On this Gail Ann Dorsey Interview, Gail talked about challenges and obstacles she faced growing up in the West Philly hood, and her tenacity & resourcefulness to overcome. The irony of attending film school and it being a horrible experience, yet also being the vehicle that was most important to launching her music career.Moving to London, how she got the gigs with David Bowie, Charlie Watts, Lenny Kravitz, Olivia Newton-John, Boy George… getting signed by labels and why it didn’t really work out, typewriters, confidence, sadness of losing her mum, and loads more stuff. Incredibly cool and sincere convo
Gail Ann Dorsey is a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, songwriter, and recording artist who’s well-known as David Bowie’s bass player - she held this spot from 1995 - David passed in 2016, touring and playing on 5 Bowie LPs. For the past 9 years, Gail’s also been Lenny Kravitz’ bass player in his touring band
Gail’s also a successful session bassist. As a side person, she’s played or toured the world with a variety of artists like folksinger Dar Williams, Seal, Joan Osborne, Gwen Stefani, Gang Of Four, Tears For Fears, The National, Olivia Newton-John, Joan Baez, Gwen Stefani, Nona Hendryx, Suzanne Vega, Ani DiFranco, Natalie Merchant, Donny Osmond, Boy George, Charlie Watts Big Band, B-52s, Indigo Girls & others

This is why I love KZbin. Great people talking good music and telling stories. Gail looked so cool on stage with Bowie. They were good friends and used to go to museums and have lunch in New York. Imagine being a friend of David Bowie ❤️ 🎶

I have been listening to and watching Gail for decades. Her playing with David Bowie & his bands is legendary. Her version of Under Pressure with DB on his Reality tour is mesmerizing. A gifted musician and wonderful person. My daughters love Gail and her work to elevate women in the music scene.

Great questions mr. EveryoneLovesGuitar!. jean-victor de Boer, the dog is a random channel I use...what fantastic recollection Gail has. I auditioned for Gail's band, but didn't get the job and went on tour with the goth band Christian death instead . I think her label - Warner at the time - had spotted me briefly on a coke commercial with Whitney Houston. Her bass player at the time- Dave Clarke, whom she mentions, tall, handsome and very cool-was I believe the M.D.the nicest, most gentlemanly guy you could meet at the time and we got on well and remained good friends for a while. Gail was unfortunately not present during the auditioning process, or at least I never got the chance to meet her.. Don't know who ended up getting the drum chair following this batch of auditions... Anyway, it is quite outrageous that record companies can't find the time or money to re-release her stuff, especially that second album with what she describes as "her best vocals on record ever!" And hats off to the great (free)jazz drummer and behind the scenes worker John Stevens, who with his collective helped so many musicians along. Died too early.

I still get goosebumps every time I hear Gail Ann singing "why can't we give love one more chance " from Under Pressure on the Reality tour, and up until then never thought it possible that anyone could pull off those vocals. To this day, even though it's not easy to find the video, indulge yourself, it's better than the original. Great interview, thank you, you are a very good host!

I saw Gail Ann Dorsey singing with Bowie doing 'Under Pressure' three times and each time I said, she one ups Freddie Mercury! And then consider she's playing that funky bass line at the same time she's singing, I don't think Freddie could pull that off. My favorite versions of U.P. are with GAD & DB.
@greenogre22
@greenogre22 5 ай бұрын
well, firstly gail ann dorsey is a woman as you know i guess whereas freddie mercury is a man. do you remember? if you compare those two you should be aware of this fact and recognize the differences between female and male voices. secondly as freddie mercury pulled it off obviously on the records in an outstanding way it is even more worth of being recognized because it is considered to be harder for a man‘s voice. gail ann dorsey has got one wonderful voice with its own timbre and has done this song more than justice and freddie would approve for sure but nothing goes over the original, sorry. it‘s simply too good with freddie mercury and his many timbres.

