We love our GX and we loved the G wagon we owned. If g wagon parts weren’t so expensive it would be an even closer race... in terms of cost tho GX all day!

I agree with you 100%. I have a GX and love it, but I love the factory triple locking on the G. For far cheaper than a G, you can buy a couple GXs and drop in air lockers, or do a full off road build. In that case, the GX is better.

I agree depending where you live and what you use your rig for absolutely. Unfortunately we still have to be able to get in and out of parking decks and we don't have the money to be like Jon Olsson. Buy a G wagon 4X4^2 Modify the hell out of it! Then cut the roof of to be able to fit into parking decks lol. Thanks for watching!

If you have a loaded GX it has a locking center Differential, terrain mgt. crawl Ctrl and adjustable suspension to raise or lower the vehicle for off road driving, the GX is a very capable off road luxury vehicle.

We own black 2004 GX470 and a white 2009 GX470. Love them both. I've taken my 09 offroad. Jeep guys were shocked at where I could go with just street tires. Affectionately known as the Leather Mountain Goat.

I don’t think we mentioned it in this video but my initial interest in the GX began when I saw people driving the GX/Prado in Iceland. They had them all kitted out with massive tires for glaciers etc. We also saw some cool Prados in Costa Rica. That’s when we decided to get a GX for sure!

USA 1ST we haven’t done a lift.....but our airbags are leaking and it is getting worse. I want to do a minor lift but we live in the city and need to be able to drive into parking decks. I had a slightly lifted FJ80 with a roof rack back in the day and it was a problem because I couldn’t drive it to the office 😞. So we are treading with caution on lifting the GX. Plus my wife daily drives it, so we might just end up switching the bags for proper springs! PS I hate air suspension 🤣🤣🤣!

I’d say both. GX as a daily driver, G as my prized piece. Owned and love both and both are hard to deny for two totally different reasons. Wish i still had my 07 GX though. I actually would consider doing an even swap for my GS350 if someone approached me with the offer. Excellent review guys!

I owned them both, the G wagon is one suv that I couldn't wait to buy and after 4 years of ownership couldn't wait to get rid of. Piece of crap!! The reliability was horrible. The ride was like riding a horse and buggy. Cool points, G Wagon all day. I bought a GX470 afterwards and never been happier. The ride and reliability are top notch. No cool points with the GX470 but very satisfied overall!

Good to hear from someone else that also owned both. Which G wagon did you have? We had a 2004 G500 I ran it up to 200k miles and had no issues, only regular wear items on preventative maintenance. We also have a 2005 GX470 we love that beast as well! We are past the 200k mile mark in it and it’s just as good as when we got it. We just do PMI and wear items and it keeps running down the road. We use it for camping and general adventure as you can see from our recent Vlogs. I do think our G wagon was a bit more capable off road tho. The lockers and solid axles really make A difference in the rough stuff. Our GX only got stuck once so far in really soft mud after a massive storm.

OfficialEpic222 in this video the suspension was stock. We have springs in the rear now. Probably gonna. Lift the front 1 or 2 inches but nothing crazy, we still need to be able to get in and out of parking decks.

David LaHaie thank you we tried to do a very light fun video that wasn’t death by specs! I watch a lot of automobile content and I think some times they go overboard with specs and skip or glaze over what actually living with the vehicle is like. We tried to indulge on the other end of the spectrum. However it seems a lot of people didn’t like that. Some people think that we hate the GX after watching the video lol. Shawn Ballard hey thanks for watching our video! 💯🙌🏾 I’m really confused that people think we come off as preferring the G wagon over the GX lol. I’m not sure how so many people watched this video but didn’t see any of the other GX content we have on our channel that sing praises to the mighty GX. That being said. We concluded that we love both of these vehicles for different reasons and we actually still own and love our GX. However the GX will never be a G wagon and vice versa. Like we said at the end of the day it is really pick your poison. The G wagon gives you brutal durability off road ability and curb appeal. The GX gives you much of the same at a way better price point but most would agree with a lack of curb appeal but..... you get a much better ride quality in the GX over the G wagon. So yeah we love both vehicles they seem very similar but are very very different to live with and that was the point.

