G35 Alternator Upgrade (300zx Z31)

I changed a 280z from a 70-amp (iirc) to a 220 a few years ago. It really helps to increase the gauge on the negative battery cable and to add extra engine to body ground points.

This is a great video. I am currently waiting on my Maxima Alt to come in at autozone. I was considering a 350z alternator, but I got conflicting information on the forums about fitment. There are some that say it is a direct swap, besides the possible pulley swap, and others that say there is a fair amount of modification. Good to actually see all of the steps and complications involved.

I have a z32TT 180AMP upgrade,what I did was put in a shorter belt and grind the bracket..the TITAN 150amp is also a good upgrade as well.

So any long term issues? I know you mentioned the altima altenator went bad quciker than expected. Do you think thats from turning it outside of its intended rpm? I assume the main pulley to alt pulley needs to be very similar because the altenator has a range it is built to run at. Secibd question, did you get any surging after installing? When revving, lights all get brighter and voltometer surges up towards 16. I feel like this could be a bad voltage regulator, but it is a brand new altenator, not a remanned. Mind you, i know that it could still be bad, even new.

My 87 Z has e-fans and still has the stock 70 amp alt. I've noticed that my car tends to idle really low and when I turn my fans on (they just have a toggle switch for now) the car idles terribly and sometimes even stalls. I need to put a multimeter on the battery to know for sure if I need a new alt, but I was planning on upgrading to the 90 amp Maxima one for now. Do you think that will serve me well enough? I don't really plan on adding anything else electronic-wise other than upgrading to the Malibu fans

what size spacer did you end up using?? for the pulley offset?

I’d actually recommend going from underneath. You can find the workshop manuals free online, and they recommend pulling the sway bar mounts off and pulling the alternator out from underneath. I just did mine recently. If you go from underneath you don’t need to touch your power steering pump or anything.

yep I just took my box with 412s and a 3,000 w DB drive amp a bolt to the box just pulled it out of my car within the past month just because it was so heavy but I need to do something with an upgraded alternator too before I said anything back in there I have my wiring done very neat where I can pull it in and out easily and everything is contained in one box screwed together very neatly but I need this alternator to put my music back in

when you grinded that lip down did you use the factory spacer and another shim under The v pulley or is it just one spacer still it looked like I got lost right there watching the video I didn't understand did you use the original spacer and a small shim with it or did you just make one solid piece that was big enough to move the pulley up off of the casing sorry about the questions but I'm OCD a. f. LOL and I know I haven't said it at an in a long time but my grandmother bought this car from my uncle brand new and 86 he gave it to me and 01 and they both have passed away since my uncle passed away actually before his mother two years ago and then my grandmother passed away which was his mother maybe three weeks ago and she was the one that bought him the car originally in 86 but I have been going crazy trying to do everything my uncle wanted done to it now within the past year but now that my grandmother died three weeks ago I've even been going harder on it because it was her last thing she said dying in her bed was that when she got back up out of that bed and got well she wanted to pull the t-tops off and me and her go to the casinos in tunica she wanted to ride my car with me because she bought it new and she never made it out of that bed but you know it'll be there anyways I'm going to finish it the way me and my uncle had planned and like I've told you before I don't mean to bother you but mine is also an 86 I've had four of these cars all together I'm 38 years old I got my first one when I was 15 I have a photo of me standing in front of it right here in my hand it was an 84 slick top but that's what got me addicted to these cars my 84 slip top with the European dash that registered 220 LOL that was my first one then I had the 87 that was gold my 86 that I have now that is gold a 85 white one with an automatic and it was yes turbo but thanks for all the advice you've giving me up till now my girl laughs sometimes and says what are you and him competing every time I see you do something I do it too like the past power innovation delete on the upper intake I've got it I've got the prw 2 ignition igniter chip the fuel pump the headlights lots of things I've seen you do my money is just not real great right now or I would have a lot more done but I love these cars I don't think there is a body style that I like more I'm going to put an updated video on KZbin of all the parts I put on the car so far and how the car looks now inside and out and how it runs plus a video of all of my other parts I haven't put on it yet laying in a pile on the ground beside the car but there is a kind of updated video on KZbin already if you go to Google press your microphone and say a little more interior work that is an older video then if you go to Google and press the microphone and say almost done with the interior time to start on the turbo for this bitch.... that is the newest video but I have done more since check it out that is the newest video it doesn't have my headlights but other than that it's probably the most current

