Actually....you need to do that. Cockroaches are cannibalistic, so if you kill/smush one, it will attract more roaches to the area. Especially if you don't clean the area properly after killing it. There's a reason that it's a hard process to get rid of them! You have to kill them in a way that won't attract more to the property! ..... Source? I lived in some sketchy places in Vietnam. :((

02:34 YES there's a documentary about it! It's called Kowloon walled city . I just watched it, now I'm even more excited for this game. Can only recommend watching it. It's from a German journalist but it has English subtitles. They have footage from inside, like they got an actual tour through the city. It's just under 40 minutes, and it only has a couple hounded views which is surprising considering the subject matter

Just to be clear for those confused; the Kowloon Walled City no longer exists. Kowloon itself is still around. Just wanted to clarify that since I got confused when Gab only said "Kowloon" during her explanation. And to Gab's point; yes, Hong Kong speaks the Cantonese dialect. For those unsure, Cantonese is not the main dialect of China; it's Mandarin. I suppose a good comparison would be Spaniard and Mexican Spanish; the language is somewhat the same but different enough that things can't be understood. That's especially so for the Chinese language where pronunciation is key. With Mandarin as an example, the pronunciation for "horse" and "scold" are the same. The difference is tonal inflection on the syllables. Written out without the accent symbols; a common tongue twister for beginner Mandarin classes is "Mama ma ma"; translated as "Mom scolded the horse." Just a bit of random knowledge for everyone.
@howard2liu
@howard2liu Жыл бұрын
I think the comparison between Spanish in Mexico and Spain would be more apt for the dialects in Northern China, which often sound like Mandarin with different tones. But Cantonese is a southern dialect, and I feel the difference between Mandarin and Cantonese is further than, say, French and Italian, except that they mostly share the same written language. Someone who only speaks Mandarin will probably find Cantonese largely incomprehensible. Regarding simplified vs. traditional Chinese at 8:08 : The majority of characters (~70%, by some estimates) are the same in both traditional and simplified Chinese. Like, all 3 characters on the top of the box would be the same (and "water alcohol" is pretty much the right translation, I think). But the character on the front of the box would be different; I think it's actually showing the simplified character.
@ryuhoshikawa2214
@ryuhoshikawa2214 Жыл бұрын
@@howard2liu Exactly; the difference is definitely much greater. Perhaps Spain and Mexican Spanish was too light of an example for Cantonese and Mandarin. While the written language is quite similar for both; the Cantonese dialect is pretty much its own kind of language. More of a subset of Chinese, to be honest. There's a reason college, and some high school, classes only offer Mandarin; it's the official language of China. In terms of region, Cantonese is mainly spoken in the Hong Kong area; which is where the city of Kowloon is located. So one fluent in Mandarin would be linguistically lost in Hong Kong; the same goes for Hong Kong locals going to mainland China. For me personally, I'm what Asians call "ABC"; American-Born Chinese. While I understand Cantonese; I have difficultly speaking it. Like I would understand well enough what's said to me; I just most likely wouldn't know how to formulate a response in Cantonese. But with Mandarin, I'm beyond lost!
@maddieb.4282
@maddieb.4282 Жыл бұрын
People in Spain and Mexico can 100000% understand each other lol. Maybe you’re thinking of Spanish and Catalan. Those are two dialects spoken in the same country where one is a minority and the languages overlap some but there are large differences to the point where a Spanish speaker would not automatically be able to understand Catalan.
@ryuhoshikawa2214
@ryuhoshikawa2214 Жыл бұрын
@@maddieb.4282 Probably. I know there are certain regions where Spanish is spoken where people can't understand each other; at least not fully without confusion. Thanks for the clarification. I based my comment on what high schoolers are being taught in terms of Spanish classes. They concentrate on the region of Spain; so I just assumed there was a large enough difference between Spain and Mexico. My fault there.
@Rebsson
@Rebsson Жыл бұрын
@@ryuhoshikawa2214As a Spanish speaker myself. We can understand all forms of Spanish, some with a little more difficulty if the person use a lot of regional terms (like Chilean Spanish, it’s considered very difficult), but with a little context we can eventually understand them all. The best comparison with Mandarin and Cantonese would be like Spanish speakers trying to understand French, Portuguese, Italian or Catalan.

There are multiple documentaries about Kowloon. But a quick synopsis of it. It was originally an old Chinese military outpost. When the British took over Hong Kong they also got the surrounding lands that included the land around the outpost but not the outpost itself. As such the land technically belong to China but Chinese forces either could not or would not police this land since they would need to pass through British territory to do so. As such is became a haven for those trying to escape China's government whether for political or lawful reasons.

I lived /with/ a drug dealer once in college. In an apartment complex where every bedroom had it's own lease (as opposed to the whole apt sharing a lease) and you got paired with 3 other random people. The guy was aggressive, stole stuff from me, threatened and sxually harassed my boyfriend, and constantly gave out copies of the front door key so people could let themselves in to pick up drugs!! I had to get out of there pretty quickly. And despite me reporting the problems to management in order to be moved to another apartment, the management still made me pay a FEE to be moved. I was dumb, scared 19-year-old so I just scrounged up the money and was pissed, but frankly I should have fought that.

