8:07 I said "internal" when I meant to say "external." To be clear, *external* synths piped into the Circuit Tracks hit a bit late compared to the Circuit's built-in synths.
@Michael-Black
@Michael-Black 2 жыл бұрын
Have you tested it to make sure it’s the Circuit’s fault? I think you’d need do the same comparison with another synth to be certain. I’d probably also do another test to see where the latency is if it persists. Just record the same sequence twice, once with the external synth audio coming back into the Circuit’s audio inputs and then another with the external synth going direct to your audio interface. If they are in sync when you run the individuals outs to your interface the latency is in the audio signal chain. If they are still out of sync it’s midi latency. May not be worth the hassle of testing though since the difference is so small. I’d just be careful about dinging the Circuit without absolute proof the latency is being introduced there.

Is there some fix for this latency issue? I have bass on synth1, pad on synth2 and microfreak on midi1. When microfreak is turned off then drums, synth1 and synth2 are in sync. When I turn on microfreak the latency can be noticed on the drums, especially on the first bit of the first drum pattern, practically on the beginning of the loop. It is heard like one drum step is played twice or similar.
@mkpatashnik
@mkpatashnik 2 жыл бұрын
I've found the reason for the issue I had. It was happening because I had both MIDI In and MIDI Out connected between Circuit Tracks and Microfreak. I've removed the cable coming from the Microfreak MIDI Out and going into Circuit Tracks MIDI In and now everything sounds in sync. Probably both Microfreak and Circuit Tracks were fighting to be master. Ouuu yeah! :)

Your channel introduced me to the Circuit tracks and I’ve found myself using it almost exclusively to control my synth setup. It definitely has its limitations, but i find the limits help my creativity. Parameters definitely help keep me focused. The key thing for me is the workflow. It’s the secret sauce to these devices. If they made a beefed up “pro” version with some quality of life improvements (undo button/function, larger sample times, stereo in/out, the ability to bounce down audio and allocate it to a scene) I would definitely be interested. The main issues I’ve had with these devices stem from the software side of things. It takes an age to transfer anything, the file management can be a pain due to the lack of a screen (the only element I would like a small screen for). In the future, I imagine something like this that links to a phone and allows Bluetooth connectivity, file transfer/import/export etc. something like a faster more intuitive version of components on mobile device platforms like iOS and Android would be awesome, purely for the file/preset management side of things. That said, both these devices are absolutely awesome and they have given me so much fun trying to work out their quirks. Thanks for all the work you put into this channel and keep up the awesome work.

My gripes re the Circuit Rhythm: 1) Limited note resolution (only 24ppq) 2) only one global swing (swing-per-track would've been better) 3) Only line-level inputs (a mic-level input and/or phantom power would've been amazing for field use) 4) Having to use the proprietary Components webware to compile/transfer samples (as opposed to just filling an SD card with wavs and picking them directly on the machine) 5) What's the lifespan of that non-removable internal battery?

For me the Tracks is a 10/10. Bought my Circuit Tracks more than a year ago (Thanks to Gabe) and have been thoroughly enjoying it. I've done around 40 tracks on it even though I don't really have a strong musical background. Tracks has easily the best interface coupled with a very portable design (I want jamming to be as easy and carefree as possible). Most of my time on it is spent jamming on a couch, but I've done also some live performances which can be enriched with external synths. Currently I have the Volca Bass connected to Tracks and it's still easy to carry the two and start jamming when ever and where ever. If you've ever wondered what that banger track from your childhood would sound like with an electronic wibe, then Tracks will let you do that. Remixing good tracks has been my favorite thing to do, and from time to time I get inspired to do some of my own.

