I’ve been having a good time with my Quechua backpacking tent from decathlon. Dirt cheap.. been using it for a year now and had about 20 weekends of motorcycle club camping. Not a mark on it still.

My first computer was a big C 64. back in the Christmas of 1984. A cassette drive was another present that year. So I love the “old school” reference. As to the subject of tents.....I have found that a frugal buyer can find great bargains on Facebook Marketplace. A good example for me in the US would be a Mountain Hardware Skyledge 2 tent for $50.00 dollars.i priced the tent new at $450-US. Because of a brain tumor I live on a really tight budget, so spotting high end gear is essential for me. A recent buy was an Osprey 65 liter AG pack for $100.00, used only once by an elderly fellow. With a bit of luck and some research, good gear can be found by those who are willing to wait a bit. Having a bloody incurable brain tumor has turned me into an extremely frugal camper. Thanks for your videos the steak challenge video helped me deal with a round of high dose radiation this time last year.

Love the indoor camouflage. Hubba hubba NX 2 person tent. free standing. Quick to erect. Double door. £400 ish steep sided so you can open door when it rains without it coming in 2 porches, tiny and light, it’s well worth a look and now in green

Hi - great question - what next? Firstly - yes be prepared to spend more, but only on what you will love! Highly recommended 'Tarptent' from the USA are well designed and well made. Perhaps the Statospire 2 is a great choice 2 man tent with double vestibules / entrance ways and being walking pole supported the tent it's self weighs very little...

After a poor customer experience with Terra Nova I opted for the Robens Starlight 2. It has served me well. It's stable in strong winds and can be pitched quickly. It's relatively cheap in the grand scheme of things also. 👍

I bloody love tents. Great video. I have the Lanshan and the Banshee (albeit an older model) - I do love the Lanshan. The Helm 2 needs my attention, I think. Have you heard of the Naturehike Cloud Up 2. A lightweight freestanding tent - not a bad little tent- outperformed the heaftier and pricier MSR Elixir in 60mph winds when we went out once. The MSR was mangled! The Cloud Up still going!

Zpacks duplex tent, I bought the spruce green which is the heavier fabric of three colours and comes in around 600gms. It’s made from dyneema composite. It’s very strong and super light and compact. It has 2 doors and can be set up with 2 trekking poles or you can purchase 2 carbon poles or even a flex kit which makes the tent free standing. It’s a comfortable 2 person tent or very spacious single. I know the tents not cheap, but it certainly is up there as one of the best. They are made to order, mine took 6 weeks when I ordered it about 18 months ago but I believe they are around 2 weeks now.

If you do decide to spring for a Hilleberg, the Niak is a 1.5 man tent. It's fairly light weight and has a bit more room than a conventional one man tent. It can fit two at a pinch. It's a sturdy three season tent that will do well on the hills. But it will cost you an arm and a leg....

I've got a helm 2, had to be repaired already; the zipper on one door wasn't working properly, because the slider was cheap and wasn't closing the zip teeth properly. Got 3 vangos, a scafell 300, a Mirage Pro 200 (which really is unbreakable) and a cairngorm 100 - none of these have ever failed in any way yet. I've just bought a Helm 3 as I'm hoping it's a useful extra sturdiness over the Scafell for more exposed conditions, but I'm nervous of Wild Country's quality control.

I've got a Coleman Bedrock 2 tent. I find it very roomy for myself and my dog and all of my too much kit. The only reason the Mrs doesn't like it is because I always insist that she carries the "Tent Bricks" in her bag. Luckily for me and the dog though, she isn't overly keen on the idea of carrying all of the tent bricks herself so doesn't come very often which is actually a bit of a shame because she's really good at talking me to sleep on a windy night. There is one downside to the Coleman Bedrock 2 though, and that is that there isn't anywhere to put the "Tent Bricks" safely out of the way without them actually just looking like house bricks. Maybe if they made a hidden pocket (needs to be able to hold up to at least 6 Tent Bricks) then I would be confident in saying that the Coleman Bedrock 2 is the best tent in the world. Until then, or until I find the hidden "Tent Brick" pocket I will just merely suggest the Coleman Bedrock 2 tent for your consideration. Happy Camping, dude.

