In this video we explore the chapter Self-Consciousness in Hegel's Phenomenology of Spirit. In the chapter on Self-Consciousness Hegel first articulates the logic of the ego as a self-active universal which categorically synthesises external reality before recognizing negativity in its own lack of pragmatic self-mastery. In the second phase Hegel articulates the way the ego is grounded in social mechanisms of recognition that are internally polarized between lord/bondsman or master/slave competition. Finally, in the third phase the ego strives for spiritual development by mediating the lack of rational social ideality. In this context the job of the phenomenologist vis-a-vis self-consciousness is to deduce the logical procedure in the emotional becoming of self-consciousness.
First published in 1807 the foundation of philosophy was forever transformed after Hegel was capable of articulating a higher order understanding of the understanding as the becoming of spirit in history.
This video is based on a 1977 publication of Phenomenology of Spirit which was translated by A.V. Miller with a foreword by J.N. Findlay.
