Check out Diesel Pump UK and his OM606 conversion kits for G-wagons.. Amazing. I'd clean up that AMG on the weekends as all that rust even underneath is surface. As for parts they're all over the place. 99% of the electronics were used on other SUV's and good pieces can be had for a song. That was a good score for 30 it just needs a guy who wants to spend some spare time cleaning it up.

I have a 2008 G500 and I'm the second owner. It was well maintained and I use a local MB master mechanic when it needs something. So far in 5 years it's cost me about 2K in routine maintenance. I've also had a couple of repairs that have totaled about 3K over those 5 years. I fix little things that go wrong to keep it looking and running like new. Nice thing is that the body style has stayed the same over the years (until last year, of course). Terrible gas mileage. Practical? No. Fun? Yes.

Yeah if you want a nice Mercedes SUV, the GLS is way nicer, a bit cheaper, and the new one is big and boxy enough to have a similar presence to the G-Wagen. Offroading-wise, you're not going to Moab, it's a unibody crossover based on a sedan platform. It does, though, have plenty of capability. You can take logging trails and unmaintained state park backroads that an E-Class would barely be able to start going down. That's true of a lot more crossover's than you'd expect, you can get very far back in the woods in West Virginia with a Nissan Murano. The cladding that everyone hates actually protects the paint pretty well; the skidplates won't protect you from a high-center like real ones do, but they do the job short of that; the added ground clearance is more than enough; and they've done enough to the suspension that you'll never bottom out. You're not going to bend the frame on a rock just because it's not BOF, these things aren't made of cardboard lol.

I have a 2005 G500 Grand Edition. Mechanically it is in excellent condition however the body is a different story. It has minor rust on the rear door and significant rust under the rocker bar trim. This trim attracts rust as water and dirt gets in there. I would recommend periodically removing the trim and cleaning the metal underneath. Another area of rust/corrosion is around the windscreen. The seal harbors water and eventually it rusts. The worst area is under the car. Part of the exhaust recently split due to the screws completely rusting out. It looks like something that was brought up from the Titanic! Luckily its only a $250 repair. I have been quoted $3000 - $5000 to restore the body of this G-Wagen to be perfect and completely rust free. I love this car so I will do it.

I used to have an ‘86 300GD. 3-litre NA diesel. Bought it used, ran it for 9 years, sold it to a friend. He still runs it. The engines on those old ones are almost indestructible. You will get some rust issues - rear corners, the bottom of the doors, hinges/frame on the rear door etc. What is rock solid and do not rust very much, is the frame (unlike other body on frame trucks). The frame is internally wax coated. Parts are terribly expensive, though. The old W460 series is much simpler, and easier to fix, but not really a luxury car.

I have heard that the steel used in G wagons is cheap recycled steel. Hence, they rust quickly. The good news is the steel is very thick and can be repaired quite easily.

They are absolute beasts off-road and anyone that doesn't believe that doesn't know anything about them. I'm a country boy that hunts and fishes out of my G constantly. It has aggressive AT tires on it and has been absolutely covered in mud and red slick clay on many occasions. I've always owned 4 wheel drive vehicles.

True their may be many codes on these cars but in many cases they may have just been triggered once or twice and the control units will automatically store a code. That's why most of them are just stored and not current. And from what it looks like, alot of those codes are actually caused by low battery voltage. Mercedes-Benz vehicles are very sensitive to low voltage. Obviously, but if taken care of they will last

An interesting fact about the genesis of the G-Wagon is; in the 1970's, the Shaw of Iran asked Mercedes Benz to make a military vehicle, which would be good for Iran's military. What Mercedes Benz came up with, was the G-Wagon. If I remember right, the Shaw himself, actually worked with Mercedes Benz, letting them know generally what was needed, although it was probably not more than some scribblings on a cocktail napkin, during the initial request, but, no Shaw of Iran, no G-Wagon!

Honda's and Toyota's come/came from an island where corrosion due to their climate is a threat not just to their ADM import models but also the JDM models. So it stands to reason that they would focus heavily on corrosion resistance across their platforms as a quality control issue but also cost saving technique.
