The story of how I discovered a friend was cheating. I do a deep dive into everything hacking in first person shooters. Is there a future without cheaters? What can games like Escape from Tarkov do to prevent hacking? And how do they even work? All of this and more.

Hacking would refer to anything that changes the game or system code. Downloading cheats does change game and/or system code to allow for impossible things to be done. Cheating is using something like exploits and glitches to your advantage. When people use aimbots or wall hacks, it’s hacking, if someone uses an exploit like in the many games where you can use invincibility glitches, that’s cheating. These people in the video are hacking, not just cheating, as they are using software that changes the way your game functions, this is something that cannot be done with something like an exploit or glitch. And people will never stop using hacker to replace cheater, it’s too common-use at this point and more often than not, they’re more correct calling them a hacker than just a cheater.

I played with a friend from Europe for literally over 2 years, and never suspected him once to be cheating. He finally came up in one of the ban waves for a wipe. I asked him about it, and he just straight up told me "yeah bro lol. I was hacking the whole time". I was blown away. He always seemed like a solid player, but he never slipped up even once to give himself away. I was equal parts pissed, and impressed that he'd managed to hide it for so long. I don’t play with anyone ever again in any game they’ve cheated in. How can you have fun when you’re running software that just plays the game for you? I’ve seen so many cheaters say shit like “holy shit I’m so good” after winning or killing someone. It’s like their brain is wired different, if they’re told they win then it’s a win to them, even if they didn’t earn it.
@_XxXxX

The big problem of this video, other's videos, and general thinking about cheating, is that you guys are putting everyone in the same basket. There's is less cheaters that think like you're describing it, and how ret**ded cheatears describes it in this video, than cheaters that just cheat to relax. Quick word tho, listen to this g0at last words, because it's how you guys feel when dying from a guy that cheat in a correct way, you just don't know, and just take it as a legit death. In the end you'd think it's the same, but it's not. And no matter what you, or this guy in the video could say, if you can't understand what i'm pointing here, you're for sure, the d*mb guy out there, not the cheater you're NOT complaining about because you'd never know he's cheating. You guys just need to stop compare ret**ded/rage cheaters with the ones that cheats since years and never got caught because they, in fact, ruins no ones games. They just relax, and die in game when they have to die, but they still have that peace of mind about losing stuff, or gettting their play time ruined because they gave this raid to a guy, but they'll maybe take the other one to compensate, or even give a 2/1 ratio, or 3/1 to peoples. We (because yes, i'm not afraid about admitting i'm cheating, since in fact, i've never denied it), are not the ones that ruins your games, and trust me, watching video like this, with cheaters like this, hurts me as much as you to hear and see all that BS. When we, the closet cheaters are cheating, trust me, if you guys die on a FPS, you had your chance to not die, like for real, we do nothing strange, nothing impossible, yes we are prepared to see you, but never ever we are killing you without imitating a legit player's move by adding, reaction time, less accuraccy, fast check peeking or anything just to tell you "hey, i'm there, good luck to you". All of this to say that just like the cheaters in this video, you guys will never change, because even after getting the explanation of why most peoples cheats, you'll deny it and tell me to go fm because i'm and we are just like them in your mind. So, think about it. Who's the real problem there, me? you? or just both of us getting tired of cheaters and so for the good parts we just prefer to cover our back? Have a good day :) PS: the peoples i'm playing with hates cheaters, but it appears that when getting the right explanation, and not what you're hearing in the video, they suddenly understand that i'm in fact doing nothing wrong if just having fun playing normally, like you, or them. I understand that it takes some IQ to get what i'm saying, but hey, i can't save everyone from their dumbness.