Us Musicians are Musicians because Music is an Art form we decided to study and put into practice because we liked/loved it. Now, this Art form we as Immortal Beings continue doing especially if in a passed lifetime we experienced enjoyment with it. Now, that is how you will see a 4 yo kid play Piano or any instrument like killer good! 😂 And people call it “Talent”, “Gifted”, “A Gift from God”, etc,… Most people don’t get it. “Because they are living on the Blue Pill” (think the Matrix) 😂 Everything we learned in previous lifetimes we come back with. We comeback with abilities we gained from previous lifetimes. That is fact. That is why Musicians who were Musicians for many lifetimes will choose “a musical family” to born into. If this sounds weird and unreal to you. It is because we have been PROGRAMMED to believe otherwise. Hence the “blue pill” analogy. All abilities beings have in one lifetime is because we have learned it and practiced it in one or more of our passed lives. And since we are ALL immortal beings, we will all come back when we decide to. To De-Program yourself from the false programmed data we were “injected” with. You will have to REALIZE that it was all a lie. The purpose? CONTROL‼️

From the first time I saw her on stage till now I was irrevocably connected ❤ And when She opened her mouth, WOW!! Be still my beating heart... It's just that the connection was our growing up as artistcly inhanced children in the 60,s and 70,s . We are also both from PA. . I even lived in Laguna 😂 Beach for 5 years in the 80,s. I hated living there. Did not like LA. " LOVELY GAIL ANN DORSEY". ❤❤❤

Let me help you.. you've never seen one, you can't prove it would exist and no. People just die. That is it. You have a good second or two after "death" as your brain winds its spark down. Spirt.... come on.

This interview was truly awesome. I learned so much about Ms. Gail Dorsey's journey, the other talents she has and people she met along the way who helped her and she mainly helped herself. So much sharing of Ms. Dorsey's life before being a musician till now is mind blowing. Being a collector of typewriters is a good thing too keeping up with those finger touching. I enjoyed learned so much and what a voice she has as well.i am pretty sure once this pandemic is over Ms. Dorsey will return and perhaps cut an album that will be well received. I hope it's soon.

So happy to hear Gail talk about Tony Maiden as he is one of my biggest rhythm heroes from Rufus days, an amazing player. I've been singing his praises to people for a long long time AND she is right ! he is far too underrated. I'm so glad Gail got her career in music, instead of Hollyweird, these people are satanic.

I'm a Belgian guy, no longer very young, 38 years old. I've been a Bowie fan since I was 15, when my father gave me the "Best of Bowie" album, sensing something special in me. I never got to see Bowie live. I was supposed to go to one of his concerts at a Belgian festival, but an incident involving a lollipop thrown into his eye at a previous concert led to the cancellation of what would have been THE concert of my life. I worked as a technician at Radio France for a number of years. Bowie had been there a few years before I worked there. So I never got the chance to cross his path. I've been playing guitar since I was 10-12. By chance, my parents never wanted me to play music. I've tried my hand at violin, cello, flute, drums... I'm even currently taking classical harp lessons at the conservatory. I consider myself an average musician. I have a very good ear, I think, but I'm not technically good. It's on bass (and drums), however, that I find the most instinctive pleasure. But they never really got me into it, as if I considered it an inferior instrument. Of course, I discovered Gail Ann Dorsey with David Bowie. I'm so inspired by this kind, spontaneous and natural woman. Thank you for this long interview. It reinforces my desire to persevere and be spontaneous in my desires, and maybe one day do what I want with my life and no longer endure it in a profession that doesn't resemble me. I'm so touched to see that she, too, started modestly and achieved so much through perseverance, while remaining such a beautiful person. What a source of inspiration. Thank you!!!

This woman's story - the things that inspired her in her childhood, etc. sounds just like my own experience - except she did something with it. I taught myself to play listening to Wheels of Fire, and the first real concert was in 1971 - Glass Harp, Cactus and Grand Funk Railroad. My first guitar was a $45 noname from a Acme/Click store. A couple of years later I bought a Gibson SG with one black plastic pickup (P90?) and had a fixed broken neck. This guitar came through a guy named Rich Underwood, who had jammed with Hendrix.

The first thing she said, which really stuck out was the bit about her Mom always having the radio on the same thing in my house. I won't bore you, but living in the Akron/Cleveland area, late 60s early 70s was a gem of a place to be into music. One night in '72, while hitching home to Munroe Falls, I got picked up by Glenn Schwartz, the guy that quit James Gang , to be replaced a while later by Joe Walsh. By this time, though he was from Cleveland, he had been in Pacific Gas and Electric. We sat across from my house for about 20 minutes while he called me out for my sins so I could repent - to him. We hitched up to Cleveland one Saturday to hang out at the WNCR studio (program director Billy Bass, credited with breaking Hunky Dory onto America). Speaking of Carlie Watts, our older son Andy played Charlie as an extra in the movie Cadillac Records. What a great interview you have brought us!@@EveryoneLovesGuitar
