This Core Concept video focuses on the Self-Consciousness section of G.W.F. Hegel's early masterpiece, the Phenomenology of Spirit, and examines his discussion of the position of the Master in the famous Master-Slave dialectic, which involves enjoying the recognition coming from the slave, but also the enjoyment of the products worked upon by the slave. The master is able to satisfy his or her desire, but does not develop dialectically any further.

Thank you. I've read Hegel's master-slave dialectic and listen to the lecture in class, with moderate success. You have given me in depth understanding to the point where I can now explain it to others in an informative manner.

This is good that final question about the master is missing something and he definitely no doubt about that. The master has a empty area spot or place with in self that is unable to keep it filled. Of course everything other then this one particular thing is and will be a placebo. The peace of mind in body and of spirit we have from being content is forfilling proud of self. If it's within my power to do good because it is the right thing to do I will.

I'm reading Fanon's 'Black Skin, White Masks' and he mentions Hegel’s subjective certainty in describing a case study of a romantic relationship in which a person of colour feels inferior and ends up overcompensating by seeking a high ranking white European partner (regardless of looks/character) just for the exaltation the relationship can bring. When I try and google search the idea I keep seeing results regarding this Master Slave Dialectic, it's in fact how I ended up seeing this video. Are they synonymous with each other? I ask as I'm struggling to find an excerpt that specifically elucidates this 'subjective certainty'.

Capital by Marx makes alot more sense after understanding this dialectic

It might marginally more sense, I suppose. This definitely is not the key to Marx's massive work

Thanks for the video, great stuff ! Does it makes sense to put this in to perspective of popular dilemma of, lets say rich or famouse people, to not be able to acheive recognition or love, or at least know for certain if their recognition is authentic or if they are only recognised for their wealth?
@GregoryBSadler

So essentially, when I responded to this guy on reddits desire to be sexually dominated, and maintain the knowledge he can at any point refuse, I am realizing true recognition precisely because of the consent aspect? Cool
