Just wanted point out something. Bangladesh had muslim influence way before the 1600s. We didn't become 90% muslim in just the span of 400 years. Arab, persian and turkish traders/preachers used to come here via the chittagong port during the 1000s. At this time bangladesh was majority buddhist rather than hindu (Just like the present day Sril Lanka). One of the notable preachers' name that you may have come upon is Hazrat shahjalal. It is the name of our airport. He came to Bangladesh around the 1200s. But yeah we consistently get hindu influence as india is our neighbour. Bangladesh was already a majority muslim nation during the 1400s. At that time we were ruled by the bengal sultanate. Bengal sultanate is different from the Mughal although both were turks. The center of bengal sultanate was in Bangladesh but for the mughals it was in northern India. At that time bangladesh was very rich. We had the 6th largest GDP in the world and was the center of Asia just like how new york is the center of USA.

Hello Gabriel, just wanted to inform u that saree is a traditional dress for women of some South Asian ethnicity (including Bengali) , it is not related to religion or believe but it's related to ethnicity. Bangladesh is a county of diverse ethnicity , so other than saree there are also other type of clothes worn by other ethnicities. In case of Islam , it doesn't force any one to wear a burqa or a hijab or saree , but it is refer to wear modest clothes for both men and women. It depends on a person what she wants to wear , no one can force her , also according to the law of Bangladesh it depends on the person which religion he/ she wants to follow , how much wants to follow or what he / she wants to wear. Yes, for the same reason that New Orleans was the richest city in the US in the early 1800s: before railways, everything from the Ganges watershed (like everything from the Mississippi watershed in the US) had to travel by boat to reach international ports, hence the wealth of the provinces at the mouth of those rivers.

@Gabriel, from the video it seems like you may have a perception that women in Bangladesh are forced to wear burqa, in fact they are not; it's a matter of choice, that's why you see some of the women wearing burqas (on top of sarees etc.), some are just sarees or other traditional dresses. It's great to know that you have keen interest in the history, culture and archeology of Bangladesh. Have a great time traveling across BD! You would probably enjoy the countryside as well - green, calm and quiet; cities are super chaotic, even for myself being born and raised in Bangladesh (living in the US since my college years), I find it very chaotic in the cities in Bangladesh.

Traditionally, we got more Indian influence than Arab Influence. First of all, we are Bengali. As Bengalis, we have our own culture and traditions. Ladies don't usually wear Borkha here except in village areas, and more conservative families wear burkha. Most of the ladies wear Sharee or kameez.

You gotta go to Coxs Bazar and stay in a quiet hotel (away from the rowdy main beaches) and check out beaches! Take a walk on the beaches and stuff. Try the marine Drive, try seafood pizza and vetki fry at Sundancer Cafe (or any quieter beachside restaurants) during the evening (or after the sun goes down)! We will love to watch that video and I honestly believe, so will your viewers!

Bangladesh(Bengal) was the crown Jewel of British India and it produced 27% of the GDP of British India. The rest of India was mostly eternal poor due to the caste system and they spent more time washing Shivalinga(penis of shiva) than working or producing something. The British first colonized Bengal and after that whole of India in 50 years' time. The capital of British India was Calcutta, Bengal until 1911.

In Bengali pronunciation, the 's' sound usually becomes 'sh'...so the Hindi/Sanskrit 'Saree' is pronounced 'Sharee' both in Bangladesh and W Bengal ( India)...fyi. Most of ancient Bengal ( undivided, that included parts of Bihar and Odisha) were 'Sanatana' followers ( "Hindu') or some local deities...later, a large proportion adopted Buddhism since the advent of the path around 500 BC...Bengal was one of the MOST important centres of Buddhism. In fact, the famous Buddhist figure 'Atish Dipankar' was a Bengali and hailed fr a place just North of Dhaka, called Munshiganj...

