Your solution symbolizes the ideal of a do-it-yourself way around the formal structures of 'the world.' Thank you for having the kindness to put this video on KZbin.

I want to thank you for telling us about this quirk. I got a magnet we used to hold cards on our refrigerator. It's pretty strong, but the needle only moved about 1/4 of the way to unpeg it. Later, found if I moved the magnet above the gauge, the needle would mysteriously follow the magnet. Continuing to move it clockwise, it pulled the neddle, so it rested on the peg! My obvious approach, to keep the magnet close to the needle was not enough; I had to move the magnet to the top of the gauge. Thank you for taking time to make this video.

I changed the oil last week and then noticed that I was not getting any pressure indication. I thought I'd have to, at least, replace the sensor. I was looking on KZbin last night and found your video. I was skeptical, but I decided to try it. I had to purchase a strong magnet, but it really did work! Thanks for posting this!

Wow! I used one of those round magnets on a shaft that you use to pick up nails at a construction site. I put the magnet over the needle of the oil gauge and just rotated clockwise and the needle followed. GREAT TRICK! If this had not worked, I was going to take down a magnetic bar that I use for holding tools, but this round magnet worked perfect. Thanks for posting and thanks KZbin for helping out once again.

I am absolutely shocked but that worked so easily. Thank you so much for posting this, that was a much easier fix than pulling the cluster. I found that rotating the pointer with the magnet near the tip of the pointer was the easiest way. I had a pretty strong earth magnet about the size of my thumb and it worked very well. My 2001 explorer had the same problem while on the interstate 2 weeks ago and it has driven me crazy. Tomorrow was the day that I was going to pull the cluster or drill a hole in the plastic to get a hook in there. I really appreciate the time that you just saved me with the tip.

Thanks for watching. I have pulled my cluster out before, not to fix this but to replace some dash bulbs, so I new it was not an easy process. It has been a year and it has not happened again. Thanks.

Here’s a tip. Those oil pressure gauges in Ford Rangers are called “dummy gauges”. They don’t actually show an AMOUNT of oil pressure. They only show that you have SOME oil pressure and the sending unit in the block will activate the gauge with as little as 6 or 7 pounds of oil pressure. So wether you have 6 pounds of pressure or 50 pounds, the needle will be in the same place. I highly recommend you get a real oil gauge installed. A real oil gauge has a tiny line that goes from the engine block all the way to the gauge. This tiny line will have oil in it. It will show you your ACTUAL oil pressure. You can buy one of these gauges at any auto parts house and they are fairly easy to install. They cost about $20.00. My oil gauge showed I had pressure and the needle was about in the middle. But once I installed the real oil gauge I discovered my oil pressure was only about 10 pounds and sometimes a little less. This let me know I had a problem. I cleaned the sludge out of the oil pan and now I have 50 pounds of oil pressure. I’m lucky I didn’t blow my engine.
@Gadgetman1538
@Gadgetman1538 4 жыл бұрын
I suspected that while looking at the schematic. I figured it was really an idiot light disguised as a gauge. This is my work truck and has over 240,000 miles so probably not going to spend extra on it. It just bugged me that the pressure gauge wasn't working properly. When I bought this truck it had 49,000 miles and I have had the oil analyzed by Blackstone labs at every oil change. I have been impressed with the lack of wear on this engine. Thanks for your input. I appreciate it.

I just had this happen on my way home from work. Well, I mean I just notice this on my way home that the needle was low. I was freaking out because years ago my engine seized up because of no oil, synchronizer went out and my brother thought it was just low, so he kept adding more oil. He didn’t call me until it started knocking. So with that being said, I was having flashbacks lol got home and notice it was under the peg. I thought they only way to get to this was to take the dash apart and fix it. Came across this video and it took me a minute and a half and I have it fixed. Thanks so much!!

I had the very same problem. Auto repair place quoted $700 because they would have to remove the panel and send it to a certified repair place. They said it had something to do with the odometer. I used the 25 pound telescoping magnet from Harbor Freight that I already had. I took me longer to disassemble the magnet from the pole then to fix this issue using this method. Be sure to put the magnet behind the needle and push it and twist the magnet as you go around. It took 20 seconds to swing the needle around and tested it successfully.

For those that see this later I couldn`t find a suitable magnet so drilled a very small hole above the center of the needle hub and then gently took the next size smaller drill bit and went thru the drill hole and gently touched the needle hub and spun it clockwise [ the needle spins so very easily ] it dropped back in place as soon as it comes back over the gauge area . It now works just fine and continues to work , and it took under 2 minutes for whole procedure.

My 98 did that before, the first time I took the cluster out to fix it, second time I was too lazy to do it again. I thought about the magnet but I wasn't sure if it was gonna work, so I drilled a 1/16" hole where the center of the needle is and turned it back with a piece of wire, then put a piece of clear tape over the hole. If it happens again I'm trying the magnet since you showed us that it actually works..

Glad to know it worked for you. I had taken the dash apart for another issue and didn't want to have to do it again. I was skeptical that it had a chance of working because my first thought was that the needle was made of plastic and would not work. Tried it anyway and it worked. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for watching. Since I made this video 4 years ago my Ranger did this again about a month ago. I flipped it back around in 20 seconds. So stick around, you may still get to do it. Thanks.

@@Gadgetman1538 I have bought a small round magnet that will pickup a hundred pounds. I am still having the flipping needle. I just replace the oil sensor. Hopefully that may fix the bouncing needle.

You can also pull the dash cover off and get a long flat head or something long on the bottom of the cluster to the right there’s a small opening you might have to take the cluster bolts off but I was able to do like that that if you don’t have a magnet

Small drill bit and a paper clip works as well if you don't mind a small hole in your cluster.

If this didn’t worked I also thought about drilling a hole to flip the needle. Thanks.

I could see how that could happen to anyone. There should be a stopper at the high side of the gauge, because the way the gauge flips up when you start the truck could make it flop around.
