Fun fact: Kagura (神楽), the ceremonial music, translates roughly to mean "entertainment for the gods", since it's specifically a Shinto ritual dance session for the kami/gods. One of my professors in his first trip to Japan passed by a kagura group once and they handed him a cup of sake, saying "the gods like you drunk". That's, that's a thing that happens...

_My first introduction to gagaku music/art was Naruto Shippuden, particularly studying the music and instruments used by legendary composer Yasuharu Takanashi. I love how each facet, each instrument, of the orchestra has it's philosophical necessity. Wht I love most is how the music of Gagaku in Japan doesn't just encompass music...or even art, in terms of study: it quite stems from a particular way of life and thinking, and is even reflected in the geography, climate and culture itself. It's a very involved, but extremely subtle thing, and that's the easy-to-overlook beauty behind it, I think. A lot of people (particularly outside Japan, and even many within the local masses) don't realise how interconnected and involved Gagaku and music composition in general is._ Thank you

In Jōdo Shinshu buddhist temples it's common to play gagaku music in the entry and quit of monks in the altar, representing the opening of the portal to Pure Land, the Realm of Enlightenment, where the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and ancestors come to the ceremony for the monks to give them their voices for them to teach the Buddhist Wisdom for us

As an Asian, I've always wanted to know if other Asian countries also share the same taste in their court music. When I heard the first sample at 0:52, I thought that it sounds like a section in Malay court music; The Nobat, which is a court music reserved for a certain occasion like the King's or Agong's ascension to the throne. I guess Asian countries do share things in common with each other.

I love gagaku, ever since I first heard it when I was in 9th grade - yeah, my music tastes are pretty eclectic, to say the least. Aesthetically, it reminds me a lot of gamelan sekaten music from the courts of Central Java, which is played on gigantic gamelan instruments once a year for 6 days (in celebrations of Maulud, the prophet Muhammad's birthday). However, unlike in gagaku, Sekaten musicians typically play quickly (and loudly) towards the conclusion of a piece - part of that is due to a promise made by the Sultan/Sunan, whereby he is to give a prize to whoever can succeed in breaking one of the heavy bronze bars while playing. (To my knowledge, no one has succeeded in this task yet, even with buffalo-horn mallets topped with lead...) Here's some footage just from this year - better yet, this is footage of the piece Gendhing Rambu (pelog lima), the traditional opening piece for the annual Sekaten performance, where bystanders wait for the opening notes to take down the magically-charged palm decorations: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5PEgoZqeq6rj5Y

There are many chances to see gagaku (especially bugaku performances) in Japan, in shrines and temples. Shitennō-ji Temple in Osaka, Kasuga Shrine in Nara and Itsukushima Shrine in Hiroshima Prefecture have performances throughout the year. Other places are: many shrines in Kyoto; some other places in Nara; Sumiyoshi Shrine in Osaka; Meiji Jingū in Tokyo; Ise Shrine in Mie Prefecture; Atsuta Shrine in Nagoya.

The functions of the left and right brains differ between native speakers of Japanese and native speakers of foreign languages. Music, mechanical sounds, noise are the right brain, and language sounds are left brains, and both Japanese and Westerners are common. Vowels, crying, laughter, lamentation, insects and animal squeals, waves, wind, sound of rain, babbling, Japanese musical instrument sounds, etc. are heard by the Left Brain. Westerners listen to musical instruments and noise in their right brains Gagaku is a genre of Japanese music(Hougaku) Gagaku was originally a fusion of music from Asian countries, and about 1,000 years ago, it was completed in a rough shape. It is said that the present form was formed in the Nara period. As the music of the court, it is still performed at the events of the Imperial Family. In a familiar example, it is played at a wedding ceremony in front of the God.

bro that’s only etenraku, the first one you played. there are so many other songs that are played and it’s actually super fun learning the dances too, in my church we teach and learn it and we have done performances which is very fun. i have learn shoko, taiko, kako, and koto. i will also learn the ryuteki, sho, hichiriki and biwa parts as well as continue learning the bato/bugaku dance pieces.