Loved this review! I have The lanshan and yep, it now comes in green 🎉🎉🎉 but its more expensive, got mine for £115 I think... My Personal pros and cons are pretty similar to ol Hazey to be fair... Pros: lightweight, 850g including pegs, actually waterproof, small packing size, double skin, porch! Cons: Condensation, but you can avoid it more by pulling the fly tighter, however this means it flaps pretty bad in the wind. I made the front fly section smaller by using duct tape and that worked at reducing movement in wind. Also, the pegs are just straight so I take pegs with a bend on the top. The inner tent also sags over night as tenperature cools. 😘

Lots of people will tell you to get a Big Agnes something-or-other... after a year using a Fly Creek UL 2, I went back to my Marmot Tungsten UL2. The key is the sil-poly fly, which is incredibly robust and doesn't sag like all the nylons on the market. It's a bit heavier but still completely manageable.

Klymit Maxfield 2, thats what im investing in. Brand new from Klymit and it looks as solid as a frozen rock. Their gear is the skits! Classed as 3season (full mesh inner) but design and set up is more 4season. Mesh or panel inner?? It's still bloody cold in a tent no matter what. More mesh means less condensation, just put a fleece blanket over your sleep bag if cold. ATB all, Dave.

I have an MSr NX Hubba, which broke, but was replaced under warranty in under a week, but would consider it as 2/3 season. With that in mind I bought a 3/4 season tent from Terra Nova, Laser, for a 5 week trip round Europe (the mainland). Both are green for stealthy wild camping. Easy to erect (phnarr phnarr) and both weigh in at under 2kg. Not cheap, but cheaper than Hillbillyburger and have great after sales support. I also have a Terra Nova from way back in the day which has been my "basecamp" tent for extended camping stays and joint walking trips.

Splashed out on a Hilliberg Unna a few months back. Great room for one, could fit two if close. No vestibule but can make an area by unhooking part of the inner tent. Can open whole side for great views out and pitching is simple (poles take some practise inserting). Not had out in extreme weather but am sure it will perform. Condensation not been an issue but have had the vents open at all times so far. Worth the cash? For the times I get to venture out probably not right now, but I don’t intend buying again in the foreseeable so hopefully it can be a trusted friend long term. Like the the foray into reviews. Appreciate your experiences. Cheers.

Sorry to hear of your loss Hazo. You have my sympathy. If you want a tent that will last years then I really do recommend a Hilleberg. They also hold their price really well. You could keep it 3 years and still get most of your money back. As for which one then that depends. I swapped my Akto and got the soulo. For me it's the ultimate 1 man tent. It is however overpriced now and overkill for most of the times you'll need it. If you want extra space then the Unna snd Niak are decent shouts as well as the Anjan. The soulo it a doddle to pitch and take down in all conditions. It's fully freestanding which is perfect for when you want to just move your tent that little bit. Decisions decisions.....

Mate, I don’t think it’s false economy to get another helm 2. You’ll keep buying a tent you like and enjoy, and the cost is the same over time as a more fancy tent that you may not like so much (but only have to buy once). I bought my helm 2 off the back of you using one and if I achieve half the value you obtained from yours, I’ll be a happy man. Love the format by the way, don’t think there’s anything wrong with tales from the kaleidoscope mixed in with your other content. Kinda tune in for you rather than your location. Definitely crack on with the vid of your knives and axes, would love to see that!

Get a Hilleberg!! You will not regret it! I recommend the same tent that I’ve got, the Hilleberg Allak 2. Got it like 5 years ago after getting tired of buying tents, and had some bad experiences with bad cheep tents. I hike a lot in the Swedish mountains. The HB Allak 2 is so easy to set up with there hooksystem, even in strong winds. And it’s a really robust and stable tent! Used mine all 4 seasons here in Sweden. Yeah it is expensive, but you will have a tent for a really long time! warranty on Hilleberg tents is at least 5 years, in some countries lifetime. Bonus is that it looks really good on picture! 😉 Thanks for a awesome videos! Cheers!! 🍻

Never regretted getting the Hilleberg Akto, but sounds too small for what you're after. The Soulo is more like it but watched someone, in the lakes, faffing around for a while getting it set up. Could have been his first time though. Hillebergs are tough as hell and I've never been worried when sat in there in high winds. Good luck hunting, as it gave me a headache with the amount of looking around and re-looking.