Nice vlog! My cousin owns a G-Wagen and it's in a class all it's own! Mercedes solid, quiet, quality and rugged military looks. A handsome beast. The GX 470 is that dependable Toyota/Lexus with a bullet proof 4.7 V-8. Parts and service for the German ( Austrian made) would be thru the roof, I'm sure. Some downsides to the Lexus : the poor m.p.g. ,the air suspension and the need to replace the timing belt and water pump every 100 g. Right? Still, I'd love the G-Wagen but out of my league. So, looking at getting the Lexus. thanks!!

Sorry, we forgot to get into details about reliability. However, both of these cars are very reliable. The G Wagon is more expensive to maintain due to higher cost of parts. PS: we actually owned both of these vehicles so we speak from our personal experience. I personally don’t like the way most car reviews are pretty much death by spread sheet. Our attempt was to do something different and more real world. If you look on our channel you will see we have plenty of GX content and it is our favorite vehicle which is why we have a GX but no G wagon at the moment.

The Lexus LX, the one Biggie raps about, is the one that's based on the big Toyota trucks. that would've been a better comparison, but it would be way better than that G Wagon in all comparisons besides looks/styling (MAYBE looks/styling).

Well Biggie die in 1997 RIP so he was more than likely rapping about the 80 series LX/Landcruiser. The W463 G Wagons didn’t start coming to the US until 2002 in very limited numbers no where near the popularity of today. I owned two 80 series one was an LC the other was an LX. They had the straight 6 motor in them and damn they was slow! They were decent in reliability but suffered from head gasket issues. My brother still drives a 80 series land cruiser. You can see it in our camping vlogs with the GX470. He actually owned two G wagons and the 80 as well and I’m pretty sure he would prefer the G wagon as well but that might be a good VLog to do. Would I compare the 80 to a W463 tho? Man I don’t think that is really fair unless we are talking about a really old Diesel grey market G wagon but they are extremely rare in the United States. Anything officially imported by MBUSA after 2002 is better than a 80 IMHO…. but only slightly better.

My G wagon had 190k miles on it when it was stolen and still ran like a champ! We just hit 200K miles on the GX a while back still drives and rides very well! Hopefully I can get similar milage on my 997! Thanks for watching.

On the Japanese corner you got the NSX, Supra, fairlady etc and a handful of others that have become classics. On the German side tho the list doesn’t end! Literally any pre- merger AMG car is a classic collectible and desirable.... any 911 is, or will be classic, collectible and desirable. I think you see where this is going. Generally speaking is Lexus more reliable than Mercedes.... Yes, but in every other category Lexus can’t come close, even to Skoda! Lol love the comment cheers!

Have a GX and a Tundra. The Tundra will be more exhausting to drive. Probably a similar difference between these. The GX is probably one of the most versatile cars made. Great off road or too the mall or on a long drive. Just need a few more potholes to keep the other cars off our roads. The back seats are no fun in the GX. The gas mileage is no fun. For off road, the GX is still one of the greatest. The Mercedes would probably break down leaving you to die of thirst if you really tried to take it on the safari it is designed for, leaving you eaten by lions. Should ask yourself which one you would take 2000 miles to Alaska in the middle of the winter. Paid $10,000 for my near perfect 04 GX, now worth $13,000 four years later? I would definitely choose my 140,000 mile GX over any 2021 Mercedes if my life depended on reliability.

Yeah my G wagon had over 250k miles on it when it was stolen. My 1999 C230K has over 300k miles, I also own a 1999 100 Series LC that’s about to hit 400k miles, we just drove it on a 5 day overlanding adventure. We have Vlogs on our channel with both of these vehicles. I have had excellent reliability experiences with every Merc I have owned. I can also say the same about every Yota I have owned as well. IMHO it boils down to the year/model you choose. I would feel just as comfortable taking a G500 across the Yukon Territory as I would a GX. You might enjoy reading up on the MB M113 and M113K engines. They are some of the best engines humans have created IMHO.

My parents had the 240d 300,000 when most cars barely made 100,000. It is probably still on the road. The slowest heaviest car ever made for its size. Replaced with a new similar 300d something. After more than a few $1000 minor/lights, etc repairs, they were cured of the Mercedes bug. My boss had one, a huge sedan. He knew his Mercedes mechanic by his first name, and he added a adjective…when he got one of his many huge repair bills, his mechanics name was “that F’N Brad.”

