I have read that John was introduced to banjo chords and that at one point his first guitar only had 4 not 6 strings. Perhaps that explains some of his chord voicings in his songs. Strumming banjo style was also popular with an Englsih performer/ actor comedian called George Formby with a more traditional entertainment style and the Beatles all loved skiffle bands with players like Lonnie Donnegan. Your lesson as always is extremely helpful. Excellent teaching with the metronome too. 👍👌👏🙏

Thanks for warming and useful comment. I have read about John's banjo chords, too. His chord is sometimes strange. Unfortunately I don't know about traditional banjo style. But it must role important element of Beatles sounds.

George Formby came from Lancashire, played a ukulele and the Beatles were big fans. George Harrison at one time was President of the George Formby Preservation Society. George Harrison used to travel with 2 ukuleles just in case anyone wanted to join in. (ukuleles are tuned to an open chord so anyone with a sense of rhythm can sound reasonable on them.) I don't think John Lennon would be capable of playing many Formby songs though George could. George Formby was a huge star of stage, screen and recording during the 1930's up to the 1950's. His songs were very clever with erotic double meanings though he presented a naive persona. Check out his Chinese Laundry Blues. :)

Thank you, I have recently wanted to learn this song. The strumming is very difficult. Your hint "if you are used to leading with down stroke it may be hard" was spot on for me. You gave me the insight into what my trouble is, thank you.

@@KenjiMorita Thank you for your response! I will practice! This weekend my family is holding a memorial service for my grandmother and my cousin and his girlfriend are going to perform "In My Life". My cousin is going to borrow my acoustic guitar and he will sing with his girlfriend. He asked me if I wanted to join them so I am going use my stratocaster and do the intro/middle/end riff. I am going to learn some of the bassline and use that as a canvas to add flavor. I also want to see if I could play a slowed down improvised solo as I don't think I can learn how to do that "harpsichord" solo by tomorrow.

It's great your relatives are all enjoy music! I have played piano of In My Life and attached tab in KZbin. But this is very difficult. If you want to improvise in it, use A major pentatonic. With Eb note in Cm chord, it sounds better.