The entire region known as Bengal had thrived and prospered much more than other parts of India which were more defiant and less privileged than Bengal which is why they were rewarded by the British who made Calcutta the capital under their rule and afterwards when Vengal progressed faster than the rest of the country and had more roads they even had more protests and protest marches against the British Raj on them which is why people feel bengal produced tonnes of freedom fighters .Fact is , Bengal was far more advanced than the rest of India at the time which was vastly illiterate at the time thanks to the Raj .Therefore doctors and lawyers in India graduated from Calcutta Universities back in the day while other provinces did not have these facilities .People came from all parts of India to Kolkata ( Calcutta ) in order to receive education which the British had dried up in other provinces thus everything was available and connected through Calcutta and Calcutta alone .Eventually , one of the greatest sons of the soil , great Subhas Chandra Bose as well as great Rabindranath Tagore and the great Satyajit Ray ,all of whom were born in Calcutta and grew up there each played their indisputable and unmatched roles in shaping today' s India .

Nah this is taken during winter season. Temperature is not too cold but due to being a humid country it feels very cold. It can get up to 100% humidity. Temperature goes from 50f to 65f. But currently it's warming up a bit + global warming. Gabriel maybe used to it because he is from USA plus 65f in the day is nothing in USA.

After watching a couple of your Bangladeshi vlogs I started thinking either you don't know proper editing (I think I'm wrong about that), or you just want to show the ugly sides of the country as well. Just a piece of advice I happen to be a traveler and love to film a lot when I travel I try to portray the beauty of the place so that those who don't have the opportunity to travel they have a good understanding of the place. When you visit any place there are multiple ugly places you would find around, like downtown in NY, or poverty in Delaware, when I visited France I have witnessed the ugliest and most dirty train station, but I have never portrayed it to the others. I hope you will better film in future keeping this advice in mind, after all that's my country and I feel offended for picturing the ugliness. Thank you and take care!

Many misunderstood the fact that Bangladesh was once a part of India. But the fact is India was never an united country before the took over of the British Empire. The relics that you saw are the heritage of Independent Bengal. In the video you might have mentioned that these ruins belonging from Indian period which is incorrect. One contrast between Bangladesh and Pakistan, some places still have retained their old Hindu names in Bangladesh. Sonargaon = Village of Gold. SreeMangal is also a Hindu name. Gabe, can you cross the border from SreeMangal to Agartala. That way you can cover NE India first, and then visit Sikkim/Arunachal a month later, in time for springtime flower festivals.

Hello Mr. Gabriel, may I ask you, in your diverse travel life, how many other muslim countries did you visit? I'm asking this because in this video it seemed you still have some stereotypical ideas about muslims and muslim women. Unlike the middle-eastern counties, Bangladesh is not a religiously-strict country. Yes you'll see many burka-clad women here in Bangladesh, then again you'll find many women who don't wear burka, and women who wear traditional dresses too. And in India, it's called "Saaree", but since Bengali is different than Hindi, here in Bangladesh, we pronounce it "Shaaree" like the girls did in the video.

I've been to many Muslim majority countries. Bangladesh is the only Muslim country I've been to where the Muslim women wear saris. Maybe the only one? Or do they commonly wear them in India or Pakistan? There's a minority of Hindus in Bangladesh, so that's why I was wondering if they might have been Hindu.

You will always struggle to find a samosa in places such as this and it’s always going to be a curry with plain rice in most eateries. The only way you will know if they offer roti, is to go inside and have a look. Tough if you are a left hander, as it’s eat only with the bare right hand or don’t eat at all. A few words of Bengali and other languages spoken in Bangladesh would have helped you a lot, Gabriel. Agree or disagree, Gabriel?

The burqas can be very stylish too. It's an acquired taste and more modest compared to the Hindu sari which isn't that special.

whether wearing sari or burka it's up to the women and their family/partner. the ones wearing burqa usually very religious or have very religious partner family. unlike in arab world,other countries in with a predominantly muslim rpopulation still have choices how and what they want to wear. the social judgement is still there but they still have choices