Like the hacker guy said you can spot a hacker just by looking at his stats. Dont see why a AI bot cant be trained to look at player stats for near impossible combination of player k/d, survival ratio, way above average loot value per raid etc. Have the AI spit out 5 suspects a day for a human to follow them around for a few hours with a in game camera and watch them play.
@IgnoreMeImWrong

@moneyshock

Because historically statistical anomalies are unfortunately actually very common causing innocent people to be banned, and any fixed "ceilings" of suspicion inevitably get solved by the cheaters, who will then adapt their cheats to allow people to stay just under them. This is why statistics should be used to flag people as suspicious accounts rather then outright banning them immediately.
@MidnightMarrow

@@IgnoreMeImWrong Money well spent if their game doesn't die because of all the BS cheaters lol. While I agree k/d can be a typical marker, some games it just doesn’t work like COD. Given this is old COD like MW2 I had 14/1 k/d. And you might be asking how could this be possible? Super camper with claymores and sniper. Find the cheesiest camper spot in the map, cover your flanks with claymores. By time they start fixating on your position you have your kill streaks and you just run it up. So again in theory yes I think most games could go off of K/D but some will not work out so well.

17:09 this part made me kinda sad cause our CS IGL of 4 years ended up admitting to cheating. The same feeling of “holy shit maybe I’m not even good. Maybe I only thought I was good because my “friend” was setting it up I such a way that we’d rarely lose. I thought my game sense was way better than it was. Turn out I just had some wall hacker telling me where to stand and look. Absolutely shredded me when I was younger. I’m had a hard time enjoying the game for a while because I began to scumb to the other guys point of “maybe I’m just hit cut out for it.” And furthermore “maybe i needed the Chester to win.” I was a very dramatic kid but it was still pretty sad considering it was the end of our team. It left such a bad taste In our mouths and since none of us had the IGL experience the our “friend” had we began to butt heads about how to the game should be played. That was basically the beginning of the end of our little after school/work faceit team. Despite trying a new member here and there, we never recaptured our synergy and decided it was best to split ways lest we ruin our overall friendships over a game. Basically what I’m trying to say is fuck cheaters…

Found your channel through the mentions on recent WAN shows, great content, thank you for your work. I was an avid Team Fortess 2 player, +2k hours, and the cheating got so bad I stopped mostly because it's not a serious shooter like Tarkov and it seemed even more pathetic that people would cheat. I'm not justifying cheating in games with higher skill requirements, all cheaters are pathetic. Cheating in non serious games is just to ruin other people's enjoyment and I suspect it's only because the cheater lacks the skill to even attempt games like Tarkov and that aggravates their insecurities further. I have never played an online game against other people because I know it's a deck stacked against me. In general, people are the worst and even in real life, the majority of the problems I face daily are because of people. When I'm playing games, I want to get away from reality, not bring this "people" problem into the equation.

What they were talking about at 16:00 was spot on, i have now played this game every wipe for like 6 years and apart from learning the maps and navigating the menus a bit better, just general understanding... I haven't gotten any better at the game, in fact I've probably gotten worse... I can't kill anyone no matter what... I'm in a discord and new people join every now and then, within a few weeks they're 100 times better than me and they're the cool kids that get to kappa... I never get any of that, i might as well be playing deaf and blind the skill cap is just so high it's impossible, I quit... Anyone wanna boycott the game with me?

I don't understand how you could have possibly gotten "worse" lol. After 6 years you should have excellent map knowledge that would put you leaps and bounds ahead of somebody in their first wipe. I honestly bet I could level faster than somebody on their first wipe without even shooting a shot because I know where all of the missions are and 90% of them are just fetching notes or planting markers, lol.

Now I know where the spawns are and the points of interest and the game is 10x easier If I spawn at water treatment on shoreline I know literally everybody who spawned on my side of the map is behind me and I don't have to worry about seeing a single pmc until I get to the middle of the map. I can also just climb the hill and camp people moving to water treatment for easy kills. This game gets so exponentially easier the more you know. You definitely get way more kills than when you started.

I think a good measure would also be more communities, like server communities that we had back in the old school days of CS, TF2 and Battlefield. You found a server or community you liked playing with and hung around, became a regular, then you started to know most of the other regulars. This also diacourages cheating since it isnt as anonymous as matchmaking and community servers generally have admins that can take action. Sure there are bad admins, but I think it's overall a good experience for the gamers.

