If anyone has a view on tents it's you Andrew . I'm an AKTO man myself . Had it and used in all sorts of conditions and times of year for over 10 years now , and it's still going strong . In fact I'll be out around Langdale in it this weekend . It's a great tent . I've never suffered noticeably with condensation , and with it pitching inner and outer together , I have to say I can't fault it . I have actually looked at the MSR Access recently and seeing your 1&2 made me smile . I'll hang fire for now , but if the AKTO ever gets retired , the cheaper and roomier ACCESS 2 might get the nod .

Hi. Thanks for sharing. During this Covid19 lock-down many of us have found spare time to use KZbin and join in these topical discussions i guess? It is subjective ... but there are so many different tents available to choose from, for the widening range of camping circumstances. Car, Pedal cycle, Motorbike, campervan, canoe / kayak or on foot? Lightweight 1 or 2 person backpacking is but 1 category. I agree it is always a challenge when balancing price, build quality, features, design, pack size, weight and roominess (even choice of colour) with each purchase. Nice to see and hear your thoughts from your own experiences ... always good. For hiking alone, i have an Akto and even pitched it on my decking last week for an "isolation" overnighter in my back yard... But as well as car camping with the Missus and needing more space (Redverz Atacama) i have enjoyed motorcycle camping (solo and duo) more so. This has become the hardest area to find the "ideal" tent for (for me at least) I'm in my mid 50's and now appreciating roominess in camp ! And we all look for different things don't we ? Like you, i have accumulated lots of kit over the years and hate to dispose of stuff so readily ! Anyone starting from scratch and beginning to source outdoor "gear" can be overwhelmed with the pro's and con's that face them in this subject. And every one of us thinks we have the answer. (and i'm no different ... LOL) Maybe you could do a summary of "best buy kit" for folks (solo and coupled) who are just getting into this type of leisure pursuit ? Just happy to join in the chat... Thanks again.

Thanks for that, yes space is becoming more important in my mid 50s too :-) when I had my motorbike I was using the Soulo for solo and a North Face Minibus 33 when two up, happy days, I miss the bike more than the tents tho ! A

Just stumbled on this. Wow. Really helpful. You have referred me in an earlier post (from your video about the helium f10 ul1) to the Rubens starlight 1. Am in tent hell. Can't afford to buy a different tent for different tasks. Just need a budget friendly 4 season ultralight tent for long distance walking and also strong enough for mountain wildcamping. I thought the helium might do it ....but yes the akto does look great. "Buy once, cry once," some say. My wife wouldn't stop crying if I got the akto though....

I would just like to comment on the Hilleberg Niak, that was mentioned in a post. I had looked into this model to, a possible concern would be if cooking inside the vestibule in bad weather. The vestibule door is quite steep sided and has no hood, when venting from the top zip, rain may get in. This is not through any experience, just something I'd read, if a user reads this they may comment. Also as mentioned, I had used an Akto a few years back on four season Munro backpacking trips. One attribute, it was a warm tent, never requiring anything more than a Rab Quantum 400, at least in my experience.

Great channel! I'm searching a solo tent for a long term travel with some hikes not so hard (i'm not sure if and when i'll go to Patagonia and/or Iceland): lightweight (everyday for almost 2 years with the backpack on the shoulders), freestanding (versatility) and preferably double wall. My main focus is on MSR Hubba 1p but i also search for something sturdier and not inner tent pitch first. Hilleberg Soulo, although great, is too heavy. Other 3 tents found are Big Sky CHINOOK 1p, Terra Nova SOUTHERN CROSS 1 (i'm 172cm height but i use wide sleeping mat) and Tarptent SCARP 1p: what is your order of preference? I also see Big Sky Revolution 1.0p but i can't find it in your channel and i'm meditating on Lightwave Sigma 10.

@Andrew Park @Andrew Park thanks! Yes, i considered both but i read about some condensation issues for both furthermore Enan is not freestanding and maybe Access is not too warm for hot climate? About Chinook do you have to proceed for seam sealing? And do you confirm the initial impressions on the not top quality of stitching and finishing?

Hi interesting accounts. No mention for Tarptent by Henry Shires, any experience with these? Such as Moment DW, Scarp 1 and 2. A early version Scarp 1 replaced my Akto ten years ago, also have a Scarp 2, interested in the Moment based on Chris Townsends reviews. Function and interior space of a Scarp 1 is superb.