Do you think the relative lack of robustness comes from the urge to be very lightweight? My Vau De Space Explorer is (real world) 3.7 kg, very spacious, pitches very easily, inner and outer together with just two poles and very robust (and very old)! I'm sure if it had been built down to 2.25 kg it wouldn't have lasted all these years!! Hilleberg Allak 2 is 3.3 kg, but is very robust (and very expensive). If it had been 2 kg would it be as robust? I was on the look out for a Helm 2, cos I'm too old to lug 3.7 kg about nowadays, but I'm wondering if it's false economy. I really like dual pitching, but few tents do this these days, so Ill be interested in what you decided on in the end...

Right Uncle Hazo ! Tents then ! Deffo the Mountain Equipment Tundra 2. They don't make em anymore but you can pick em up on ebay for £90 ish (£400 new) 2.2 kg, roomy and dead easy to pitch. Been wild camping in mine for years. Mint mate ! Namaste 🤗

I love my Naturehike Mongar 2. 2 porches, great space, lightweight and cheap. Looks like a decent knock off of similar, more expensive, Big Agnes and MSR models. Not the best name for a tent but you can get creative and come up with your own name 😜

Got a Coleman cobra 2 about 7 years ago, is a 4 season tent and I've comfortably camped in it since. Was around £100 and weighs 2.1kg. Seen me through the toughest of times like over 100mph winds on Orkney islands.

I've got the Cobra 2, it's not 4 season in my experience - the helm 2 which I also own is stronger in high winds, and the mirage pro 200 another level again. Only the Helm is close to 4 season because the fly can be pegged so close to the ground. Plus it's blue, which is as useless in the wild as a box of wet matches.

If you dont mind the weigh too much the Robens Starlight 2 is a great tent and excellent in stormy weather. Good headroom and flysheet fabric is great as it doesnt absorb any water. Had so mnay tents it is crazy and like yourself trying to find that covers all bases is actually very hard. Sad to hear what you think about the V4 as was thinking about trying one. Scarp1 tent is a good tent that can do mountains and also 2 person if required. Best tent I have owned so far and done winters and coast to coast walks is the MSr Access 2. That good going to get one again. Atb

I've used a banshee 200 for a while, but I really need to switch it out. Its lightish, but you can get so much lighter for the same money. The worst thing though is that it pitches outer first (or all in one), which I just find horrible in the rain, particularly after a couple of days.

Have a look at MSR Hubba Hubba NX. Less than 2kg, two doors, plenty of head room (I'm 6'4" and can sit up comfortably) can't speak to durability as I've only had mine 6 months (but it still looks unused despite use and abuse). Don't bother with the lanshan 2. I got one after seeing your lanshan 1, really disappointed, just cant get the thing to pitch right (much like the hexpeak)

I’ve just ordered a dan durston x mid 2 tent off drop, won’t arrive till next April like, but it looks so easy to set up and lots of room inside. Uses two trekking poles to set up, so quite light, and it’s dead robust from all accounts. Downsides are; it’s about $250 delivered, but probably another $100 in taxes and duties, especially after Brexit. It’s also a mesh only inner only, and it’s a light grey / green colour, so not very stealth.

Bought Naturehike Cloud Up 1 this summer. The cheapest/heaviest (more durable?) version with green polyester. Used it three times in good weather. Naturehike has several models. Look at Melon Bites channel for his reviews. In spanish with eng subs. For my tent I can't see any quality issues so far.

Don't know if its been said, but if you want it to last years and not fall apart maybe consider a canvas tent like the Polish ponchos and add/sew in a groundsheet? Weight obviously shoots up with that by about 1kg but you'll be golden with all that SAS experience mate. Xo