They are still designed for very hard off road use. They still come with Triple Locks standard, still ladder on frame. I really think the only difference is they don’t have a solid front axle anymore and have independent front end suspension, like the GX470 and the TOYOTA Land Cruiser. I’m not really sure where you heard that but, I’m almost 100 percent sure that information is incorrect. We owned a G Class and now we have two 100 series Land Cruisers. As great as the LCs are we still want another G Class eventually. Just have to make room in the Garage. IMHO the only difference between the GX LC and G CLass is Operational Cost of the G Class other than that they are all great go anywhere do anything vehicles.

@@dylantodd9574 More than a handful of my friends own G wagons From G63s to G500 and everything in between and outside of the very expensive parts relative to Toyota they are all pretty darn solid. I think most people aren’t ready for the maintenance aspect of the G wagon which can be very pricey especially if you aren’t the DIY type of person. For example a brake job on a G63 can cost almost $3K or a little more depending on where you go. Our G wag had 210K miles on it when it was totaled.

What I find funny is the popularity of the Cayenne off-road builds! My Cayenne was one of the most unreliable vehicles I ever owned but people are finding a way to keep them rolling. I guess the take away is where there is a will there is a way. Also because of the lack of reliability and expensive repair Older Cayennes are dirt cheap now. Ive seen them for $5k and less.

So I'm trying to understand why she picked the G-Wagon over the GX if she can only pick one. She said that the GX is easier to drive, more comfortable, quieter, easier to get in and out of, has more room for family and cargo, costs less to repair and maintain, and is her daily driver.. probably because of all those things mentioned and yet she chose the G-Wagon if you can only pick one. So we owned a G Wagon for 3 or 4 years until someone decided that they liked our G wagon more than we did. Trying to choose between the GX and the G wagon for us is like trying to choose your favorite child. I think my wife leans towards the G wagon for many valid reasons that I agree with none of which have to do with branding. We have owned 1 or 2 interesting vehicles over the years. So the G wagon looks much better stock, holds its value like a beast and the drive although different from the GX. The view from the drivers seat is much better in the G wagon as well. I lean towards the GX because, as I grow older and learn more about my self. I tend to enjoy vehicles that I don’t have to worry about. When we owned Our G Wagon I was always worried about it getting scratched , dented in a parking lot, is it making us a target, etc etc. See I love the G wagon so much it hinders me from really enjoying it. The GX pretty much is a disposable good time. Yes it’s a very nice vehicle but if I rolled it off road or branches scratched it I wouldn’t loose sleep over it or orrrrr if our daughter eats dinner in the back seat! No problem lol , where as in the G wagon I would probably have a heart attack! If the G wagon wasn’t so popular right now I would definitely be aggressively looking for one but I think a safer bet would be a good olde LX470. All of the capability I like in a package that doesn’t draw much if any attention. Way back in the day I had two 80’s ran one up to 400k miles loved that rig! Maybe we have different criteria for choosing vehicles but a major part of enjoying a vehicle is not having to worry about it. My definition of luxury is carefree, worry free, and comfortable vehicle ownership. With my Mercedes I'm always wondering what's going to break next and when. I've had to use the manufacturer's warranty more times than I'd like and although I didn't have to pay for any of the repairs I still had to take time out of my day to drop it off at the dealership to get it fixed and I don't see that as an enjoyable vehicle ownership experience. My time is valuable to me and the best warranty is the one you never have to use. That's my definition of luxury.

@@tmwei396 we definitely have different criteria and rationale. For us, I am the warranty, I never buy new cars and I do all of my own repairs. So I don’t even think in terms of a warranty. Our wagon had the Mercedes M113 motor which is arguably one of these best motors created by mortals. We had very few issues with our wagon, mechanically it was brilliant. I thought I made it clear why she doesn’t daily drive a G wagon. There are a few reasons but, the main reason is, that vehicle makes you a target and we live in a very dangerous city hopefully that makes it clear to you.