It’s funny you posted this today. I just redid my studio around my Tracks as the new brain of my decent sized studio last night. I just kept resisting this since I have bigger and fancier and more complicated “brains” I could use but honestly the best stuff I make, stuff I don’t overthink and don’t disappear into menu diving while making is usually on the tracks. Also gabe just a quick note to add to your comments. The tracks one and two can be used to send to other gear as well just not processed inside

Great review video. I’m not leaving my Akai Force, but if it didn’t exist, I’ll use a Launchpad Pro mk3 and Circuit tracks. That pair would give you 8 customizable pages, 6 midi tracks, 2 synth tracks, 4 drum tracks, and the effects and chord mode, the ability to save 64 projects on each and recall at anytime. This duo pair up with some hardware synths and drum machines, you’ll have a very powerful setup! Great work!

I use my Rhythm as a drum machine and a beat chopper. It's really handy and I get a ton of mileage out of samples and phrases I put in. I do think it could've used a small display for keeping track of samples and packs. I can't remember everything I have in every pack I've made. I'm ready for an OS update. There's entire row of pads that could be used for additional grid effects, which I use all the time. Wish I could do time-stretch/pitch shifting. Wish that Components ran on Linux.

I really love the circuit tracks got it last year around this time for my birthday and only had a pocket operator before that. The tracks was kind of a gateway drug for me, and Since then I picked up a Roland JDXI, a minilogue, and recently the microfreak. The tracks works amazingly with all of those. But ... especially the JDXI. The JDXI is a special case because as you mentioned the idea of two grooveboxes together, well these work hand in hand through program switches if you want and you can easily do whole songs that way complete with FX and mixing. It's pretty amazing. I find the one thing that the tracks has but my other gear doesn't is note probability, and random pattern sequencing, microstepping, and even polyrhythm support for non standard beats per bar. You can do things like running 4 against 5 against 6 beats on it, and it takes it in stride. I find this really helpful for making crazy hi hat patterns or mixing in some extra flavor. Great video, Gabe, and thanks for getting me into this workflow. It's been transformative, I may never touch a DAW again.

Been a tracks owner for about 1 month now. I think your take covers just about all the essentials. And your past videos certainly helped push me in this direction! Tbh I really quickly ran into hard limitations from day one, especially with sample playback and "editing." Prepping my own samples in the DAW in length, volume, EQ, peak level, etc to make good-sounding music turned out to be much more laborous than working solely in the box. While sample-flipping brilliantly makes jungle/breakcore beats super easy to do on one drum track doing individual automation on the samples takes a bit of time and care. Even with the latest firmware update, I still run into voice-stealing; putting any amount of unison on one of my patches cuts polyphony to 3 for some reason. Not to mention, the synth engine is not serum or vital, even if it looks pretty slick. Still a large variety of sounds I can make, just not always like I would with plugins. But learning to work with the quirks, I find it to be probably the best compromise of two synths, a midi sequencer, a 4-track sample player, external (both hardware and software!!!) midi controller in a very easy to use UI. Like, there are other hardware pieces that excel better in certain aspects and a DAW is just inifinitely more powerful. But as a flexible centerpiece for connecting between old hardware, DAWs, and everything between, I can't really ask for more until you get to "DAW-in-a-box" gear like the Maschine or MPC One - but even then, those are quite different beasts.

At first, I wanted to get the Circuit Rhythm, but then Roland announced the SP-404 MkII, and I went with that. The sequencer on the SP-404 MkII isn't as good as the Circuit, but it can sample 16 minutes of audio PER PAD, which effectively turns it into a multitrack recorder as well as a killer sampler. I still might get the Rhythm later, as a way to have these two bounce off eachother though...

