Gandikota was established in 1123 CE by Kapa Raja, an official of the Western Chalukya kingdom. The term "Gandikota" originates from the Telugu words "gandi" (canyon) and "kota" (fort), indicating its strategic position within the gorge of the Penna River. It became a prominent fort under the rule of the Kakatiyas, and later, it was controlled by the Vijayanagara Empire. Gandikota fort was a significant center for defense and administration during the Vijayanagara period, owing to its natural fortifications. After the fall of the Vijayanagara Empire, Gandikota came under the control of the Qutb Shahi dynasty of Golconda and later the Nawabs of Kadapa.
The fort eventually came under British control during the colonial era, but by then, it had lost its strategic importance.