@@SecondFry oh for sure, it's not any kind of foolproof solution for cheating... hell, it's not a cheating solution at all really... more of an alternate way to play a game and engage with other players. The problem wasn't that such a system couldn't work... it's that it only worked on a relatively small scale... and usually only for a relatively brief period of time before different titles come along and splinter the group. Of course, I have no illusions... In current year very few people would ever break from the "company" servers even if such an option was supported. The company servers are where the MTX and the clout and the achievement trinkets exist. That said, playing the same game with the same few dozen people can have it's own benefits. It was like walking into the neighborhood pub... you aren't besties with everybody... but most people know who you are... and most of the assholes could be weeded out pretty quickly. It was quaint and entirely outdated in a world where literally tens of millions of more people are gaming online at any given moment... but it was an experience that had merit... Something to be said with making even passing and temporary acquaintances versus being just 1-of-150,000 randos spread across a bunch of lobbies.

A friend and I were running woods last wipe. We ran into a guy that killed us both and it didn't sit right. The way the guy came after us was very unnatural. Then we geared up and did another raid. This one went fine. However, the next raid we ran back into the same guy. We were split up and my buddy was dropped in a very unnatural feeling death again. When he saw the name he told me and I ran. I was quite a ways away from this guy and knew where he was because of my buddys death location. I ran as fast as I could toward the extract. He eventually got a sightline on me and started killing me. I dove onto the ground and started clicking attachments off my gun. To my suprise he stopped shooting. I got the gun partially scattered and he shot me again. When we looked at our insurance a day later the guy had taken all of our gear from the first raid but nothing from the second (assuming he recognized the names and decided not to take the gear). The problem was..... The damage was already done. I don't recall doing one more raid that entire wipe. We had just made it to max traders and were ready to start playing the game, instead I turned the game off and could not get myself to log in due to how those kills made me feel. I really wish they would implement a review system into the game, this game is too much on it's own without dieing to cheaters as well.

Back when I was new to tarkov, I had a friend who did exactly this. He was naturally gifted with aim. He was the guy who spent a few hours every day playing aim training games. He was highly ranked in valorant as well as Apex Legends. He got banned from valorant twice and apex once, and was unbanned from both everytime. He flaunted this. Looking back on it, I should have known he was full of shit. He'd say he heard noises and said his high perception skill was why - that he heard sounds above him or below based on how the sounds made his ear feel. That he could shoot people through bushes because someone in a bush made the bush coloration different. And he constantly belittled anyone who couldn't understand his skill. I quit tarkov and moved to SPT because of this. Everything I learned about the game was wrong, taught by a guy who knew the answers before the question was asked. I finished my first wipe (12.7) at level 17, my second at 32, my third at 43 with max level traders, and my final at level 12. I quit because I got carried by a soft-cheater for 1.5 years and it ruined tarkov for me. None of my accomplishments were my own. He just equipped a second backpack slot and put me in it.

