I have bipolar type 1, and I experience both mania and hypomania. What differentiates a manic episode from a hypomanic episode is severity. Basically, in a hypomanic episode, you're having manic symptoms, but less intensely, so that you're still able to function in your everyday life, and people who don't know you well might not notice that you're different. In hypomania, you may be behaving out of character and impulsively, but you're generally not behaving completely recklessly. In mania, you're behaving so bizarrely that even strangers would notice there's something off, and your symptoms are so severe that you're not able to function in your work, at home, and/or in your relationships. If you have any psychotic symptoms, like hallucinations or delusions, it's automatically mania. If you have to go to the hospital because of it, it's automatically mania. The lengths listed are just minimum length requirements, so hypomania has to last at least four days to be considered clinically significant, and mania has to last at least a week, but both can last much longer than that. So like, just for example, in a hypomanic episode, you might feel euphorically happy and very energetic and only need four hours of sleep, and you might have tons of creative new ideas and the drive to execute them, and you might be feeling extremely sociable and maybe extra sexual. You might be especially impulsive. So in a hypomanic episode, you might wake up at four in the morning and spend the morning cleaning your house top to bottom, then call your friend up to spontaneously go out for drinks in the afternoon, spend hundreds of dollars on your afternoon out and then ditch your friend to take home this guy you met at the bar and sleep with him, then stay up till midnight making music, but then the next day wake up at four again, go to work and fuckin' nail it at work and invite the whole office out for drinks on you afterwards, because why not? In a manic episode, on the other hand, you might feel literally insane with ecstasy, you physically can't stop moving, your thoughts are racing so fast you can't even understand them yourself, you can't stop talking even though you're not making sense because of those racing thoughts, you're totally hypersexual and feel like you NEED sexual stimulation all day long, you have zero inhibitions, you're acting completely on impulse with little to no rational control over what you're doing, and you may have delusions, paranoia, or hallucinations. So, just for example, in a manic episode, you might stay up all night because you're just not tired, and anyway you're too busy inventing a new language with which you can communicate directly with God, who has time for sleep?!, and you can't stop talking to everyone you meet, even though they're staring at you like you're crazy, and you're so horny you masturbate five times a day, maybe in public, maybe while you're driving, because you just don't have the impulse control to stop yourself, and oh you decided to go shopping? okay, well you'd never normally wear that shirt but you're so fucking hot everyone deserves to see you in it, so you just put it on and walk out of the store, who's going to stop you?, you're in charge around here and everyone knows it, but is that guy following you? he's definitely following you, better run, better get away fast, drive fast, get out of here, they're following you, and by the fourth day of not sleeping you've realized the most amazing thing!!!, you've realized that the entire universe is being shaped and planned around your will, and if you want something it always happens, so you don't have to go to work anyway, which is good because you haven't been, it's so boring there, anyway all you have to do to get exactly what you want is ask god, god will give it to you because you're daddy's ruby baby girl, so you post 200 tiktoks to share the great news with everyone and oh shit is that the cops no problem god would never let them take me in god would never--and then all of a sudden one day the glimmer goes out of everything, you're sleeping again, and you start to sink down, down, down, down..... These are obviously not going to be perfect depictions of what it's like for everyone, because everyone's experience is somewhat different, but it'll give you a general idea of what it's like and what the difference is.

I love when cis people tell me, a trans man, that I'm confused. Like questioning and confusion when trying to figure yourself out is normal, and shouldn't be shamed???? And telling all trans people they're all just confused is quite literally only harmful. Like yes use your platform, but only if you actually understand what you're saying and aren't talking over communities. as someone with bipolar 2 as well there is a very clear difference between mania and hypomania. You can just tell which one it is. It very hard to explain to people without the illness. In my case my hypomania tends to consist of a lot more energy where as mania results in more anger. I like to explain it as hypomania= excited toddle , mania=angry person on drugs. (please dont attack me yall if this is wrong this is just my experience and how i can explain it) hypomania afterwards feels like you just had an intense weekend mania afterwards feels like you just went on a 3 week bender

I mean she’s not wrong even up until like 3-4 years ago transgenderism was classified as a mental health disorder. Not saying trying to make it sound negative that’s just what it was. And it’s true that dna informs a lot about a person’s body mind etc. so saying someone is confused is again not wrong but it’s also not something that is invalid because it is a reaction due to numerous things. And lastly she is not wrong when it comes to lgbt and specifically trans suic*de rates and how they are not decreasing even in states like California where acceptance is extremely high. This is just a complex issue but so far it seems like what is being put forth is just not helping as much as doctors thought or hoped it would.

You know what helps LGBTQIA suicide rates, affirmation! Not telling us we are confused. We didn't ask for your help Gabbie, kindly butt out! Also I'm so tired of her painting symptoms of bipolar as good or that makes her better in life. I'm bipolar 2 as well and my manic episodes have been worse than my depression episodes, I've ended up in jail, overspent my account, up and moved states, and I don't think anything is wrong because I feel so unstoppable and euphoric. So I don't even realize how bad it is until I am over it and I have to pick up the pieces of everything I did. It's not fun! I work really hard to control and identify my mania more than my depression. What she is saying is coming from a place from a place of extreme privilege. She has all the money to spend, or the platform to say all these things and people worry and she has the means to get any help she needs. She can literally pick up any pieces she drops like it didn't do any damage, but this isn't the reality. Normal people can't just start new hobbies at a moments notice or maybe don't have support or money for therapy.... it's really gross hearing talk like this.

Every single one of gabbie's "apologies" is "I wasn't offended by what i said so you weren't either"

the amount of times that she says "I care A LOT. I really care" is weird cause she's simultaneously being transphobic. so delusional its creepy

Hypomania is less severe and can just be on a day to day basis. Where true mania can last weeks at a time and is way more likely to lead into a psychosis. So the stakes are much higher for mania.

Hi Adam! I work in psychiatry. The main difference between mania and hypo mania is that during mania, the person is exhibiting grandiose symptoms like the ones you mentioned. In hypomania, the mania is not as high or severe and the person may still be exhibiting symptoms of depression. Usually hypomania is tied to bipolar 2 disorder while mania is tied to bipolar 1 disorder (most common).

Hypomania makes me feel like I can do anything-- meet new friends, start new projects, clean my home, cook lavish meals, function on limited sleep, but you're still somewhat connected to reality. It's like... you are your highest self and life is beautiful and full of possibility. Mania is thinking you CAN do anything, but the brain gets overstimulated, loud, restless... it begins to take down your rational and function. It's like having a beehive and swarming going on in your head. Think of it as a spectrum; you can still function while hypomanic, but you can easily cross over to mania and lose all function. Mania is no joke and she needs to build a safety plan to work thru it so she can still remain functioning. I had to take off work/quit my profession because my hypomanic episodes were turning into mania. From what I can see, she is at the edge.

How does she not realize that nobody is laughing with her because what she’s saying isn’t actually funny….. people are using her sounds over their tik toks because it’s so off the wall and shocking. Her random laughs at herself really make me uncomfy. She plays into every mental health thing so much.. like you could tell she was intentionally getting “distracted” by everything in that one tik tok with the moon and sh*t.

Suicide rates go down significantly after transitioning when in a supportive environment. Other people are the cause of our high suicide rates.

This is her MO. She babbles with quasi big words and thinks it sounds intelligent but in reality it has the depth of a spilled drink of water on the floor and just as big of pain to try and clear up🙄🙄 I feel like I sprained my orbital tendons with the eye rolls on this one 😂😂
