How annoying is the scraping sound when I turn my camera around? It's caused by my fingers being next to the microphones when holding the camera, and I guess when I rotate the camera then it picks up the subtle sound of my fingers moving against the surface of the camera. It's really annoying me, but I haven't figured out a solution yet. There are multiple microphones in different places on the camera, so there isn't really any way to hold it without your fingers being close to one of them. One possibility is to start using a selfie stick instead of holding the camera in my hand. Not really what I want to do because it will be a lot more obvious that I'm filming. But that might be what needs to happen. Also I'll need to find one that fits onto my camera properly, which will probably have to wait until I'm in a bigger city. But I'm curious how much people are noticing it. I usually edit my videos and play them back while listening with earphones, so that might make the sound more amplified. And I do try to edit it out when possible, but that isn't always possible. So for now, it is what it is until I find a real solution.

I really didn't even notice until you'd brought it up. I was going to say something about the 'perfect driving out the good', etc. So, I played back at 4:34 and I finally detected that scrape sound artifact. It's not really that objectionable or even noticeable given all the ambient street noise, etc. At least not until you'd mentioned it, that is. Can you really sample it and then block out just that frequency/pattern? Is it identical each time? I'd really want to know if there's some cheap ai companion for the audio editing room, etc. I remember editing the sound strip on 16mm with tape and a razor blade. I guess we should expect the analogous & much more elegant tool to emerge on the market? Q: If you sample that sound - is it mostly identical each time, I wonder? Can you just use that sample as some sort of template to then block out? Maybe I'm over thinking this. One thing positive I'd complement is about your having sufficient volume - It's always enough to hear clearly. That's great because - if necessary the recipient can always reduce but not if the track was too weak. I hope you aren't losing sleep over how to sand off your fingerprints. 👍

I can cut out the sound easily enough in editing and I do that regularly, the problem is when it happens while I'm talking, then I can't cut it out because it would cause a break in what I'm saying. I get what you mean about some sort of program identifying that specific noise and removing it from the background without removing other audio. I'm sure that such a tool exists but not in my editing program. One of the reasons the audio is coming through so clearly is because I turn up the volume for every clip by 150% in editing.

Xώρα (Chora) doesn't mean country on this case. It derives from the word χωρίον (chorion) which means village. Χωρίον and χώρα both derive from χώρος which meand space/land.

The magnificent church you have just been (Our lady of Tinos or in greek: "Panagia Megalochari {i know a tonque twister haha} of Tinos") , has an interesting story as to how it was built.It is situated at the same point that was founded the icon of Megalochari Panagia of Tinos.This fact took place after a vision of the Nun Agia Pelagia who saw in her sleep for three consecutive weeks the Virgin Mary asking her to organize excavations to locate her icon. The excavations began in September 1822 (one year after the start of greek revolution) and initially revealed (!) an ancient temple of Dionysus and a church of St. Jonh the baptist but no any icon.The excavation work was continuing, when on 30rd of January 1823 was discovered the icon of " Panagia Megalochari".The construction had been completed by the 1880 and the church was given the name of the icon.The church and the island celebrates on 15th August (a national holiday date for Greece), when thousand's of orthodox people all over the word gathered for religious tourism.

Gabe, that church in the hill in Chora is the church of Panayia Megalochari. The church is an extremely important pilgrimage site in Greek Orothdoxism. Greek Orthodox believers from all over the world flock there all year round to pay respects. In fact from Cyprus they have pilgrimages going several times each year. I don't know if you saw a red carpet? The most devout crawl along that carpet on their hands and knees as a sign of their devotion. It takes several hours. Don't know if you witnessed that when you visited. Anyway that church is within the top three most important religious sites of the Greek orthodox church.

Just to clear your confusion Gabriel, here is a little explanation about the meaning of the word Chora. Chora literally translates to Country in Greek, but we also use it for every major city (capital) of every island, but this term is not used for the cities in the mainland. Chora, originates from Choros (Χώρος), which basically translates to area. In a more general meaning, Choros, among others, refers to the area where someone lives. So, Chora derives from Choros and what it really means, is the area where many people live. I hope this helped 😉

at 12 min. i think that was a windmill at one time for grinding crops into flour for bread. i did mention or copied and pasted that Khora was used as country, but it had many uses. one of the philosophers said something like "you never step in the same river twice". and that seems to be the same with many words they are plastic and flexible so there are many uses and situations. .. the country of, out in the country, he is from the country (hill billy), area, the area could be small or large, important or non-important, or maybe like county and county courthouse (where the seat is). as far as all the little churches. we used to say especially along a road that is where someone died in a car or bike accident. but I like your convenience thing for the locals who couldn't make it to the basilica. so maybe a priest shows up in every chapel and does a quick mass and the eucharist for the locals. Catholics need to attend mass every week if I'm not mistaken. so this makes it easier for grandma to go to church. tinos looks incredible. oops, now you just found a windmill. so scratch that last one. Tinos was great.