The Rhythm is a wonderful device for my way of making music by sequencing patterns with found sounds, sampling different instruments, cinematic foley and integrating that craziness into an MPC One workflow or song idea to later mix in Pro Tools. I can sequence and improvise patterns in the Rhythm as fast as my brain can come up with something.. and then chain all kinds of patterns and projects together live. Thanks to Gabe for the great tutorials of course. The quick workflow is brilliant and complementary to something as deep and screen-centric as the MPC One. I've found the limitations in it great to step out of my comfort zone. It's definitely niche but I hope many more folks start to find it as inspiring as I have, that way Novation can keep on updating it in the future for the niche that find the Rhythm great. Hopefully it doesn't become iterative like cellphones and every other year a new one comes out and the last one is obsolete, that's not great for a guy buying these machines in Colombian Pesos 😩 (But great for Novation of course) Still, future new version or not I'll keep this one forever

Foley is not cinematic friend. It's literally footsteps and doorknobs
@edgarcortes
@edgarcortes 2 жыл бұрын
@@ET2carbon You’re half right, the intended use of Foley, like recorded performances of footsteps and doorknobs, is primarily for use in sound design for film, tv, and it’s many derivatives. With that in mind cinematic foley or cinema foley in my field is short hand for excellent quality foley effect libraries or self recorded effects. My main profession is as a sound designer and mixer for film and TV for the last 15 years so I know this first hand. I make music with sequenced footsteps and doorknobs because I know a lot about it and it’s quite inspiring to create or layer organic recordings with electronic or live instruments. For example low passed door slams make great kicks, a constant struggle with a doorknob with a bit of dotted 8th delay might work as a percussion element, Pitch shifted footsteps can serve as a hi hats with a bit of swing etc.. the playground is infinite. A great example of Foley blending from film to percussion and big orchestration is Bjork’s Selmasongs from the film Dancer in the Dark. Anybody interested in downloading good startup libraries to experiment in music or good old sound design might want to Google GDC Soniss.
@ET2carbon
@ET2carbon 2 жыл бұрын
@@edgarcortes you're talking about sound design and sound effects or synthesis. Foley was the guy who Incorporated the acoustic and close mic pickup of objects that create sounds organically for later synchronization to video. The Circuit is incredibly flexible, capable and most of all fun to use. The big plus for performance is its ability to change project on the fly with no latency what so ever (that is, unfortunately, only if you're using the Circuit's internal memory and not an SD card) while making a seamless set. I still lament the loss of nudge, but the tracks has been a mostly worthy successor to my original circuit. Every new groovebox I try just doesn't do for me what the circuits do. That's actually kind of a shame because there's a lot that these other devices bring to the table. I've said it elsewhere, but there are two additions to the circuit line I would love to see: 1. Circuit Pro - This one feels oncious. A somewhat larger, more versatile; the mc-707 to the mc-101 or the tr-8s to the tr-6s. In particular I'd love individual outs, the full feature-set of the tracks and rhythm (nudge too pls). Audio interface, USB audio out/in, etc. Even if it's more of a studio tool, the workflow/philosophy behind the circuit line is worthy of it. Maybe toss in some generative/algorithmic features too. See the Polyend Play or Squarp Hapax for some circuit influenced takes that could feed back into the circuit 2. Circuit Effects - This one is probably more niche. I use the tracks often just as an effects processor for 4 desktop synths (muting the internal synths) to leverage the side chain, delay, reverb, etc. I did this with the rhythm too until I sold it. This would be that same idea but amped up. I'm torn on whether it should have the synth engine or sample playing, but if they leaned into the effects and had many different inputs and outputs with midi control for automating maybe 4-8 distinct digital effects (4 if we get synths/sample playing, 8 otherwise) that could be layered in a chain this would be amazing. Probably just toss in the audio interface capability here too. All these DAWless setups tend to suffer with effects. This would be basically an all-in-one "table of random pedals" replacement with MIDI automation.

I've been using the Rhythm for a year and it's probably the most inspiring tool I own for music. I do however feel the limitations of mono samples and short sample time. If they made a new Circuit Rhythm 'plus' with the only upgrades being stereo samples and way longer sample times, it would be an absolute beast. Literally only those two things hold it back from being amazing. Otherwise it's a fun tool for getting out some ideas.

