G WAGON DOOR LOCK REPAIR

G wagons in America are beginning to come of age, as they do you might experience the annoying door issues that can become worse over time if the door handles aren’t maintained in your annual PMI list. If you do happen to have any door handle issues hopefully this video can set you in the right direction to alleviate your issue. G wagons tend to have two main door handle issues:
1. The door lock actuator failing
2. The door lock button screw coming out of adjustment
My issue was the latter.
In this video I will show you how to remove the door card and door handle. I will also show you the location of the actuator. Some time lubricating and exercising the door look will fix stuck door looks for roughly a year or so depending on how often that door is used. I hope this video helps someone out there with similar issues good look and happy wrenching!!!

Corey Kearby Thank you sometimes you can lubricant them with lithium grease and exercise the actuator and they will start to work again. There is a cheap replacement also on eBay I believe. You can find the write up on one of the Mercedes benz forums I can’t remember exactly which one Good luck !

The driver's door on my 2003 G500 had this exact issue. The latch operated fine from the interior pull, but was beginning to stick when opened from the outside. Pushing the exterior button in no longer popped the door our, and the door had to be pulled open forcefully to get it to unlatch. I could tell it was quickly getting worse and in another couple of days would require opening from the inside to even get in the vehicle. With the help of this video and one from Fupabox detailing door card removal, I was able to fix the issue in less than an hour. Hoping the blue Loctite 242 holds it and I won't have to touch this again for at least a few years.

I am sure it is possible but I think you have to change your front bumper to one with the mounting points... If I remember correctly.

Stumbled upon your page and mannnnn thanks, I swear I thought the little things happening with my G were an isolated issue (isolated to just me lol) anyway, good to see some of the simpler fixes, I’ve had it since 2006 and it’s still in pretty great shape. Classic vehicle, want to keep it as a classic version.

Nothing coming off an assembly line has isolated issue. I learned that a long time ago. With the G wagons even tho they are hand made they still have the same issues across the board. Good thing most of them are minor! I honestly miss my G wagon but my city is flooded with them now. If I do get another I’m going to transform it into an over landing beast mobile!

@@KRTLyfe yeah, I’m in Chicago and they are around quite a bite but nothing like seeing a Camry or Ford Fusion, mostly in the “affluent” areas. I’m gonna try and keep this one around put some M/T tires on it, slight lift. Overall the truck is a workhorse. The new ones are dope but I feel they lost some character.

@@diaryofasummer I agree with you 💯 the new one is kinda growing on me a little bit they are way too glam IMHO vs the classic W463s. In our city you can’t throw a stone with out hitting a g wagon lol. There was a time when it was the exact opposite, a very rare enthusiast car but the Kardashians changed all that lol.

@@KRTLyfe definitely, there was a time they were super rare. I think now it’s just about the shape one is in when you see it. It’s easy to see a well taken care of G versus some “throw away” . The well taken care of G usually still gets the eyes and nods of enthusiasts and the casual car person.

Thanks so much for this video. The driver door 'button' on my 2012 is really hard to press. It does open the door but I feel before too long it will not work. Any thoughts? I've read (online) that cleaning or lubricating the button will help. Any suggestions other than taking the door apart and investigating the button itself?

Thanks for making these videos. Another thing that happens is that the inside of that handle (the spring to the push button) rusts and jams up. You have to dissemble and clean it out with some WD-40 or mineral spirits to get the rust out - and then put it back together. It's a little bit of 1/2 as fakes but it worked for me.

Help!! Rear door of my G55 won’t open with outside handle. I got it open with the inside handle but it was difficult. I took off the outside handle and everything works fine with that. But I did disassemble it and greased it up. But the screw head hitting the piece of metal does nothing at all. I even used a screwdriver just like you were doing and that flat metal piece does not even move inside the door when I press on it let alone reales the latch? I noticed the actuator is not moving the “door lock plunger” up and down. Does the actuator have anything to do with that piece of metal you pushed the screwdriver with?

Sorry for the late reply based on what you told me I would say you need to remove the door card to find the issue. If your plunger isn’t moving it could definitely have an affect on the other mechanisms

I ordered the actuator but never installed it because I had a different issue. I can’t imagine it being that difficult once you pull off the door card vapor barrier etc. if you watch my other video on replacing the window regulator maybe you can get a glimpse of what changing the actuator would be similar to.

Unrelated, but you have any idea how to fix a wiggly driver side mirror?! The pivoting point of the mirror is “loose” and super annoying. Can’t figure out how to tighten it down

Some times you can just "pop" the mirror back into its place by gently pressing it. On a different car I had the mount behind the mirror cracked. I had to remove the mirror and superglue the mount back then pop the mirror back in. Simple fix for an annoying issue!

Check and make sure you reinstalled the interior latch cable properly. It is kinda hard for me to explain but the collar has to be snapped back into place sot the part that pivots and pulls the cable can do it job properly to open the door latch. I hope I explained that good.

Man it is going to be tough with the popularity of G wagons now. My best advice would be to look nation wide and don't be afraid of High milage G wagons the engines are very durable. Just make sure it was taken care of and I would avoid any examples that have been heavily modified.

Mercedes really screwed up the doors on G Wagens. I think every door on ours has had the inside handle break or come loose. I have become a master door mechanic over the years.

Don’t put blue lock tite. Manufacturer did not put the lock tite for a reason. Self adjusting is needed.