@@AndrewParkOutdoors Hi Andrew, yes the current Scarp 1 version looks to be spot on and has attracted some very favourable reviews. Build quality might had formally been variable, not certain, never had an issue with mine. Communication / advice directly with Henry is excellent. The Scarp 2 is palatial, replacing a well worn Saunders Spacepacker Plus, sometimes used when my daughter is back from Uni within our Northumberland, Scottish Borders scratching ground.

I had a TNF Tadpole which I never really liked. Horizontal rain got under the fly too easily. However, the back up from Port Glasgow was amazing. Over eight years, they replaced the groundsheet, the fly, the poles and the zips FREE of charge. Only the top of the inner was original when I finally gave up on the Tadpole and moved to the brilliant Akto.

Many thanks for that overview Andrew. Just came across your channel and looked this review and the Minaret one - all very well made and nice accent ;-) Stimulates for fueling the economy... Ok, I had a Macpac Minaret bought some 25 years ago and was very happy. Some four years ago bought a Tarptent Scarp 2 and am very happy. Easy to pitch. A lot of space for one, enough with a small kid too. Clean, simple. Very light but so far durable (bougth a hyperlight mountain gear pac, this tent and a new therma a rest, while in Canada for a while, and that is below 5 kilos). Very quick and good answers to questions by Tarptent. So a pity you missed Tarptent in the review. Best Christian and thanks again for these concise reviews.

Hi Andrew like you I love the NAMMATJ 2 GT Akto & Soulo, the NAMMATJ allows so many options and comfort during adverse weather I keep meaning to reduce the amount of tents however reluctant as they all have their special applications. Recently I purchase the Lanshan 1 & 2 from Ali’s Express and given their weight and quality of finish I’m impressed however would not take them up a mountain and have not tested so far in really bad weather so the jury’s still out? Given today’s circumstances looks like we will all have to wait a considerable amount of time before we can head out. Enjoy your channels and varied locations keep up the good work and stay safe🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿

Good broad selections of tents. I hear you on the percieved pitching issue on the access (and msr backpacking tents in general) for me personally that's a nogo. Lately I've been looking at the tents from Tarptent, who are really exploring how light fully featured tents can become. Another brand that just stepped into my sight is Pretents, and primarily the Pretents Lightrock. Really stable, great door design, good weight. It fixes all the issues I have with the Lightwave S15, and comes in around the same weight. I would trade mine in for one of those instantly. The one reason I haven't ordered one yet is because I don't know how to 😅 That and because the Tarptents are so incredibly light. I don't use trekking poles at all, but the tarptent notch or stratosphere are reasons to explore that.

How old is your Mountain Hardware Trango? That’s such an amazing tent. Mountain Hardware has a tent with a three pole design that many call a Trango lite. It would be a good contender as a less heavy duty replacement so that you don’t feel like your new tent is too flimsy to handle some weather because it’s easy to get spoiled by the Trango strength in harsh weather.

@@AndrewParkOutdoors I was torn between the Hilight and the Rab Latok Mountain 2, ultimately I went with the Rab because it was 25% off, I'd wanted one for awhile, and I like the 2 side panel guy out points over the Hilight(however I wish it had the bug netting like the Hilight, may have to retrofit that feature in to the Rab). Hoping to test it out in the snow this weekend before it all melts away.

A man after my own heart!haha! I’m a tent fiend myself :) I have Rab RidgeMaster bivi, an Akto, a Crux X2 Storm, a Wildcounty Zephros 1 and 2 plus a Camptrails mini hooped bivi, actually colour dyed that one from orange to brown to use stealthy in the woods ;) I just saw today that Hille are going to be making a black label Soulo next year...that’s going to be my next solo buy...possibly!ha...not sure I can wait that long though! Would you still recommend the Hille Nammatj 2 gt for a go anywhere do anything tent? I’m trying to get my girlfriend back in to wild camping..she’s always scared about it collapsing or being destroyed by wind...that’s probably because I originally years ago cheaped out on a vango and it gave up about 2am in force 9 gales :( I’m trying to get back in to it myself, I’ve not filmed any vids for years, my channel AntsWildCamping definitely needs to be started back up once this crazyness is over 👍🏼 Just subbed too ATB Ant

Thanks Ant, good to hear from a fellow tentaholic! That's a nice collection. Yes I think you'll not go wrong with the GT , great all rounder if typically a wee bit heavy ( but then it is black label ). Happy camping ! A