Wheels are quite universal as long as the lug nut pattern is the same and wheel wells and body panels clear. ... What I was suggesting was that the GX470 was based on the 'full-size' Toyota truck design (Tundra/Sequoia/GX470, ¿LandCruiser) Not the mid-size design (Tacoma/4Runner).

@@tmo2798 I respectfully disagree with you about wheels having a “universal nature” offset ,bolt pattern ,center bore ,brake clearance and the list goes on considering things that make wheels the opposite of Universal. The reason why I said that, is many Yota forum lurkers like my self, have tried to swap wheels from one platform to another ending in frustration LOL. Some Tundra wheels will fit some Land-Cruisers for instance but the window is very small due to the L-C ET. NO Tundra or Land Cruiser wheel will fit a GX470/PRADO. The Land-Cruiser, Tundra, Sequoia and GX share the same engine and transmission from the era. Aside from that it is of my opinion that the GX/PRADO is in a class of its own. It isn’t a 4Runner but it isn’t a 100/ 200 series or Tundra either. In fact if you google GX470 parts interchangeable everything I see come up is GX to 4 runner or FJ.

Compare a Toyota Go with a G Klasse …..a reliable great car versus the TOP A OF THE WORLD jeep……see on the market the price difference and then you realize what is the difference. The GX could be compare to the Mercedes M class and yes can beat that. But for the G class is something else. According to that the Toyota is a fantastic car with a reliability incomparable. WOOOOOW!!!!!! Sorrryy - you guys should prepare yourself better for this show. 1. The system you wanna bring up is called viscous coupling system and 2. Audi does NOT have the same system!!!! Not even close. Audi's Quatro AWD is based on TORSEN differentials which are patented and are purely mechanical (resembles a big coffee can full of gears) - no electronics, no silicone involved like (probably ) in the Lexus you're showing and many other cars. You both may seems like a cool coupe but it would be nice to do some research ahead of time, LOL. The Quattro system is so unique and closely guarded that even VW (who owns Audi) cannot use in their vehicles!

There have been at least 6 different types of variants of the “quattro” systems. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haldex_Traction VW has definitely used “quattto” in VW models, they just coin it something less snazzy sounding like 4motion and syncro. From all of my research done in the last 5 seconds “quattro” is just a name for what ever type of AWD system VW decides to develop and stick in an Audi. Doesn’t seem to be anything proprietary about it. Unless you aren’t under VAG.

Oh I found this on a site called. quattrodaily.com Rather than using the bulky all-wheel drive systems of the past, VW and Audi pioneered a system that used a center-locking differential that could lock the torque-split between the axles. That was improved on in the early ’80s, a couple of years after the Ur Quattro debuted, with a new Torsen (Torque-Sensing) center differential. The Torsen diff was, and is, a viscous-coupling differential that allows for real-time, mechanical torque vectoring between the axles. The Torsen diff changed the game for Audi.

I'm all about pondering, but let's ponder correctly. I wouldn't equate the G class Mercedes with a Submariner. The submariner retains most, if not all its original value. In many cases, it will come full circle and actually increase in value. So wearing a Submariner, if one can afford its initial price, is pretty much wearing it for free. Neither of these vehicles approach that economic value. That said, I bought an 03 GX470 last summer for 7K. I was offered 14K for it last week. And won't sell it because I can't replace its value for 14K. Personally, I couldn't justify by a G series Mercedes unless I was going to actually use it for what it's made for. Offroading.

When my 463 was declared a total lost I got almost 50% more for it vs what I paid so yeah. That was a few years back before the G wagon Hype and this “vehicle shortage”. Every G wagon owner I know, has lost little if any value on the vehicle. One of my friends traded his G500 for a G63 and made great money on his G500 on trade… We have owned a G a GX and now we have two 100 series Landcruisers IMHO its preference. They all have pros and cons.

Chris M not sure if you watched the entire video or not but in the end I preferred the GX over the G. Personally I find year stats and prices to be kinda boring. A vehicle is one thing on paper and another in real life. You might be one if those people that enjoys specs and there is nothing wrong with that, In this video we were more so comparing what actually living with these vehicles is like being that we actually owned both.

The GX470 has a locking center diff, but it does not have a locking rear diff from the factory. The Toyota Prado, the platform on which the GX470 is built and very similar, may have different options.
