Here is an explanation of the cat on the back from Casio themselves: Thank you for contacting Casio America. Wildcat characters are placed on many of the back covers of the standard model of the GW-9400. RANGE means "wandering" and "searching for ...". As the name suggests, RANGEMAN is named with the concept of RANGER, which wanders in the woods. In the same way, we have adopted a wildcat as a character that moves around the forest freely. By the way, this model is a G-SHOCK equipped with a triple sensor, so wildcat has three claws and whiskers. On the arm, the compass that is most used when wandering in the forest Since it is a radio-controlled watch, it is designed to show the characteristics of RANGEMAN everywhere, such as the tail that resembles a radio-controlled antenna.

I was searching to buy a new watch to replace the 9400 and I ended up buying a Garmin Instinct 2X Solar. The only smartwatch with unlimited battery life by using solar power. I am very pleased with it and I recommend it. It looks like a Casio too. Once you see what features you get with it you'll wonder why you pay the same for a Casio...

I got the GW9500MEC for Christmas. It’s my favorite watch of all times. However, I wish they had a MIP display with sapphire crystal. Also wish ABC sensor was precise. Nevertheless, this watch is the most awesome watch. I’m in love with it. God bless!

I have both, the GW9400 with the carbon fiber band. And the 9500MEC-1. I like them both A LOT. All 9500's should have the metal bezel, its a nice upgrade in looks and construction. The 9400 is a little more comfortable. But the 9500 has better visibility with the larger digits and full screen compass markers. Just buy both, one a legend the other its successor based on design and functions. Both get wrist time especially when bad weather is in the forecast.

Great comparison. I have both of them, great watches, but I agree with you, and I like the mudman a little more. But I have the same problem with the resin bezel on the mudman, it is deformed at the 12 and 3 clock positions, and the debris is stuck under the bezel and it's a little annoying. So I bought the new gw-9500 mec-1, the TLC version is not available now. But I like this design more, the metal pushers and the metal protections are almost black ion plated just like the bezel. Maybe in the future I will find a metal replacement bezel for the older one, the resin one is available. And if I remember correctly the buttons on the rangeman are stainless steel. And casio released the mudmaster gwg-b1000 in the same colors, and there is a gravitymaster also part of this emergency color series.

@JimKinkade I'm not sure if this is a widespread issue , but this metal bezel is a significant improvement,and worth the money. In fact this metal bezel version was even cheaper here, on black friday sale, and I like the new orange accents. But there is a possibility that Casio is aware of the problem and this is the reason why they doing this.

Great video, about to grab the Mudman MEC model but I do love that the stopwatch is instant with the bottom right button on the Rangeman…I feel like both watches complement each other and there are trade offs moving from one watch to the other, they can’t make the perfect watch otherwise they would not make anymore money lol

*Great* comparison, Jim! I have both a Pro Trek (PRG-330) and, more recently, a G-Shock (GW-7900). I happen to be bespectacled, but while I largely appreciate the bigger digits of the Pro Trek, I'm now awaiting delivery of a Rangeman tomorrow: between its particular functionality (actually *love* the concept of one-button access to A-B-C functions with clearly-identifiable audible cues, instant stopwatch access), and obvious overall ruggedness, plus the small fact that, at the moment, it's going for roughly *half* the price of the Mudman on Amazon. My game-plan is/was to replace both of my current Casios with the 9400…but you probably know how *that* plan goes with watch folks, right?

The buttons on the Rangeman are knurled made out of metal not plastic. The moudle is old carry over from about 10 years ago for reliability ( kind of like i wish they kept the 4.0 engine on the new 4Runner) lol you get my point.

Maybe I would add, they should buy some G9000 or G9300 Mudman first, just to get the feeling about that little animal. About the Rangeman, DeWalt is extremely good choice for a beginner, and relatively pleasant for a wallet, it seems to me like a watch itself is good. I don't think a Mudman is more durable than a Rangeman (even though a Mudman is in my heart), I think it's just a bit better protected. A best choice would be a keeper with a carbon fiber insert, but it's very hard to find it separate, and a right width. I would say that some visibility issues is because of the coating at the glass (or under). Drainage isn't too important in my opinion, since a wrist is always moving, so some water or something will always get out. ''Decoration'' screws isn't usually just a decoration, that's one more layer of protection, that decoration acts like a little bezel ''suspension'' in the corners inside. Special editions of Mudman means only one thing to me....forget about a finding a bezel, and the band. good video

Hey Brother Jim. I have a question. When it comes to the Multiband 6. Why would it be that all the way up to December 17th my G Shocks was receiving the signal perfectly fine every night at midnight. But from the 17th til now they will not receive the signal and I have them in the same exact location that they were receiving it in. Any idea what be wrong?

Both are great watches. I have had three Rangeman 9400s but sold them because of the bad fitting. The design with the long flat backside is like made for 20+ cm wristsize. On a small wrist there are big gaps on the side of the wrist. But Mudman 9500 fits very good on my 17cm wrist. And I am sure it's good on 16cm wrist as well. 9500 has 2cm shorter flat backside than 9400 which makes a big difference. Two things are better with 9400 though. The design is really cool and it looks better than 9500, in my opinion. 9400 also has better protection of the screen with higher edges around it. I don't find it necessary to hold down the thickness of 9500 by the pretty much lack of side edges around the screen. It could be more evenly thick, not only parts of it.

JK when using the compass or barometer on the Mudman, does the second LCD hands also stay on (compass hands and barometer hand)? Or does the watch timeout and turns off the second LCD? Seems like having either the compass or barometer always on would be a battery killer.
