The Solo de concert for bassoon and piano was commissioned by the Paris Conservatoire for their 1898 bassoon competition. It is in three sections - a dramatic opening section followed by a lyrical, cantabile middle section and concluding with a brilliant coda. A varied piece essential to the repertoire of aspiring bassoonists, it contains many characteristics typical of the French style, such as significant tempo changes and performance directions, flourishes of semiquavers, chromaticism and many alterations in dynamics.

Pierné does not have any bad chamber music. Wonderful performance, as well.

I also play bassoon, but really easy stuff. I would like to play like him one day.

This one is easier than it looks - it's more about expression than virtuosity (but you might need a good accompanyist at the piano). When auditioning for our university orchestra I chose this piece, while the competing player had prepared Weber's Bassoon Concerto. I won, although she was technically really good, but a bit soulless.

@@forlandmCongratulations!! I like this piece too. Not horrible note wise, but adding character is another step.

Man, that's some awkward piano writing (as in looks like it would be awkward to play). Very lovely piece though!

@@theycallmemilan Actually for bassoon not even that difficult compared to other pieces, great piece for beginners

@ I wouldn’t call it a beginner’s piece. Maybe upper intermediate. It’s true that it doesn’t involve any double tonguing, and there’s not a lot of 16 notes runs. Playing the notes is one thing. Which most beginners can’t do because it’s written in 3 different clefs, and it also goes up to D5. After that, the contrasting styles, rhythms and tempos need to be concentrated on. They’re very different, and they’re are some awkward bassoon parts in this. This piece really shows off what the bassoon can do. So I do highly recommend it. That’s awesome that you compose music☺️
