Daft thing is, by interacting with the photographer, the G4S guy is actually undermining his own position. If he REALLY thought the photographer was a risk he'd just phone plod and hope they arrive before the photographer realised what was happening. By confronting the photographer and demanding he stop filming he's 1) giving the photographer a legitimate reason to remain there and 2) he's making it apparent he just wants the cops to show up so they can enforce his demands rather than as a result of any genuine concern.

Clear violation of security: What ever happens, you NEVER EVER NEVER leave your vehicle or secured object to aproach someone who is behaving suspicious (according to you). IF there is a reason to be afraid, then CALL for backup and let THEM take care of the situation. Not you as the first guard on duty. Back to basic training, I would suggest.

Wigan Cyclist I understand your sentiment but your assessment of this is incorrect. Private sector security have no powers to command any member of the public to cease from conducting lawful activity just because they feel it is wrong or against their right to work under a false pretence of privacy. If a company like G4S are going to deploy individuals into the public domain then they have to be accountable and transparent with all of their public encounters and engagement whilst being proportionate in their response to any so called pre conceived threat. Better training and understanding of the law would prevent commentators like us assessing poor practice and would allow for better understanding of the imposition of a persons will (in this case the G4S operative) as opposed to the actual law. I support individuals for doing a difficult job, I most certainly do not support an individual trying to force their will on people based on their misconceived ideas of authority outside of the law. This G4S lad let himself down badly in this instance so let’s support him with training and getting public encounters right. I know we all want him to be safe, be able to pay his mortgage and never have to deliver wine gums (how do you know that he wasn’t delivering or picking up wine gums?). In any case, there are many lessons for private security to learn from encounters such as this.

MarineAqua45 this guard is in severe need of some training and his dialogue with a law abiding member of the public in this instance is inappropriate and disproportionate to the situation. Just because G4S are a massive private security firm, it would be naive to presume that they invest heavily in their training. It would be a shocking state of affairs if private security were to start hitting members of the public with batons in the street and I really hope this isn’t the case. It would be interesting if you could expand on this if you have experience of it. A security guard has as much power under British law as any other normal member of the public but it is clear that they seem, on occasions, to forget this. Dialogue is one thing and should be encouraged. Poor practice such as this most definitely should not.
