Gaby Bultmann demonstrates the Gemshorn

Instruments made from animal horn have been around for a very long time, with the first association often being the signal horn and the Vikings. To create these instruments, one simply cuts off the tip of the horn, turning the instrument into a brass instrument in terms of its mouthpiece. Alternatively, one can insert a mouthpiece with a wind channel and labium into the wider end, drill finger holes, and voila, the gemshorn flute is ready! In literature, these instruments are primarily described in the first half of the 16th century, and later on, they were mainly known as a particularly gentle organ register. Renaissance sources mention 4 finger holes for the gemshorn flute - Dürer also depicted it this way. However, the gemshorn in the museum has more finger holes, and unfortunately, the age of the instrument is not currently known. Nowadays, the instrument is being reconstructed, usually with 8 finger holes and no longer made from the horns of the now protected chamois, but from the horns of cows, bulls, goats, or even an African springbok (not "Steinbock") like the small black flute in the video. Gaby Bultmann owns instruments in all sizes from sopranino to contrabass. Her Renaissance music ensemble, "Cöllner Compagney," uses these instruments in concerts, and her students at the Leo Kestenberg Music School play in the "First Berlin Gemshorn Orchestra"!

Instrumente aus Tierhorn gibt es schon sehr sehr lange, als erstes fällt einem dann immer das Signalhorn und die Wikinger ein. Hier schneidet man einfach die Hornspitze ab, das Instrument wird vom Ansatz her zum Blechblasinstrument. Man kann aber auch in das breite Ende ein Mundstück mit Windkanal und Labium einsetzen, Grifflöcher bohren, fertig ist die Gemshornflöte! In der Literatur werden diese Instrumente vor allem in der ersten Hälfte des 16. Jahrhunderts beschrieben, später gab es sie lange Zeit nur noch als besonders sanftes Orgelregister. Die Quellen der Renaissance sprechen von 4 Grifflöchern bei der Gemshornflöte - auch Dürer hat sie so gezeichnet. Das Gemshorn im Museum hat aber mehr Grifflöcher, leider ist das Alter des Instruments (noch) nicht bekannt. Heutzutage baut man das Instrument wieder, meist mit 8 Grifflöchern und natürlich nicht mehr aus dem Horn der inzwischen geschützten Gemsen, sondern aus den Hörnern von Kühen und Stieren, Ziegen oder auch mal einem afrikanischen Springbock (nicht Steinbock) wie die kleine schwarze Flöte im Video. Gaby Bultmann besitzt die Instrumente in allen Größen von Sopranino bis Kontrabass, ihr Renaissancemusikensemble "Cöllner Compagney" benutzt diese bei Konzerten und ihre Schüler an der Leo Kestenberg Musikschule spielen im "Ersten Berliner Gemshornorchester"!