A lot of what was mentioned in this video is very much correct. I'm a former cheat developer (not for competitive games, and not for Tarkov). As a kid I always had an interest in manipulating systems, usually security systems, my parents would replace the plug socket with a protected socket with a built in timer and I figured out how to access the clock inside, and dial it back so I could watch my favourite late night comedian, they would put software restrictions on my computer to make it shut off at a certain time, so I figured out by turning the time on my computer back the timer wouldn't trip and I could keep using it. So on and so forth. I did this throughout my whole childhood. I really didn't like restriction and breaking that restriction that shouldn't be able to be broken gave me a unique sense of accomplishment. I think it was my interest in this that got me into cheat development. I was nowhere near as proficient in coding back then so it was very interesting to me to be able to use a software to essentially break apart another and see how it worked and how these things could be manipulated to do things that were unintended. To be clear I was 13 at this point. Eventually I remember one day having an epiphany at like 15 that maybe my actions that I was doing weren't actually helping anything or anybody and most people wouldn't like what I was doing and the result of what I was doing, and that my knowledge that I'd spent a few years amassing by that point could be really useful if used in the right way and shared with the right people. I spent the rest of that day thinking about it, only to wake up the next day and quit cold turkey, I nuked my online presence so people would stop contacting me to do stuff for them, I lost pretty much all friends by doing this but I didn't feel bad about it. Over the past few years, I got into indie game development as a hobby and have been looking to go forward professionally into an area of computer science like forensics or cyber sec. I've been able to take all of this knowledge that came from cheating and creating cheats and have been able to turn this into my own unique skill set to the point where me and my testing is very valued on the team. I get the best of both worlds now, I get to be able to get the same sense of accomplishment by cheesing game mechanics and completely decimating peoples systems and breaking their games, I get to be able to pass this on to those people so they have indicators of where to improve on a product, and I get to be able to make systems for other people to enjoy. I get dragged in to test most projects, I get to look at people's code and double check its security and efficiency, and I still get to improve upon my own skillset. That being said, I feel badly about my decisions back then because I was raised better than that, but I think I've been a lot better for it so I don't regret it in a way. I don't recommend people to cheat at all, there are probably better ways to go about it for anybody looking to achieve similar results to me. As for the state of cheating, I agree that as technology continues to become more advanced and this advance knowledge becoming more widespread that cheating will continue to happen, but what I will also say is that I disagree that cheating will spiral out of control of developers. There is always a way to detect if it's a player or a machine, machines cannot perfectly replicate human movement (yet, and even after a while, would still be detectable). I guess it's just a matter of the developers coming up with their own ways to detect these cheats, which injection detection aside is often specific to each individual game. As cheats improve and begin using new technologies, so will the state of game development and anticheat detection along with that. I will also add that as many improvements are made it still won't mean we'll reach 100% detection accuracy overall. I personally don't think that such a thing is possible without risking severely hindering the experience of legitimate players. I think we can still make it very, very difficult to remain undetected though. As somebody that has now been on all 3 sides of this problem (cheating/cheat development, game development, playing against cheaters) I understand the reasons why people choose to cheat, and while I find looking at cheats/cheaters amusing to figure out why and how it works I no longer see the appeal in cheating. When you take the difficulty out of a game you also rip away your own enjoyment and sense of accomplishment that every gamer chases, maybe it's fun initially but after a few weeks you'll become very tired of it because there is no longer any challenge. The only thing in it for cheat developers is getting to babysit your community full of children/adults that act like children 24/7, having people jump on your back when there's the slightest problem with your cheat, and sometimes an okay-ish amount of money I guess. The average cheat dev doesn't make a lot compared to the amount of time they have to invest in maintenance, you have to be top 1% with monthly subscriptions to get anywhere close to rolling in the money, but at that point literally just make an online game with subscription option aimed at kids; you'd spend less time doing it and earn significantly more. Oh, and you get to watch your own back 24/7 just in case a very legally worded letter telling you "fuck off or else" arrives in your mail that day. TLDR Is it worth cheating? No. Anyway cheat developers often backdoor your PC for blackmailing purposes later, it's common practice, so you're paying oftentimes monthly to get hacked basically. Is it worth developing cheats? In 99.9% of cases, no. In the remaining 0.1%? Barely, but you'll have to pray to every celestial being out there that the company doesn't find you. If a game is too difficult or if you're having difficulty with the learning curve, cheating will not help you get over the learning curve. As shown in the video from the way the cheater moves, you will still suck just as much as a new player, you'll look just as new as the next new person. So don't bother with cheating, either quit the game and leave it to another day when you're more motivated to be patient to learn, or stick to learning with the mindset that the dopamine release will pay off. Play the game with a few friends if it makes the learning curve more enjoyable.