In the 19th century when the population peaked it was around 20k now it's around 10k and increasing slightly, as more people from the mainland want to get away from the degeneracy of the big cities.

I'm loving the Greece video series. Could you briefly comment on the sanitation situation please? In a recent video on the 'My Greek Lifestyle' channel, it was mentioned that it is generally strictly forbidden in Greece to flush used toilet paper down the toilet 😦 and that Ottoman-style toilets (holes in the floor) can still be found in some places. Has this been your experience?

Τoilet paper is such big thing for some of you.. we dont flush the toilet paper, because our sewerage system is thousands years old and if we want to replace it we have to demolish half of our ancient cities, any way there no turkish style toilets since the 40s dont worry..

I lived on Corfu and you can’t flush toilet paper away in the toilet there. It’s such a small thing - you get used to putting it in the bin - no it doesn’t smell if you use common sense in the way you put it in the bin. All the toilets I came across were the usual western style toilets.

@Jdnost We usually hire Albanians to Throw the toilet paper bins in to the garbage, since the late 80s,so we have no worries... On the other hand if you believe that Greece is a third world country you can always visit Turkey were you gonna fit, perfectly...no worries either..

The orchards are full of trees, particularly lemon and orange ones.” But video shows the dry hills, as if they were fully cultivated in the past. Yannoulis Chalepas is a major 19th century sculptor. A lot of his stuff is also in Athens, both outdoors, and in the National Glyptotheque (modern sculpture museum). Very nice find.

Congratulation on visiting the 50th Greek island. Tinos is amazing and lovely. Xώра means a country, a state η xώра a country. Most of the Greek villagers call the town and the capital η Xώра - area. On the Greek island, there are a lot of little towns called xώра. They are neither town, nor a village and something middle. To xωрιó means a village. Yes, the word στáση means a stop as a bus stop.

I was told the islands in pre Christian times had pagan shrines at many sites such as springs, coves, overlooks or wherever. Christianity came along and a local policy developed of replacing any pagan site with a church.

Just clicked on this video and same thing happened to me in Crete last month. I was woken at about 7am with furious beeping of a horn and shouting, came out to find the garbage truck right be my car and they had put a note on my windshield so moved the car. There are many saints in Greek Orthodox religion so there are many churches built to honor different saints. Also in some islands for example Sifnos,every family has its own church to celebrate every year. The family is the care taker of its church, responsible of its well maintenance.

The small chapels on the islands are family chapels. When people die they are interned in the local grave yard and after a number of years the bones are transferred to the family Chapel and usually positioned under the floor.

There are a few reasons that happen many chappels to be at remote areas and in high altitude.First, it has to do mainly with the faithfulness of the inhabitants (villagers) who show their dedication building them everywhere is visible from a distance in respond of their prays.

2:20 Χώρα/Chora/Hóra mainly means country, but it was also the place where Greek islands had their main castle and government headquarters. Nowadays "hóra" is usually the main town of the island. You'll probably read many different interpretations of what χώρα means, but that's because most people don't bother looking up the actual historical meaning and so they just come up with their own ideas or they take what their parents told them for granted.

About the churches, might be similar to Romania, where wealthy families would found a church or a priory in their name, mainly because of religious factors. Most of the churches were build in the late 1800's and early 1900's. When a family member would get sick, if that family was wealthy enough, they would be told to build a church and prey for that person's heath.

The reason for the many churches in random places in Greece are the offerings from each family in a village or a member of each family,in remembering of a beloved person,to praise the local protector-saint of the city/village or to beg for the healing of a sick family member in the name of a particular saint, who is remembered for certain healings and wonders with sick persons..Many saints also were born in those lands,became martyrs and remembered foldly in each area.Other reason is the marking of a path or a private field or even to mark the boundaries from one village to the other, or a shelter for people passing by..and also for less taxes. Of course in antiquity the use of many shrines or temples was exactly the same.
