Audeze LCD-X Review - Punching Above Its Weight!

Would love some kind of comparison between the LCD GX and Maxwell.

I can't compare to the GX but I have the LCD-2C, which is similar to the GX, just a bit darker sound (i prefer that). Have had the Maxwell, it's pretty good for a gaming headset, but damn, there's no comparison between them. The 2C feels like it's pouring honey down your ears, no sharpness, no shoutiness, just pure, sweet, smooth yet defined audio massaging your eardrums. It can be a bit overwhelming in games, but i want exactly that! I mostly play story driven games, and I feel it adds to the immersion. The Maxwell felt hollow, perhaps even soulless in comparison. Is it still the best wireless, heck, even gaming headset overall? Probably yes, by a huge margin, at least audio wise. The hype is real, and justified. My suggestion is to get both the GX and the Maxwell if you can afford it and return the one you didn't like. Things can be pretty subjective, comfort (2C is 544g, GX 454g, neck workout for sure, but the memory foam pads feel like little clouds around your ears, especially when you just put them on and they're cold, best feeling ever), sound signature(the crispness and analytical representation of the Maxwells might appeal more to some), having to spend extra on a nice amp for the GX, all things that only you can decide upon. For the LCD GX vs the LCD X 2021, I think theyre fairly similar headphones. Although the GX is more darker and provide a much warmer sound, similar to like a 6xx, but with the LCD X 2021 the sound is much more neutral so you can pick out better detail without it getting siblant My problem with the GX and why I traded it in for a LCD X 2021 was comfort. Audeze's old style of clamp used to be entirely based on the rear part of the pillowy pads, aka the back of your jaw, and that needed to be tight otherwise the headphone falls off your head (its already prety insecure to begin with). These headphones would legitimately hurt after an hour and I would be less and less likely to reach for them just because of that alone. The LCD X 2021 has no such problem, the clamp is normal and distributed front and rear, and is significantly more secure on the head. If I shake my head rapidly could they still off? If I do it hard, yes lol. But for the GX something as dumb as picking something up off the floor could have them coming off, not a great design. I tried their new MM 500 at CanJam style of headband, and thats even more secure than the LCD X 2021, but it comes at the cost of the clamp force being very very tight (thankfully still evenly distributed). The LCD X 2021 gets the best middle ground imo

Excellent review, I happen to own both the Arya Stealth and the LCD-X 2021 edition. The LCD-X is by far the most enjoyable one for almost everything especially after applying Andrew's (aka Resolve) EQ it's absolutely phenomenal! I'm getting my hands on the HD660S2 during the next week and I can't wait to start comparing.

@@anatol1204 Τα προτιμώ γιατί είναι καλύτερα σε όλα τα σημεία , από τα μπάσα που είναι πιο ισχυρά,γεμάτα και με καλύτερη υφή μέχρι τα ψηλά που είναι πιο smooth αλλά ταυτόχρονα με αρκετό αέρα χωρίς να θυσιάζει το soundstage. Γενικά μιλώντας είναι πιο διασκεδαστικά χωρίς να χάνουν το midrange για το οποίο φημίζονται. Ανάλυση λεπτομέρεια είναι επίσης καλύτερη σε σχέση με τα 660. Ιδίως αν εφαρμοστεί το προφίλ EQ που πρόσφατα έκανε ο Resolve , ο ήχος γίνεται πιο καθαρός και ισορροπημένος. Πόσα χρήματα διαθέτεις ;

@@giorgosapo4508 είμαι σκεπτικός στο πόσα να διαθέσω να σου πω την αλήθεια μπορώ να φτάσω μέχρι 2000 αλλά δεν ξέρω αν αξίζει τον κόπο για αυτό σκεφτόμουν μέχρι 700..Στα 2000 ξεκινανε και τα καλά μόνιτορ για αυτό μου φαίνονταν πολλά για ακουστικά αν και δεν έχω ακούσει ακουστικά από τέτοια κατηγορία τιμής..Με τα DT 880 που έχω όταν αρχίζω και προσθέτω οργανα ειδικά ορχήστρες κτλ αρχίζουν να μπλέκουν οι ήχοι και τα reverb και με κουράζουν..Το άλλο θέμα είναι ότι άντε και τα πήρες έχουν πάλι μειονεκτήματα ..άλλο είναι βαρύ ,(audeze) αλλά θέλουν καλούς προενισχυτες,το hd 800 λένε ότι χει σκληρα ψηλά είναι μπερδέματακι καλό..

Great review. I have the 2020 version of that headphone. I wish you would have given a little bit more of a gaming perspective on the headphone and the fact that you can use Audeze’s microphone cable from the LCD-GX line as a good gaming set up. Would have really liked a mic test with that set up. Any way keep up the great work!

