Sometimes I'm not even interested in a particular headset being reviewed but the absolute genuine honesty that is in every one of these reviews just makes me feel good about clicking "play" and learning something new. Been using the Astro A50 Gen5 for 3 weeks now. Hands down the best headset I've ever owned coming from the Nova arctis 7 and Cloud II's. I tried the Nova Pro's, but didn't like how it sounded. Audeze's were too expensive, and now these came out. Sounds great out of the box, better with Joe's EQ. Very easy to setup aswell. The microphone is just awesome, I get compliments every time from my friends on discord, aswell as people on Teams calls. Downsides for me are that the battery level cuts down from 100% to 50%, when power cycling the base station and charging the headset that problem resets. Also sometimes it doesn't make contact with the base so it doesn't charge.

Awesome to hear. I just bought a pair for my wife for Christmas. I have the Nova pros and I absolutely hate the ANC that rubs against my ear. My wife tried it and she agrees. Hope she likes the a50!

Great video again. I am a PS5 gamer, and just purchased this Astro. Compared with the SteelSeries NP wireless, I miss the number of presets per game. Also, as you mentioned in the video, if you have your game volume high, your friends will hear themself talk if you are talking to each other. Besides that, I'm using this headset over the SteelSeries all day every day Happy holidays man! keep up the great content.

I recently bought the A50X to play competitively in Call of Duty on PS5 mainly to use parametric eq on console. Which settings do you recommend for a competitive point of view? Should i toggle off hdmi audio and use only usb audio with tempest 3D? I'm not interested to game-to-chat mix

Everyone’s hearing is different, but generally any Spatial Audio, Surround Sound, including PS5 3D Audio isn’t good for FPS games. It makes footsteps and overall audio sound hollow and when you’re listening to footsteps, it makes it sound further away or closer than it actually is

I haven't been a big fan of Tempest 3D in some FPS games to be honest. The stereo mode has worked best for me, then use a good EQ to fine tune it and you're good to go. Thanks so much for the super chat btw!

I’ve tested the Astro A50 Gen 5 for 200 hours with the included ear pads and 150 hours with the leather ear pads from the Astro A50 Gen 4 Mod Kit. I find the included ear pads on the Gen 5 to be a bit small, but that’s probably just because I have a large head! :D I prefer the fabric ear pads from the Gen 5 for work and listening to music, as they allow me to stay aware of my surroundings. However, when playing FPS games, I prefer the leather Mod Kit from the Gen 4. With the Mod Kit, I don’t hear the fans from my PC, which is right next to me on my desk, and I enjoy the slightly larger fit around the ears. With the right EQ, I consider this setup, along with the Audeze Maxwell, to be one of the two best “gaming headsets.” I also really enjoy watching your headset reviews and appreciate the value you bring to such a large community. Keep up the great work!

With the A50 gen 5 when my headset dies do I need to plug the power cord into the headset and then connect to my pc via bluetooth to continue playing? Couldn't find a guide explaining this.

How's the charging? Read some amazon reviews saying that it had problems when being plugged in or docked. Sometimes it wouldn't start charging and everytime you would need to recharge it you would have to mess with it for a bit before it would start.

​@@Skippercarlos5 i got No charging Problems. I would recommend you to Charge the a50 with a usb-c cable , then you can Play while charging. With the Docking Station a full load Takes about 2-3hours and with a usb-c cable it take 1hour 20min. I also Got No connectivity problem with the docking Station. Right now im using the Wicked Cushions instead of the leather earpads for black ops6.

Tried them out but with the earpads being even smaller than the Gen 4s I returned them. Also quite some clamping force. Really happy with my ASUS Delta 2s though, your recommendation of them was great! Best headset I've had so far.

Literally had an order of the A50X due to arrive tomorrow but saw this and cancelled and picked up a same day delivery of the A50. Super comfortable and feels like a solid upgrade from G Pro X 2. I mainly got it for the charging base. I hate having to juggle cables to charge the G Pro so this is perfect. Only catch so far is the mic is super quiet. Have seen a couple of posts on reddit saying similar but no one has posted a solution. Have tried hard reset (holding sync button + game button for however many seconds), have checked mmsys.cpl etc but nothing obvious. I see what you mean about isolation. Think I'll look into some WC pads and tinker with EQ to counter the bass hit.

