Love that you're getting into high end audio! I love my Focal Clears, and look forward to you comparing the two. I've managed to spend a bunch time with some high end phones, Heddphone, Arya, HE1000SE, Ether2, (played through an RME Adi2Pro with it's lovely HP amp and fantastic 5 band parametric EQ) etc. The the Aryas were my out right favourites, with a tight low end slam which none of the other phones could manage, I'm a techno head. Didn't feel like dropping that much cash, so picked up a pair of Anandas instead, no bueno. There's an Arya somewhere out there with my name on it. Love your videos, so really looking forward to watching some killer phone reviews done in your style! PS - You might end up liking the Aryas better than the LCDx

Hey BadSeed, great review. I'm actually waiting for these exact cans to come in the mail. One thing I did want to mention - Audeze actually taped the pads on to preserve the lower bass frequencies. Earpads have the biggest impact on bass response and by doing this they preserve a lot of the bass. But I agree, it's definitely inconvenient as hell!

I’ve got the new version of LCD-XC and they are an excellent closed back. Definitely heavy though. Good for shorter hour sessions over an all day use. You’ll definitely feel them eventually
@jackka82
@jackka82 3 жыл бұрын
Do closed backs generally sacrifice a bit of soundstage for more feelable bass compared to openbacks? I'd love to know the difference between the XC and the X.
@dasninjastix
@dasninjastix 3 жыл бұрын
@@jackka82 In general open-backs will give you a greater sense of space at the cost of sound leakage/interference. That isn't always the case, Dan Clark closed back headphones for example tend to sound a lot less claustrophobic than other closed backs. In general it comes down to use case FIRST. Do you need to be isolated from your environment or do you have a consistently quiet listening area? If you need isolation then that's where you shop something closed off. Otherwise you may enjoy the space, tuning, timbre, and range of a good open back. You don't have to spend LCD-X money though. You can start with something like a Sundara or Ananda first (both have 2021 revisions btw) and go from there.
@jackka82
@jackka82 3 жыл бұрын
@@dasninjastix Is there no general difference or tendencies in bass between open-back and closed-back? I don't particularly need isolation but wondering if there are any other sonic characteristics or advantages to closed backs
@dasninjastix
@dasninjastix 3 жыл бұрын
@@jackka82 Sure, you're likely to get more bass with closed backs but that doesn't mean that quantity = quality. I don't engineer headphones but the lack of really detailed, controlled, and tonally accurately closed back headphones in comparison to open ones in the like.. 200 to 1000 dollar price range leads me to believe that it's harder to achieve tonal balance with closed headphones than open ones. To the point I tend to recommend IEMs over headphones up till about that 1k price tag. I don't think any general description I could provide would properly convey what a really good balanced open back headphones offers in terms of things like bass texture, space and air, resolved mids, and airy highs. That's a lot of flowery language that say "it's pretty good, clear, and clean". If bass is the concern you may want to go with a dynamic over a Planar or get comfortable with EQ or buy an amp or DAC with a bass filter like the Zen DAC/Can. I would recommend consensus open backs to start, things the audiophile community tends to love for price to performance like the 58x or the 6xx or the HD 600s or the Sundara if you want flavors of neutral.

I own both the LCD-2 (2020) and the LCD-X (2021) and while they are indeed on the heavy side they have never been so terrible as to cause me any real discomfort. I do, however, have a bit of a workaround for those who do. What I've done is to make myself a leather headband with a couple of fairly large metal rings stitched, one on each side. I have attached 10 foot chains to my headband and I connect them to an old broken down washing machine in the garage. I like to take the old machine out for a good walk around the block a couple of times weekly in order to keep the neck muscles strong and up to the task so that a nice 8-10 hour marathon listening session never becomes a problem. It works great!

Tire right that it sounded fuller. I have an LCD-X among many other headphones. Planars require current more than power, meaning that with the LCD-X to get the most out of it I would put my A90 on High again while adjusting the volume accordingly. It’s not just about loudness when it comes to planars. The reason why the balanced sounded fuller to you is because it provided more current to the headphones.

Getting your hands on them can be a very slow process, but they're not that expensive and they definitely deserve a place in any headphone enthusiast's collection.

That's a tough call and it all comes down to budget. But I guess the best way to say it, is that I get more different uses and more comfortable usage time out of the 1990. Like I do literally almost everything in those. I'm experimenting with mixing in the LCD-X (this video was the first one). If you're *really* in to music listening - like you take time out of your day to do just that - then yes, these are worth it. For gaming - nah. Gaming has a really low ROI on high-end cans. Hell one could even argue that the 1990 are overkill for gaming. Not sure if that helps or hurts lol
@PantsaBear
@PantsaBear 3 жыл бұрын
@@badseedtech When you say gaming, do you mean first person shooters? Sorry I just get really confused in your reviews when you use that term, then don't really describe what genres are tested. I understand fps needing good imaging and hearing footsteps, but in single player games the music and dialogue is a huge factor (much like movies). Obviously game music is also extremely varied as well, just would like to know what you tried, if you did try them on any single player games. Changing from my Arctis 7 to an AKG K712 with Schiit Hel2 has made rpgs like 20% more engaging and emotional for me, so I'm sure there are others curious for that insight as well and what other options there are for that use case. Most reviewers dont cover that so we need to buy expensive setups to try it ourselves. Anyway, great review!

If you think the LCD-X is heavy you should try the Sennheiser HD 800 S. Perfect weight for long sessions and also very good sounding headphones.

Although sound-wise they're a very different headphone compared to the LCD-X.

Bad seed can you do a video on how to tune headphones. Was a pain in the ass finding the software I needed there’s a ton of videos out there’s about eqing music etc that come up first in results. I’ve been using peace on my sundaras and it’s honestly amazing what a little eq can do. I’ve only been using the presets and they seem do pretty well, but I’m sure there’s better software out there and probably some tips and tricks you could share.

Awesome headphone but that weight can be a killer for long sessions. The LCD GX is a lighter version of the LCD lineup but not as technically proficient.

I will loan you my Arya if you want a comparison... Main reason? For Arya? Lcd2f too heavy. Great cans, just heavy heavy. Arya def needs power though

Awesome review as usual!!! 7:51 Please do it ! I'm saving money for years to upgrade my hd58x to Focal Clear (now MG) or Arya or LCD-X. Right now Focal would be my choice but their QC issues scares me, LCD-X weight is problematic as i use my cans +8hours/day and Arya maybe lack bass, not sure. I can't test them anywere near my city. Help me BT!
@TOM7952
@TOM7952 3 жыл бұрын
Buy the OG Clear while you still can for $990. Huge savings and most people prefer the OG Clear over the MG. Hifiman and Focal both have pretty bad QC issues so that's something to be aware of. Personally I would go for the Arya but they're the most expensive and arguably the riskiest for QC. (I own Clears and a number of other headphones).

I've thought about the Audeze line before but they developed a mixed reputation for quality and poor decisions in the community and I just couldn't justify the purchase. Also, stuff like being unable to do a pad swap is what keeps me away. On top of that I have neck issues and they are just too heavy for me to consider. I use the HD800s and the Sundara's which are weighty but over 230g difference than the LCD-X. Also, HIFI Man has a similar reputation but I really like the 2020 Sundara for the price and Josh as well as others have reviewed them really well for their price, I think you'd really like them too.

No. DT990 is just a treble cannon, and the TYGR is better. The HD58X isn't necessary anymore with the HD560S and HD6XX being around.