I had a similar kind of experience. My best gaming friend that I’ve known for over a decade at this point was a god at Tarkov. I’ve known this guy since I was 12 playing MW2 on Xbox 360. I got him into the game, and after a rocky start, he got insanely good insanely quickly. I thought this guy just must be gifted or insanely smart to always have amazing positioning. When I played with him, we literally *never* got into a fight where we were in a disadvantaged position. He’d stumble across crazy loot after skipping over duffle bags, dead scavs, static bodies, safes etc. One time he randomly said “Let’s check the SUV for the violet spawn” while we were on woods. Imagine that, it was there. I had not seen him check that car once. This was the epiphany for me that made it all click. I think I had been suspicious without actually knowing I was suspicious. After realizing he was most likely cheating in that raid, I thought back to all the other weird interactions we had while playing. He would always make it a point for me to see his stats on screen share. They were good, but not insane. Like a 2.7 PMC KD and 7 overall. I thought he was just trying to make sure I believed how good he was. As well, if I died while we were running thermals or good gear, he’d always make it out with our stuff. He never died first. Eventually it was confirmed one night after I had died and was watching his screen share. He slipped up and I guess hit his hot key for infinite stamina. He didn’t even realize but I watched him run from car v-ex all the way to outskirts without his stamina bar dropping at all. I confronted him and he tried to say he used SJ6 and Obd 2. I asked him why he didn’t have the icon showing you’re under a stimulant next to his head. He fessed up finally and man it hurt worse than when my gf broke up with me.

Dope video but I really loved the psychological part of why they cheat. Would love to hear a more in-depth deep dive into why.

I did a ton of interviews that didn't make it into the video. I even spent a good amount of time interviewing Evoker about his past. It's very interesting and I think someone could write a book about this subject. I would have loved to make this video 2 hours long and spent more time on that but I don't think most people woulda stayed around to see it. Maybe in a future video?

@@g0atmoth maybe break it down into different episodes and have a series? As a whole our attention span has definitely gone down. I would enjoy a long video like that, as I find psychology interesting but since we’re are talking about a video game audience maybe breaking it down would be better. But this is tarkov so you gotta have patience lol. Either way if you do it, I would definitely watch it.

@@g0atmoth does the idea of spending 4x more time filming and editing a long format video sound like something you'd enjoy? Then do it. Don't do things with only metrics in mind. I tried doing that, burnt out and shelved my channel. That was 8 years ago. I didn't even have the slightest modicum of success. My heart wasn't in it, I didn't enjoy what I was doing, I treated it like a slog of a job and the shittiest part was knowing everyone who had supported me up to that point had wasted their time and money too. So if you want to do it, do it. If you don't, don't. Good content will bring success, and good content doesn't come unless you are passionate about it.

cheating everywhere in games is so out of control that even normal people who despise cheaters are enticed to check the cheats out for a few reasons. payback being one of them. just a shitty shitty time of gaming we are living thru, breaks my damn heart :(

Seems so pointless to cheat. I feel pretty good at the game now and that came from 1800 hours of progress ya know. I killed a streamer once and some people thought I was cheating in their chat and it made me think does everyone I beat just think I’m playing unfair since I have non EOD but whatever I’m just gamin. Cool video Goat I’m sure it took a while to make hope it pops off

The cheater diallect is a form of anti-social narcassism, mixed with a bit of anger problems, and are just plain sociopaths. They arent very social people, they are lonely, and they suck at games and they get MAD when they get killed. So they start to cheat and they try to make other people as angry as they used to get when they were playing legit. They have this "me vs the world" attitude. I almost feel sorry for them, because keep down they are hurting, but the fact they have no empathy or compassion for other people makes me think they deserve their crappy lives. And if you are a cheater who thinks you dont hurt or have a crappy life, its just because you have never had something truly good to compare it to.