Great review. I have been enjoying my A50 Gen4s for years now but after taking them apart, again, to fix the not charging issue, I decided it was time for a new set. I returned my A50X as soon as the Gen 5 were revealed. I hated having 4 cables running just to use on my PS5. Prefer having just 2 now. Played enough and maybe its my ears but i cannot discern a difference between the two headsets and i only play shooters. I can hear details perfectly fine. Only change i made is that i use the Wicked Cushions Freeze model on mine.

I got my astros probably 8-10 years ago if not longer before they were bought by logitech and they JUST stopped working on me and were probably repairable pretty easily as it was probably a battery issue from it being so old. They last forever under the right circumstances if they are still being made to the same standard of quality! I loved mine for music and gaming alike. Just got the maxwells though specifically for the music side of things over gaming and the quality of the build and sound is phenomenal. Can't speak on how long they will last or anything but I suppose we shall see. I think mic is alright but not as good as the new astros from what I've heard.

@@Gotcha2313 5 years for a headset is amazing, usually all a "gaming headset" lasts is ~2 years. 5 years is a perfect ending point because it gives you a reason to upgrade while still being one of the longest lasting in the business.

In your opinion, which headset would you pick if you needed a loud mic monitoring (sidetone), but has great sound as well? I have an old Rig 800 headset that has an amazing voice monitoring, but recently bought a Arctic Nova Pro Wireless, which is absolutely terrible at voice monitoring. It's too low with side tones all the way up and transparency up as well. Everything else sounds good, but I'll be returning this for something else.

I had a pair from back before logitech purchased the company probably 10 or so years ago and the side tone on it was incredible. Didn't realize how spoiled i was until it just recently stopped working on me and I had to use a nova 7p temporarily and then I got the audeze maxwells very recently as a replacement and I think the astros sidetone is better than the maxwells too but only marginally. The maxwells are nice too but you have to be used to a heavy headset to use it, using the a50's for so long somewhat prepared me for it I like to think. No problems so far!

I think it's very close between this and NPW. There is an edge towards NPW if you factor in sound isolation, as that makes me more competitive. The bass/overall sound quality is better on A50 g5 though

im still going to be rocking the gen 4s. the fact i can route ALL the audio out of my tv into it's optical input, it lets me listen to all my consoles, plus cable tv, plus native tv apps etc. through the a50s in dolby 5.1. still in 2024 no other headset can do this afaik right?

If you are in party or game chat and you receive a phone call on Bluetooth, does the headset route your voice to the phone call instead of game chat? This is a feature that I need. Turtle beach and Steelseries wireless headsets do this and it is very convenient for me.

Yes only 16 bit through usb connection. The HDMI version does 24 bit on console, the usb version does 24 bit but only on pc.

One question I sent you previously, and I am REALLY hoping you can give me an answer on, is I also just purchased a pair of the GEN 4's, and I am wondering if there is any way to save a custom EQ setting to the GEN 4's that can carry over to console(PS5 specifically). Do settings/EQ's save to the headset? I want to use the W.C. pads, but because of the drastic sound difference, I would really hope I can make a customer EQ similar to the stock sound. Are Astro (Logitech) still using those flimsy pin connections on the base station ? On both my Gen 3 and 4 they’ve given me docking/charging trouble over time and on one base the tiny springs they use snapped. The RIG dock is miles more sturdy

How is the firmware handling these days? I have the Gen 4 A50s and I constantly need to re-flash the firmware via the god awful Astro Command Centre because I'll turn on the headset and it just wont connect to the base station. Also has the charging been made any more reliable? I have always found the Astros to be just fiddly to set down on the dock in order for it to get a good connection to the pins so it charges. Usually have to firmly push it into the dock or reseat it several times before the orange LED lights up. The hot-swap batteries on the Nova pros is such an awesome feature, makes me tempted due to how unreliable I've found the docking solution for the Astros. Nothing more annoying than picking them up to find they're still flat because the pin wasn't touching the headset because it was 1mm out of allignment.....