I greatly appreciate the feedback! I did look back once the edit was done and I wasn't sure why I left pretty much any game discussion out of it. It's perfectly fine for gaming, but I wouldn't say it's worth it over less expensive dynamic open backs, purely for gaming. That's mainly with regards to FPS. Otherwise, the immersion and richness the LCD-X offers would be great for games like Cyberpunk, God of War, etc.

Great review! I have the 2021 LCD-X. It’s a great headphone. Prior to that I was using the 6XX and 4XX which I like but always fealt something was missing. That’s not the case with the LCD-X. It’s a bit heavy, but I’m used to it. I primarily listen to it via an ifi zen DAC v2 and when I’m away from my desk my Topping NX4 and Earmen Eagle get a he job done. It’s an expensive piece but worth it IMO.

Hello, I just want to use one earphone and don't want to be tired of switching devices all the time depending on the type of music. I listen to 80% classical and 20% jazz and pop. I I think I like mm500 very much, and I think the instrument part is quite good, and the vocals are in the front, so the female voice sounds good. Do you recommend other headphones at this level? I think the Sound Stage of the mm500 is ok. For classical music, the instrument is not too modified and artificial, the low-frequency dive is enough for jazz. I'm still looking for a sound I like, maybe you can give me some advice or other information.

Custom EQ on PS5 makes it a challenge but I'm working on figuring out what's best outside of the normal "gaming DACs" out there. Potentially the new Creative X5 but I'm still testing it right now.

Current Hifi man Sundara owner here, I use mine with ifi Zen DAC V2 with a balaced 4.4mm cable. Would these be a significant upgrade over my Sundaras?

Little late, but they're a big upgrade in every way other than raw sounstage width. Much fuller tuning, better bass, better controlled treble. They're very worth the upgrade (I personally went from Sundara to LCD-X). The only other thing I'd think about if you like your Sundaras, is upgrading to another hifiman. An Arya Organic or HE1000 is even more competent than the LCD-X, with pretty different tuning philosophies to boot, so you've got some choices.

They are awesome. I picked them over Focal clear, LCD5, MM500 and any sennheiser (no shade) Im a mastering and mixing guy, LCDX strike the balance of sounding normal-natural-warm with good detail and good ammount of slam. LCD5 sounds like a 6,3 cable straight into the brain - weirdly clean, not really much soul in the sound, but grade A accurate. MM500 sounded weird and slight harsh Focal clear sounded like good speakers in a room, slamm, but I buy headphones for the EXTRA detail retrieval, not the same as speakers. Sennheiser hd650 a bit like focal clears but more beautiful airy highs and less slam, it sounds amazing, but not very detailed like lcdx

One of the most “neutral” review of these headphones. Because you said the most important part, different headphones, like speakers, are for different purposes. You want just to enjoy music or do you want to analyze a mix. I was curious and I tested them, but they’re too dark for mixing/mastering (unless you’re gonna use an eq to boost high frequencies)

@@GadgetryTech OH yeah, few days ago I tried in a store the Meze 109 Pro along with LCD-X. The Meze are awesome considering they are almost half price compared to LCD-X. They come close to them. Of course LCD-X are a totally different beast in the low to mid low frequencies. Right now my set up consist of a pair of DT1770Pro and K702 both paired with Sonarworks for mixing when I'm bored of my speakers 😄 DT1770s are also good for listening music without correction. These Meze are on my list when it will come the time for upgrade 😎

It's interesting these don't need that much power.I bought the Hifiman xs edition just for gameing on ps5, using ifi zen dac v2 pro amp.Very disappointed in sound for gameing,but when I tried a blu ray live music through console they sounded fantastic.Gutted I had to return them.Hopefully the Maxwell will be a worthy contender.

Good luck gaming in those for longer than an hour lol. My LCD 4 is even more heavy and I gave up gaming in those after about 10 minutes. I use the 800S for gaming and that's probably the best it gets for gaming.

I mean that’s all subjective. I game in my 2020 LCD-X’s for many hours at a time with no issues. They are heavy but the weight is evenly distributed enough for me.

I've gamed on the LCD-X for hours and have been fine, so I think it depends on the person. Regardless, the LCD-4 and 800S are a hell of a pairing! That's end game material!

Not that I could ever afford these headphones, I'm just here cause I've been watching Epos H6PRO Open back reviews all day making the choice haha, so thanks for that, and I hope this video helps someone who is in this price range for a pair of headphones! I'm just really happy to hear they come with a choice of Leather or Leatherette because as a vegan this is a top priority question, even with the H6PRO I had to look everywhere to find the materials and only amazon had the materials listed not even the Epos website had it. and I know expensive headsets just put real leather because it's seen as a more premium material, but vegans can be audiophiles too hahaha.

Notice how 90 percent of ALL headphones (expensive or cheap) always have that weakly made spot right at the connection between the actual headphones that cup over your ears and the top part that goes on your head. That side thin wire is always the first to break so that you have to buy another headphone within a year. That shows that humanity is hundreds of years away from doing anything right when it comes to a lot of things. Future electronics will be so much better than today. LOL.