You ask the question "Why cheat", and while your points are valid, I think you missed the essence. People who cheat cant deal with losing. Your so called friend Evoker said it himself: "Why go through all that stuff for 40 minutes, just to die at the end?". He just lost, like all of us do on a regular basis - but he just cant deal with it. For others, who dont want to cheat, thats literally the allure of games like Tarkov. Sad part about it all, while cheaters ruin countless games for everyone else, does it make them feel any better? Maybe for a short while, but I dont think anyone will ever get long term satisfaction for watching their spoils of battle (be it loot, or stats or rank or whatever), knowing it's all from having a completely unfair advantage, regardless of how big that is. I just don't think its possible. So people ruin games for everyone else, for that fleeting but quickly dissipating sense of satisfaction and then they move on, leaving a desecrated corpse of a game. And once you have crossed that line, its easy to cross it again and again. And cheating is not only prevalent in Tarkov. It's prevalent in every online, multiplayer game. It's fucked.

my problem with this game is it's so freaking buggy its almost impossible to tell for sure when they're cheating, at least as a normal player. you had the whole rengawr situation and the other dev who rage banned a legit player and then you have the kevxxd stuff where they are with him the whole time and swear up and down he's legit and then the backend data shows a different story. but still the video was informative in a general sense

I'm pretty sure rengawr was right about that kid though. Did you see the way the kid responded after his account was banned? "I understand" is what he said. An innocent person would be irate after legitimately grinding the game only to have your account banned because of a salty streamer. rengawr was right. The little shit was cheating.

The biggest thing we can do is start charging these companies who sell the software criminally. Then at least the only cheaters will have to create the programs themselves.

If they make the cheats in a different country that wouldn’t work, also people can make them in their basements. There’s to many problems with your theory, I like the innovation but drug dealers sell drugs despite it being illegal and seeing other dealers get charged

There are some things that amaze me. First: how is it possible that, the tarkov community is linked at least via reddit, this clip has under 10k views? Because the truth hurts. This is an amazing video that shows how easy it is, especially for ppl who make a livin out of "streaming", with a little acting to look like amazing players. There is an very popular streamer once I was watching him, he was in Customs during the time when it was still with buggy sound. He was talking on comms to a friend and was wearing an Altyn... but what was thast. "I heard someone below".. .sure. f... off. I am pretty sure for ppl who make gaming a full time job there are even "advanced" 2D map overlays who give an indicator when someome makes a noise that "could" be heard, so that the f..... can "act" accordingly. The stupidity of the twitch zombies consumer group is unfeasable. Instead of punishing those bastards they give them money. You know what? Mcgregor once said "in the UFC everyone is on steroids"... I dare say that all full time / job streamers are cheating. They can just better act as many others and know when to lose, from time to time. Twitch is, like cheaters, cancer. period

The option to see the player who killed you perspective after the raid ends for everyone in it needs to be added to the game. And then once someone reviews the replay, another option to report them should be added that will separate normal reports from replay reports and prioritize replay reports to actually have a living breathing human look at them. There are only so many inactive accounts the cheaters can use before having to spend money again, and if they can get banned fast enough, the cheaters may not be able to profit enough from RMT for them to keep cheating

This is what keeps me perplexed as well. A friend of mine discussed buying cheats a while ago after buying the game. Managed to talk him out of it. He was extremely bad with horrible comms and would die almost every raid. 2 weeks afterwards he started performing insanely well dropping 3-4 + PMCs every raid. Headshots, perfect reading of enemies movement, always spotting guys first, never getting surprised. Each time I died he would manage to get out alongside stashing or saving my gear. It took me 250+ raids to get some of the items while he is finding multiple ledx , red rebels , btc and rare spawns every two raids always knowing to go despite his lack of game and map knowledge. There's no way for me to confirm if he's cheating and at this point I'm wondering if my account is at risk by playing with him. Is there any way I can reach out to some cheater and I would be literally willing to pay money for someone to check his stats and track him in game as he always dodges to share screen and show them? Wouldn't want to ruin a friendship over a video game but I want to know.
