The way you describe the sounds of different basses and strings you try, is really great. It’s not easy to describe sound, but you do great

Thanks for watching! These GHS flats are my second favourite, second only to the Thomastik Infelds. I like that they are softer in tension/feel and smoother to the touch compared to other brands. They have a nice round fundamental note. The short scale wound length fits a 30" top load perfectly!

You mentioned swapping out the pickup in the Fallout. What pickup would you put in it to get that more vintage tone? Again, another well thought out video. I have two short scale basses and tried out the G&L and found the ergonomics a little strange.

Thanks for watching! The G&L pickup cavity is slightly larger than a '35' size soapbar - which means you could, in theory, put in any number of '35' sized soapbars if you are willing to put up with a small gap around it. Passive production options include the Duncan SSB and the EMG Hz but both of those are decidedly modern sounding, but probably have less barky mids than the stock G&L. Nordstrand could make a number of their soapboar style pickups in a '35' sized shell. I never did try a different pickup as G&Ls tend to have their own identity, both in terms of looks and tone. They historically tried putting EMGs in their long scale basses (instead of their brand) and I don't think they ever took off. But the G&L tone is baked into their basses. It's an identifiable mid barky, aggressive sounding thing and if you love it, it's awesome. If you want a more laid back tone, it doesn't quite do it, to my ears.

I am a Big Fan of G&L. The Tribute series is great value. whenever I see a Player using one it's an instant conversation starter. I have seen Players up in arms over replacing the Bridge and MFD Pickups and I think it's because they feel it would be taking away the bass identity. I am 85% sure The Bridges and MFD Pickups on the Tribute line are the same ones G&L use on the Fullerton line. I watched Ryan from 60CycleHum take apart a G&L Comanche Tribute and Fullerton a couple months ago and the pickups and bridges looked really similar even the voltage readouts. Thanks for the video Jonathan and cheers from Toronto 🍺🇨🇦

Hi Jonathan. I have this exact bass (with round wounds) and was one of your subscribers who wondered how it would sound with flats. So thank you SO MUCH for this very informative video. I have GHS Precision Flats on my hollow-body Guild Starfire 1 bass and they feel great and give quite the vintage sound. I bought the Guild used but in mint condition and the fellow I bought it from had put the GHS flat on it, so I have no direct experience with rounds on the Guild. From the GHS package you hold up on the video, I didn't see "Short Scale" printed on it. Can you tell us the exact model of GHS strings you are using? Thanks, Jim

Right on! Thanks for the video suggestion and for watching! The front of the package of these GHS flats says: 3020 Set 32.75” wind. Says ‘short scale’ on the back. For reference, on the back of the package, they’ve stated that the same gauge in long scale is model 3025 light (45-95) with a wind length of 38”.

Hi Jonathan. Granted, La Bella flats are a little more stiff (in my judgment at least) than these GHS flats. But can you attempt to describe - all other things being equal - what might be the difference TONALLY between La Bella flatwounds and GHS flatwounds? The question, as you can see, has nothing to do with the G&L Fallout bass. Thanks again, bro. -- Jim

Good question. I have Labella deep talkin’ flats on my Hofner club and recently had them on a Mini P for that mod series. My opinion: I find the initial attack of the note on the Labella to be more immediate and pointier compared to the GHS. The GHS’s attack seems to be slightly slower and bloomier. From this, it gives the impression that the labellas sound a little thumpier. There’s probably a bit more dynamic range too. You can get a different tone/sound from the labellas if you give them a strong pluck vs a softer pizz. Whereas I find the GHS to have less variation in available tones. With that in mind, I find the GHS to be easier to play evenly on, given the slightly smaller dynamic range. In terms of feel, they are worlds apart and I much prefer the light gauge of the GHS over the Labellas, in terms of feel. Hope this is the description you were hoping for! Thanks for asking and for watching!

@@jonathanwong458music Thanks. This is helpful. Your description is both nuanced and articulate.... you put into words very well what I have been hearing from my own basses, so I would agree with your description of the tonal difference between La Bellas and GHSs. I have La Bella deep talkin' flats on my Hofner Icon bass, and GHS flats on my Guild Starfire 1 bass. I also still have (and in utterly mint condition) the 1966 Harmony H-22 hollow-body bass my parents gave me for Christmas that year when I was an emerging adolescent wanting to play bass after much listening to Rick Huxley of the Dave Clark 5. Put Fender long-scale flats on it 21 years ago - they feel & sound great and I have no intention to change them soon. Talk about deep thump, it's got it. Still have the original chipboard case it came in, too.

Thanks for watching! Sorry to the wallet:). These GHS precision flats are roughly half the price of the Thomastiks and sound more old school than the TIs. They have a nice round fundamental note and do not feel overly tight under the fingers. I quite like how it sounds on my green precision. Buy once and leave them on until they break!

@@jonathanwong458music Yeah, I like how they sound on the P bass. My P is just a cheap Harley Benton I intend to defret soon, so didn't really want to pay for TI or Labella on it til I see how it turns out after all the mods. It had piccolo bass strings on it until the other day when I started stripping it down heh.

If you swapped the pickup what would you replace it with?
@jonathanwong458music
@jonathanwong458music 5 ай бұрын
That's a great question. The G&L pickup measures ~ 3.6"x1.6" so it's not a standard shell size - but the so-called "EMG 35" shell size would fit inside with a little wiggle room (3.5"x1.5"). Seymour Duncan makes a passive soapbar in that size and Nordstrand has a bunch of offerings with different coils and pole piece layouts in that shell size too. The non-standard size is one of the factors that keeps G&L users from trying different pickups. Thanks for watching!

There is no doubt, a longscale is a longscale. Period. However, this GnL sounds pretty well and seriously, we rarely hear a bass just on its own, but most all the time in a band context. And I suspect no one will be able to hear that difference. In short: Take what you like and play as you like!