Sounds like you're having an issue I had a few months ago on the same Gen 4's. I had to take the headset apart to resolder one of the two main wires which was hanging on by a thread. It would seem the harder they get docked, the more the wire comes away inside. Once I resoldered both wires to ensure strong connection, it fixed both the charging & firmware situation. BUT before you consider this, try using a different cable or port to connect the dock & give the connector pins on the dock & the headset a good clean, preferably with alcohol wipes. If you decide to open them up then soldering is easy to do. I think there's even a vid on here on how to open them. Hope it helps!

Those topics should have been covered in this review, because in all actuality those bugs and the stupid standby mode are what keep this headset from being the absolute best of the best for versatility and gaming.

The a50x doesn’t have the same bugs that the old gen headsets had. I had a pair of Astros from 10 plus years ago and Logitech fixed those annoying bugs from back in the day since purchasing the company.

I’ve had so many issues with my Gen 4. I even just had a warranty replacement last month and they gave me a new set and no matter why I do my mic doesn’t work. Scared to Invest in astro again because I LOVE the headset. But the lack of support and buggy issues have ruined it for me.

Had everything I wanted until I found out out about the BT. Bluetooth to the dock and not the headset directly is crazy considering the price point. I was really looking at these to replace my aging Arctis Nova Pro Wireless(game on Xbox Series X and PC) maybe if they release an update version in the future.

I wanted these to work for me the most for CS. In the end there's a base sound in there that floods foot steps and other sound q's you need in CS. I tried Turtle Beach stealth pro, these A50's, hyper x cloud 3 wireless and the DT 990 PRO. I legit bought them all at the same time and the Canada Post strike almost made me go broke trying to do returns. Hyper X wins by a mile for FPS. The Stealth pro's were maybe a touch better but with that clamp force and price, no way. I'll stick to my g633's for cs since there's nothing on this planet I can find better for CS. Everything else, I kept the cloud 3's. I'll try a few more pairs this year later on but it's stressing me out.

I’m in the same position mate, pisses me off the fact I can’t use the optical port an get decent sound out of the Xbox all this Dolby atmos shit is terrible- we had better directional audio on the 360 years ago. Can’t even use pre sets on the mixamp no more. A 50s seem like a down grade without the removable mic a the temperamental docking station.

I own the Astro a50, and I can tell you , there is issues , had them since Covid ! Build quality is nice, there is problems with the mic glitching out and the up and down to put the mic doesn’t always work, audio issues like just don’t hearing noise ( I have to reboot the system ) and it is kinda annoying , just trying to play and stuff is not that well, I am planning on upgrading to the newest model the Astro X lightspeed, seems like they fixed all the issues compared to the regular Astro a 50

I wouldn't Buy the Nova Pro's PURELY On the FACT How CHEAP, AWFUL, TINNY & WORST MICROPHONE They Have !!! They May have Really Great SOUND, BUT IF the MICROPHONE IS SOOO AWFUL, TINNY & CHEAP etc SOUNDING...then I STAY AWAY from Headsets like that as I WANT the MINIMUM of a DECENT SOUNDING MIC on Headsets....& I can't Believe HOW they Couldn't Make a REALLY GOOD MIC for the Nova Pro's Wireless when they were & STILL Can be SOO EXPENSIVE ( I'm in Australia so the Cost Equates to More here than in America etc )....

Just returned my Maxwells because of the weight and comfort. Torn apart between Astro Gen 5 and EPOS H3PRO Hybrid. How would you compare them sound-wise? I will mostly use them for conference calls and gaming as I prefer my IEMs or DT770 Pro for music anyway.

Maxwell are better overall when it comes to sound quality, but the a50 are much more comfy, better QC, and probably better longevity as the Maxwell drivers are extremely fragile.

I purchased the Maxwell’s myself first before the Astro a50x and I returned the Maxwell’s due to the sound being way too low. I got frustrated with how low it sounded though it sounded great. I kept the Astro’s instead. The Maxwell’s has the better details and clarity slightly but the Astro a50x is a lot louder with details, just not as detailed as the Maxwell’s. Between the two minor difference in sound quality.

