good the effects, the raw fear and determination of both the pilots and the rear gunners of the divebombers and the men operating the anti-aircraft guns and sailors on the ships is something that any of us could only imagine in that moment.
@bad_covfefe

That amount of flak isn't realistic, the actual amount would be less. The amount shown is to carry the sense of fear pilots would actually have.

I researched Midway and watching this movie I learnt new stuff I thought had to bs but they really happened the movie I would say is 95% accurate so only 5 mins, 5 degrees and 5 percent off.. they should endeavour to better next time lol
