Gabriel ,living here as a local can be very frustrating. But your videos remind me that this is probably the best holiday destination on the planet. do you agree? I don't think i am being even patriotic saying that. Including everything you want in a destination (safety,good weather,beaches, history ,nice people,good food,locals speaking basic English) it really has it all. Even affordability,if you count what other European countries like Italy or Spain charge for a similar "package"

Gabriel, since you mentioned you booked a flight to Thessaloniki. Visit northeast Greece, my homeland. You can use the buses KTEL and visit Kavala very nice city that remotely resembles Monaco. Then go to Thassos a green island with very good beaches. Then, continue to Xanthi, which has an old preserved town. From there , you visit the lake Vistonida, and you end up at Alexandroupolis, where you catch a ferry to Samothraki, an unknown island, even to Greeks. Finally, Alexandroupolis has an airport with daily fights to Athens and Crete every few days.

I heard somewhere that Skyros is important to the Greek airforce and military because of its remote location, I'm not sure how true that is but it would explain that imposing Byzantine castle you found as it's strategic.

Dark Prison Skyros: The hole for water in the Dark Prison of Skyros served a crucial function for the prisoners held there. In such oppressive and harsh conditions, access to water was essential for survival. The hole was designed to allow a limited amount of water to enter the cell, providing prisoners with the bare minimum they needed to stay hydrated. Prisoners would have to rely on this small opening to receive their ration of water, which was often meager. This lack of adequate water supply added to the overall suffering and dehumanization experienced by those imprisoned in the Dark Prison. The presence of the water hole highlights the deliberate and calculated nature of the prison's design, emphasizing the control and power wielded by those in charge over the lives of the prisoners. It serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities faced by individuals who were confined within its walls.

Might be used as a prison for some time but that was definitely a cister.

Geia sou, Gabriel! We (my husband and myself) spent Easter in Skyros....we wanted so much to meet you ...now back In Athens. Two of the best places to eat at are Mouries and Agios Petros. The reason why "Dark Prison" at the top of the castle did not make any sense as a huge cistern, was that the door you walked through to go into the "Dark Prison" monument is a modern addition; it was not actually there when the cistern, 7 meters deep, was in use. Enjoy!
@GabrielTravelerVideos8 ай бұрын
I see, so it was actually a cistern originally, then they put a door in and made it a prison?
@zoeknows8 ай бұрын
@@GabrielTravelerVideos My husband and I were puzzled by it just like you did. The fact about the door is actually mentioned near the end of the text that you read before going in; you missed that part just like we did, and we went back and read the whole thing through, and got to that crucial part of the story of the monument's restoration. I am guessing many people have this experience when visiting the top of the castle. The name is misleading. It was not an actual prison, only a huge cistern.

25 hundred years ago, isn't prehistoric,it's not even close to the thousands of years, that the newer findings prove about Greek and Minoans. Greek history goes way further back in time, compared to what we thought it would. Every now and then, they discover advanced civilizations, under the known ones here in Greece, or on random locations. The last time I read on new archeological findings, they found 2 store buildings, with technology that can't be found until thousands of years later, yet that ancient Greek town,dates 3000+ thousands years,before the early Minoan civilization...Archanthropus of petralona Greece, dates back between 240,000 and 160,000 years old!