Nova pro wireless is a superior headset. Astro is like razer. Over priced, over hyped garbage. Logicrap ruined the astro brand when they bought it and started using cheaper materials to lower their production cost without passing any savings towards consumers. The only thing I've ever liked about Astro is the mic.

Nova pros are superior and the reason they have won best gaming headset last 2 yrs. You can see for yourself just by looking up reviews. They all say Novas are superior and everyone else is a distant 2nd place. Personally as someone whos owned over 15 pairs including Atros i would buy Novas then Gen 3 Turtle Beach over Astros every time.

@@StickyPickle-w4i it’s all preference in sound … Ive been team steel series heavy last 4 years .. but I just bought the turtle beach stealth pro , nova pro wireless , Astro A50x , and Audeze maxwells on holiday sale so I could test them all with the extended holiday return window . And without sonar if you’re on console the nova pros ranked last for me . They were definitely superior for when they came out 2 years ago , but companies have had the chance to see the blueprint and rival it . A50x and stealth pro are close in sound but once you customize the headset with parametric EQ the A50s are better than stealth pro , Maxwells sound the best Forsure tho with sound separation and clarity and they’re just so crispy … but the A50x has much better features so you have to decide which ones you like , sound or features .. All of them are great headsets tho but the rankings change depending on what you’re using … console or PC

Would be cool to see you try the Creative Zen Hybrid Pro SXFI. There isnt that many reviews online about them, which is a shame because on paper they seem to offer a lot for the price (And also because it isnt usual to see creative market some ANC wireless headphones that also can be used as a wireless headset with LC3+).

Sennheiser 490 the worse headphones on the planet for gaming audio there awful im currently using the beyerdynamic dt 1770 pro mk2 but there good but for me they give me a headache there to fatiguing retuning them you might like the beyerdynamic mmx 330 pro better less fatiguing I just ordered the harmonic x headphones they have really good reviews on Amazon mines will be in Tuesday stay safe and happy gaming to all.

If you want open back for gaming, the Aune AR5000 is pretty amazing (if you don't need a mic). 490 Pro isn't bad if you change out to the cloth mixing pads instead of the Velour producing pads

@@GadgetryTech Thx for the answer, I had already the 490 pro for 2 days and still testing it, so far they`re amazing, being hearing in game sounds that I`ve never have before lol, feels even strange, the comfort for me is amazing, that`s the most important factor for me, I`ll swap for the cloth mixing pads as well to give it a shoot, and take a look on those Aune AR5000 looks also pretty neat and nice build, I may can save something for it in a future.

How does Astro A50 Gen 5 compare to Audeze Maxwell? I know that Astro A50 Gen 5 have a better mic, but what about sound quality and gaming performance in general (directional sound, localisation)?

I like them both, and both are class leading in this price for pure sound quality. Overall, I like the sound of the Maxwell slightly more, but I like the controls, mic performance, and less buggy software on the A50 gen 5 more.

Thanks for the review. You mentioned the simultaneous Bluetooth and that you are using them for work. How are incoming calls handled? I really like the feature, but on my Nova Pros it really annoys me that every time a get a phone call the Mic instantly switches to phone and mutes on PC and it only switches back to PC after you declined the call or turned off Bluetooth. Its so stupid, you can't even say sorry i need to accept a call or so, because your mic is allready muted the moment you get the call... It should only mute when i accept the call and not every time i get some spam call or so... Is it the same for the Logitech?

I've had the A50X since release. Had an issue where, while playing COD, my screen will randomly go black for 5 to 10 seconds then come back on. I swapped out all my HDMI for top of the line and still happens occasionally. Seems better after the firmware update but does still happen. Have you had this happen to you?

I only had that issue with the cables if it’s a cheap cable. Cheap cables cause that problem. For me I used the standard cables that came with each console in the box and added the Apple TV cable I had laying around, so works great. If you still have the same issue then, your headset are defective.

How would this compare to buying a HD 560s + an external mic? Is the sound quality on an audiophile type headphone noticeably better and worth losing Bluetooth, buttons/controls on headset, etc?