I have paired my Tracks with a behringer TD-3 with really nice results. Way easier to try out different patterns, and the reverb and delay does magic to the saw on the td-3. The Td-3 is clunky in almost every aspect, but you can switch sync source super easy if you want to use it's internal sequencer. I have one midi channel on the tracks mapped to a korg Nts-1, wich gives me ready access to most of the Nts parameters, including the effects section. Awesome!

Love your Novation Circuits posts, Gabe. You were the main reason for me purchasing the Circuit Tracks one and it's the 'center' of my studio now. My main issue with the Tracks is recalling presets. I do a lot of live looping, and will just switch preset sounds until I find something I like. Problem is recalling that at a later point. Without any naming, LED screen, or some other way to find the preset/sound again, it's damn near impossible. Am I missing something here or have you run into the same issue? I love the workflow, but finding myself searching and searching to find the sound I used 15 minutes ago...

My Sound chain is TD 3 goes into Syntakt In and Syntakt goes into the Circuit Tracks. I very Happy with the Circuit Tracks it fits perfectly in my setup. you talk about the latency. But does the latency also occur when you do not feed external audio signal back in the Tracks, but have them parallel connected to mixer/audio interface? I have the hunch that midi isnt causing the latency, but the audio engine in the tracks handling the fx processing and sidechaining, does.

But I took some more time, worked through much of the manual and paired it with my BARP 2600 as a little keyboard and sequencer, running the audio back in just as a little headphone mixer and screwing around with the grid effects on it. Next of course I'll be sampling the 2600 and making tracks. And all this on my couch! (doesn't everyone have a 2600 next to their couch?) I loved my MPC2000 back in the day. Fully agreed on everything on the tracks. After 8 months with it I simply don't want to use a DAW, I love the workflow. I share the same concerns, the synths being underwhelming, but also I find the list of synths hard to manage, the previews are somehow poor and browsing sounds is confusing. I also hope they give us a software update any day with some quality of life improvements. Otherwise great device!

I feel like people hating on the circuit rythm want it to have all the bells and whistles a 800 or 900 dollar box would have and that's not the case.

The RS7K, a machine from 21 years ago, has a midi clock adjust knob right on the machine that allows intentional 'mistiming' of individual tracks, both internal and external, but it also has a midi timing clock adjust for latency so that it will send external midi adjusted for latency and then all notes are perfectly matched in time. It's really frustrating to see old gear constantly outshine newer gear in this way. Yeah, sure, new gear has bigger memory, they have more internal simultaneous effects, the synth engines sound cleaner, yada yada, but why are newer machines so bad at MIDI when compared to machines 2 decades older or more?

However, I wasn't 100% on board with the Microfreak, but bit the bullet because it had such good reviews. The built in packs fill every sound slot on both Circuits. You can definitely make full songs with either. The MC-101 has a better synth engine with very good presets. For any of the three devices, you can load in your own stuff, and loading in samples (drums, etc) is pretty easy.

Hey Gabe, did you try to look at the waveform of the recording, when looking at the delay issue, when you use a full analog external synth instead of a digital one? The delay you have observed might just be the latency of the ADC+DSP+DAC of the Korg digital synth, and not something related to the Circuit Tracks... Those hardware digital boxes work the same way our computers, the processing might have its own latency, and then you have the digital interface internal in to out + out to in latencies, and depending on the settings, it might add around 10-40 ms of audible delay, which can become very upsetting if you cascade several of them in a row... But in the case of a full analog audio path, you don't have this issue at all.
@GabeMillerMusic
@GabeMillerMusic 2 жыл бұрын
I've observed it on multiple synths, so I'm pretty sure it's a Circuit issue, but I'll try to double check with an analog synth whenever I get around to it.