I haven't hit you up in a while cuz I've been upgrading my headlights my fuel pump I've got all new struts and strut mounts and strutting out bearings and brakes all the way around my door handles that I was missing for the inside my window switches and I think I'm fixing to buy some t-tops that I found that has like new seals mine leak a little bit so I cover my car up every time it rains but I found some really good shape t-tops for $100 out of that 86 turbo do you know if the front lower control arms will interchange from the turbo to the non turbo they are both an 86 and one more question I have for you do you know if the G35 alternator will be okay to mount on the driver side like it already is until I turbo it the guy told me $250 for the cross member the alternator bracket exhaust manifold and the turbo but I told him I didn't want the turbo I want to do like you did so I'm just going to get all the stock turbo items except for the turbo I'm going to follow your route pretty much but I was just curious I have a strong-ass old school Kenwood amplifier it's only a thousand but it seems stronger than my DB drive 3000 I have this little 1000 pushing 212s in my z along with some led fog lights and my new headlights similar to yours but the projector lights I just want more power so I'm going to do the G35 alternator and I was curious will it work on the stock side until I change it over and I'm going to try to send you a pic of my headlights you know you mentioned the driving lights you wanted to change them well I found a picture of a purple z online and they are yellow JDM looking driving lights I looked everywhere to try to find me some of those yellow lights and I ran across the video of a guy dying his lenses with some stained glass spray paint by krylon I did mine and they are beautiful they look so good yellow next to these new projector lights my projector lights came with some cheap bulbs in them but I went and bought some Sylvania SilverStar $70 light bulbs and put inside them and they are great the only thing I have left is it has a little blue bulb inside the bottom of the headlight I haven't hooked that up yet but everything else is hooked up and looking great thanks for the idea of changing the headlights I thought I would give you the idea of the yellow driving lights I just thought of something else my alternator is still on the driver side so if I do the G35 swap should I grab the brackets off of a G35 the adjusting brackets I know in the video you were saying you don't know how to tell you somebody to do it if it's still on the driver side well I was just kind of thinking as you were saying that what was I going to do because if I pull my car apart I need it back together that day that's what I drive so I don't know what to do and I want it to be able to power my music and my lights so I've got to do the swap thanks man sorry about bugging you I tried not to bug you for a while but then I hit you all at once lol

Have you had any issues with the stock wiring? was wondering if it can support the extra amps

I haven't run tons of extra electronics. Just e-fans really. But I did upgrade my fusible links to the box I make, so that I could upgrade the fuse to a higher amp fuse for the alternator, and when I did that I also put in a much thicker wire directly from the alternator to the fusible links box

@@TheZGarage Thanks for the info.! I'm not running much extra either. just an aftermarket stereo right now. I'm really only installing the bigger alt make sure I'm good for e fans (if I decide to that way post NA2T). I guess I'll switch out the wiring when I put in fans and do the fusible link box at the same time. Thanks for the great content!

Mine doesn't have a v belt since its a turbo looks the same as g35. Do I still have to change it or you think it'll be fine? Nice vid btw

I've heard of people using the ribbed pulley that comes on these alternators with their stock turbo serpentine belt. I can't say for sure but I don't see why it'd be an issue as long as the belt is lined up correctly

Yeah, it can be helpful to get a hand underneath though. You don't have to raise the car up all that much to just get your arm in there

Was the maxima alternator not good that made you want to switch alternators? Or was it just because of the amp?

The alternator I had went bad on me. Not sure why but if I'm already replacing it, I figured I might as well upgrade since I'm going to be running more electronics in the future as well

I'm at work just walking around listening to your videos play back-to-back like I have a test coming up but no I'm really studying everything I hear you say trying to learn this s*** I need that advice for my turbo and when I get everything here I have no choice but to both everything together and figure it out I've been asking around trying to figure out what is the ECU I have I didn't think to look into it I'm no good with software or anything like that so I don't know what I'm going to do about my ECU when I change it but all my thoughts should be coming in and I've got to be able to get the turbo coming

Ive heard of the python ecu but I've never used one or know anyone who has. I don't believe its tunable. I would get a nistune chip to use as a tuner since its available easily and there's decent support for it.

@@TheZGarage yes yes most definitely man I'm going to do everything I can do that you do my problem is having it tore down for too long at one time and I'm actually going to use that upper intake spacer looks like 50 bucks it gives you a little low end torque it says and it also gives you a little extra hand room to get in there to work on the injectors if you need to it comes with the little bit longer five Allen key bolts but yeah I just don't want to have it torn down too long at one time and I need to pick out a turbo real fast and I don't know what I'm doing I need you I'm supposed to tell my mom the rest of the stuff to order today I found that black horse racing turbo like yours it says a. R. 50 I don't know what that is it says it on the housing of the turbo I so wish I could get you to pick me out a 50 mm and be done with it so I could get all my stuff on the way to me

I don't think ar50 means 50mm. Just look at the turbo specs and it should tell you the compressor diameter

will a 05 G35 alt work I know where 05 is at LKQ it had coilovers on it believe this or not when I first spotted the car online it was beautiful it was a light blue lowered I want the wheels off of it for my z but I noticed the car was lowered on the phone when I first seen a picture of it so I went to LKQ to look at it and look at the differential to compare I realized I wanted the exhaust off of it where it's a y split into two chrome tipsbut yeah the car had cool overs on it the body was beautiful the engine had to have been blown because this car was beautiful at the junkyard coilovers nice factory wheels and tires no dents on the body made me sick I fell in love with it but I have to have a lowered 05 G35 I love those cars but anyways for that alternator work on my z

Yes, the alternator off of an 05 should work just the same.
