what is the history behind this piece. I cant find anything on it.

Nobody really knows. It's not even completely certain it's by Mozart (though I think it is; no other composer of the time could have written it). There is no autograph in his hand and it's not mentioned in his catalogue of works or his letters, but it appeared after his death in a published edition attributed to him. We know that he was commissioned by an amateur bassoonist, a Baron von Durnitz, to write a piano sonata (that he never paid for), so it's possible he may have also commissioned some bassoon works. Mozart mentioned writing other bassoon concertos beside the one existing one that we have, but these are unfortunately lost.