Hi Andrew great video thank you. I have been looking for a new winter tent, looking to stay as close to 2kg as possible, u currently own a big Agnes seed house, its a summer tent and a Robens Raptor, 4 season awesome tent I feel super safe regardless of the weather but its 3.5kg, its a tad heavy especially in the winter where I tend to carry more warmer gear. I live in the Lake District and love to get out in the winter in all weather, especially strong winds. I've been considering the Rab latok, but its expensive and not widely available and the Crux x1 assault , I've not owned a single skin. I like the look of the MSR, access 2 but it's classed as a tree line tent, very few videos available of it being tested in high winds Though the videos I've seen no one ever seems to use all the guy line points, this has to really compromise the tent strength in high winds. I've also come across a lightwave g20 ultra, ex demo semi geodesic, free standing, which is also important as the lakes are very rocky and often impossible to get pegs in to the ground. So I guess I'm asking if I just want a winter tent as I'm covered for the other seasons, would you say the MSR, access with all guy points used and having the special Easton poles that seem pretty flexible and strong, or look at the single skin Rab or Crux . Any thoughts appreciated Andy
@AndrewParkOutdoors
@AndrewParkOutdoors 3 жыл бұрын
I think the access is a safe bet with the extra guylines and an amazing weight size ratio. If you don't need space for 2 have you thought about the Big Sky Chinook with 1+ inner? I love single skin tents for fast light single overnights but they are not ideal for multi night stuff where you need to ensure you're dry in wild wet conditions , though something like the Lightwave S15 is a great option.

Great list, you've had a few classics there. I just ordered a Fjallraven Abisko 1, was close to getting an Akto but the Fjallraven was £100 cheaper and looks like it packs down a bit smaller. It was a tough decision ha.
@VandrefalkTV
@VandrefalkTV 4 жыл бұрын
It's a really good tent, and though Fjällräven and Hilleberg have different solutions to things on their repective models, I stuck with the Abisko Lite 1 after trying both. I know Andrew felt differently, but that's what it's all about, personal preference and choice. :)

@@VandrefalkTV i am also considering this tent. How is it? I cant decide between the fjellraven and lightwave t10 raid.
@VandrefalkTV
@VandrefalkTV 4 жыл бұрын
@@michaeljensen6805 Oh man, that's a tough comparison. Hmm. I have no experience with the Lightwave tent, and spec wise they seem about the same when it comes to materials and weight, though I'd give the Fjällräven the upper hand because of their tripple rip stop and sil/sil construction,but also with the 40d reinforced lower part of the fly. Also, unless you're only doing good-weather (wild)camping, then the fact that the Abisko Lite 1 pitches all in one, instead of fly first, is a pro. :) Had it been a free or semi-freestand tent with inner first, then it wouldn't have mattered as much, but since it's a tunnel construction I bet it's more of a faff, then an all in one pitch. There seems to be a bit more space with the Lightwave tent, both in the interior and in the vestibule, hight and width. If you're having to spend some time in it due to weather or bugs or whatnot, that can be a point to consider. But, I've had no issue staying in the Abisko Lite 1 when I had it, for hours and hours. That will depend on your height/size and all that though. I'm around 1.77m or so, so not the tallest. It's really hard to make out how the ventilation is on the Lightwave tent, but I can tell you that on the AL1 it was GREAT. Both ends plus a top vent, and lots of flexibility with the vents. Also, the interior seems to have had some great attention to functions in terms of pockets and hanging line, for the space given. The guys, the pegs, rep kit, everything and every part of the materials etc were top notch, and I still have a Dome 2 that I use with my gf. Same materials and attention to detail and clever solutions. Seeing as they are in the same aproximate price and weight range, I would try and weigh the pros and cons with each design, as both need to be pegged out to keep form, but also the design solutions they have with every detail, and how that would fit your body height and size. :) I enjoy it, very much for a long time, and I know ppl that sweat by their H. Akto's and it's size, but that's a very personal preference. I no longer have because I love trying out new and different kinds of tents. But that's the only reason why. ;) Hope this helps!

Excellent! Everyone loves these 'top 10' things stuff... I personally can't get that 'inner pitch first' idea, so the msr never made my collection. At the moment I'm trying the budget 3f ul Lanshan 1& 2, but my go to mid range 2man is the Terra Nova Pioneer 2, and a great wee budget 1man is the Berghaus 3.1 pro... just sayin. Keep the great vids coming. atb Sinco

In windy condition and winter inflatable mat + foam underneath akto slaps me in the face with wet inner tent all night long. wouldnt' recommend it for anything extreme.
