An imperfect tape, volume raised as far as I dare, a few quick moments of pitch waver, warble. Still, very listenable and needs to be heard.

I was at her farewell. Still in great voice. She came in at the last second to do a Mimi after that. Was there as well. She still sounded good.

Thanks for uploading. I had forgotten about this performance. Kirsten was a wonderful artist who is underrated and sadly underrepresented in commercial recordings. She husbanded her voice wisely, never going beyond the roles suitable for her voice. Thus, at age 62, a dozen years after I first saw her Tosca (with Tucker and London), there was little deterioration in her voice. My memory was the only time I ever heard the audience's applause stop the orchestra for Scarpia's entrance was Gobbi's return to the Met in 1964 (with Tebaldi and Corelli). Thus, I was surprised to hear this performance again after over fifty years, and hear that it it happened again in this performance. I would be interested to hear if anyone reading this ever saw that happen with another baritone. As anyone reading my book, "Reflections from the Audience", knows, I wrote a "review" of each one of the thousands of performances I've seen. Thus. I had to dig up my review. Here's my review of this performance, which, among other things, explains the laughter just before Scarpia's first notes: "Nine years ago I first saw the great Tito Gobbi's definitive Scarpia opposite Corelli and Tebaldi (the next season it was Corelli and Callas) Now, nine years later, Gobbi, at the age of 60 is still the greatest Scarpia around and perhaps the greatest who ever lived. His entrance was marked by thunderous applause. The music had to stop. It lasted quite a long time and stopped. Just as the music was about to begin, another voluntary outburst began and Gobbi, very uncharacteristically for him, bowed! Within a minute he was back in character portraying the evil Scarpia as only he can. "Franco Corelli is turning 52 and his voice has some scars to show for it. Yes, it is still beautiful, colorful and exciting. But, there is something in the weight and tone that seems lacking. It sounds a lot thinner than a decade ago. But, he can still hold that "Vittoria" and and sing a better Cavaradossi than anyone else around today. "The Tosca of the evening was Dorothy Kirsten, nearing her twenty-fifth anniversary season at the Met, over 60 herself, but not far from her vocal prime, still one of the Met's reigning Toscas. With fewer vocal problems than any other Tosca her age (are there any?), with a fine voice and flair for the role, she more than held her own among the two male superstars."

@@leslieepstein4700 All perfectly stated. Bravo! Glad to know why the audience laughed at Gobbi’s entrance! At Kirsten’s farewell the audience also stoped the show at Gobbi’s entrance. He waited for it to stop, but eventually sang the opening line. Sadly the applause drowned him out.

Penso che la voce più sottile a parte l'età sia dovuto al fatto che in quel periodo Franco avesse voluto adattarla al repertorio francese, Werther e Romeo e Giulietta

I really like her sound. I'm so used to listening to the heavier female voices she comes across as very light and young no matter her physical age.

Dorothy Kirsten always brought a certain poignancy to her roles. The roles were multi-layered like LIFE itself. Her singing often left me in tears!

La Kirsten e Gobbi, erano al capolinea della loro carriera,Corelli era ancora in ottime condizioni vocali. Il lato dolente, era la direzione orchestrale del maestro Cillario, abbastanza dozzinale e chiassosa.