Hong Konger here, a bit more background info to add on what Gab said: Gab pointed out that they should be speaking Cantonese and using traditional Chinese as they are in Hong Kong. Yes, that's true. There are simplified Chinese characters in there which may not be accurate. Locally, Kowloon Walled City has always been regarded as a hotbed for crime, due to its ambiguous status of not falling under the jurisdictions of either Britain, HK, or China. The government has always regarded the Walled City as a unhygienic place and the postcolonial government teared it down to fit the narrative of HK being better as it is returned to the motherland. For some of us, the interest from other countries in Kowloon Walled City can be somewhat baffling. It is pretty aesthetically in a cyber-punk way, but for HKers, it is also a reminder of poor living conditions in this densely populated city. In fact, you may find a similar style of such claustrophobic places in the subdivided flats today, which exist due to the sky-high rents. The spiritual successor to Kowloon Walled City is "Monster House" on the HK Island near Quarry Bay. It has become a tourist spot and gradually gentrified. Nevertheless, I am happy to see Gab bringing more attention to our little city and culture. I hope she plays more games based on HK in the future!

With the images I found, I can see what you mean with the construction: I saw one image where it was an alleyway with a mess of wires and pipes going in all random directions. It is both terrifying and impressive that people lived there as long as they did. I imagine, if not demolished, it would likely still be standing today as another abandoned city.

Someone in Jack's video commented on a brief story of the place when he played but I didn't think to look it up. The whole time I kept thinking "This reminds me so much of Stray." and I thought maybe a lot of places in China looked similar. But it wasn't until you mentioned looking up the photos that I really saw how unique and actually terrifying it was. Then realized it does make a lot of sense that Stray based the city on it since it was basically the same. Walled city, impoverished/outcast citizens all piled together one on top of another. In the game they were machines so even if you felt bad it wasn't as horrible as they could just adapt and survive. But seeing how it really existed it's actually very sad people HAD to live in such a place and have such a horrible story attached to it. Definitively will look for some documentary or youtube video about it after this.

this whole video is like just the reasons I love watching Gab's playthroughs of things, condensed: the humor, the being fascinated by the story behind the thing, wholesomeness, cooing over cute animals, and even educating us? like I've watched two other people play this game but I learned more from Gab's and also enjoyed her playing it more! and like with many of her horror vids I appreciate that there are scares that clearly effect her and then there are scares that maybe don't quite land for her but she gives us a laugh instead, instead of just pretending to be scared by it. also always love the mix on this channel of horror and cozy games. nice to have reprieves now and again. thank you, evelien, you're a joy to watch ❤

wasn't kowloon titled as a city within a city? when i first saw it, it gave such a claustrophobic feel and it totally gave you a scare, as if you may come in, but also never come out (really perfect for horror games, but i'm sure many horrible things did happen within the walls of kowloon). lawless is obviously because who had the ability to regulate it, after all even the internal mapping of the houses would give a headache to anyone. after i started reading chinese novels it sometimes mentioned the poor and cheap housing, basically what you see is the ultimate bottom with so many potential hazards. I bet all those leaking pipes saved this place from fire hazards. but before their economy turned for the better and people started to get resettled from places like these, i'm sure this was an actual picture. but the contrast between before and after to me is great.

Now, I was going to comment this on your little short about recorring nightmares, but since the opportunity presented itself: While I don't usually dream, when I do, most of the time it's about me being lost in some distorted, labyrinthic shopping malls, and they also happen to be my favorite kind of dream, so I guess I really like closed spaces with confusing navigation. I don't know if it's because this was my second time seeing the game or what, but your energy through this was so calming and chill! And I loved learning the history of Kowloon. It didn't even occur to me to look up if it was a real place.

Ooh, Kowloon! I first learned about Kowloon through the manga Kowloon Generic Romance (which is a great manga by the way) and have been fascinated with the city ever since. I'm surprised there aren't more things using the concept of Kowloon in stories.

This game is claustrophobicaly depressingly horrific. I shudder to think what kind of smell this place all the time. And you can't escape it.

In my nightmares when I need to hide from someone chasing me, the doors are actually like that. It just swings both ways or the gap between the door and the wall is too big. It can't be locked. Even if it somehow locks, it still opens when the person gets there. Doors never work in my dreams :')

It's the same setting based off on HK Paranormal, which you played a while back! The Kowloon Walled City was first founded as military barracks for a fort in the vicinity, before squatters moving in from China into Hong Kong began turning the compound into a residential enclave. While much of Hong Kong and the New Territories were leased to the British after, the Walled City was not included in the agreement and became one of the remaining pockets of Mainland Chinese influence there. As the British government had no legal jurdistriction, and the Mainland Chinese government didn't seem to care much for the Walled City, it eventually became a lawless land until it's eventual demolishment. Kowloon itself, as a district, still remains.

There needs to a law that demands that if your game has a dog, you need to include a pet option. Or you just go straight to jail.

I said this on Sean's video, but the beginning alleyways reminds me of Stray. Someone said under my comment that it's because Stray was also inspired by Kowloon, or at least the setting was.

I have the "official" book of Kowloon Walled City called "City of Darkness". It goes into detail about anything and everything with pictures and interviews etc of what went down in that place. I can HIGHLY recommend it to anyone who is intrigued by stuff like this. The book truly is a work of art 🙂 If the book is not in stock on the website, just wait, it'll most likely be in stock again in some time!

this game is visually amazing, but I hate how dependent it is on jump scares. the environment does such a wonderful job creating tension by itself, it doesn't need to constantly have it broken by jump scares every 5 minutes