I’m an owner of the Circuit Tracks and I think it’s the best Groovebox on its segment. There are 3 little aspects I would like an improvement: 1) Synth quality. It sounds good but not excellent, sometimes they sound a quite cheap and I cannot find a sound WOW. 2) Lack of an arpeggiator, it can be a very high improvement. 3) Updates: after an year Novation didn’t made any major software update including dedicated sound packages. Despite these point considering it’s price (400 €) and it’s high portability (you can make music literally everywhere) it’s impossible to find better. You don’t feel the need of a screen, so you can focus on music. The workflow is fluid, you can create different scenes for the song build up, there are automation on sound parameters and the “mutate” function is an incredible creativity trick to generate new musical ideas 😍

all your example sounds are just amazing lol I started music production a few years ago -- don't get this wrong, I am still absolutely beginner -- until I sumbled upon hardware synths. I got an electribe 2 and although I like it I think it slowed me down a little. I am considering selling all my hardware and keep only the microfreak and get a circuit instead of the E2. My current setup is the Electribe 2, Microfreak + NTS1 to complement it with effects, Volca Bass and Volca Modular. This setup for me is currently very unproductive, especially with the E2 as the brain, so maybe simplifying the whole thing and having the Circuit as the brain and the Microfreak, will make me get back to it? :)

@@benkey618 hey so I ended up not getting the tracks in the end I got an Elektron syntakt but I realize this is very out of budget especially for a beginner. I've watched so many videos about the circuit before making my mind I feel I properly learned how to use it even without having one, especially with the great content from this channel. I think you can go a very long way with it but it may take some learning how to use the hardware itself before learning how to make beats, it's probably still the best entry level choice out there. I started my journey with DAWs on my laptop too and some music production classes from udemy. You can use LMMS to get started it's decent enough for a free DAW but you will not record external audio etc but it's good to get started with scales chords and sequencing, if you decide to not get a circuit tracks instead.

Every time I use my circuit rhythm something makes me wish it had a display - even a small one. Sample management on it is a disaster, remembering which effects are where, etc. I end up using my OP-Z a lot more, even though I like the pads on the rhythm much more. The OP-Z feels like a complete music making device, while the Rhythm feels like an 'almost' device. I also have trouble getting used to only single voices - chords are a no go unless you sample them and then good luck remembering where they are on the pads. It's also a big boy. I can pack the OP-Z, and ipad, and a Keith Mcmillan Qunexus and in about the same amount of space, and I'm not worried about knobs getting wrecked like the Circuit. Pretty sure will be selling the rhythm in 2022. PS "the start button" issue you have is not ok - thats something you should have taken up with the manufacturer while it was still in warranty. That's waaaay to early for this device to be having issues with its buttons.

imo the biggest problem with the Circuit (og and tracks) is the synth engine. the wavetables are very tweakable in software, but the basic oscillator/filter sounds are pretty bad overall. I think it's time Novation break out of the budget segment and go head to head with Akai and Elektron: Rhythm's sampler, Peak's synth engine, with a workflow that can make whole songs. All this along with decent DAW export.

I bought both but sold my Rhythm. Their strength is the sequencer and the workflow it enables. Unfortunately the synths are seriously dated and the lack of a screen makes browsing patches stupidly impractical. These days, you can get seriously good sounds for a small budget. To make it worse, it isn’t possible to save any sound design (using macros) outside the project context, so once you have dialled in a sound you like, you can only reuse that if you copy the project. Surely, at least it should be possible to display the macro position (0-127} so you could take note of it? No USB audio out and no easy way to export your midi projects make these devices almost pointless as a sketch pad, unless you are prepared to manually re-code all your tracks and patterns one by one . The devices are also relatively expensive. For not much more, you can get an MPC One and that just blows away even a combination of the Tracks and Rhythm. I still have the Tracks, but I must admit I haven’t touched it for months. I may use it at some point as part of a live set, for some backing tracks… The Rhythm lasted 2 weeks for me. No time stretching, ridiculously clunky sample management and the same limitations of having no display basically makes this worthless. Now, if they would be sold for around 100€ each, they would be value for money as simple toys. The user interface has overall been very well designed - although it does really need a display - but the devices have so many flaws that I wonder what Novation’s strategy is. There are signs of good product design in parts, but the shortcomings just kill it. A real shame.
