It doesn't make any sense, the Platt family went through a traumatic experience after what Richard did and it affected David greatly. Gail was taking sleeping pills because the Platt's were receiving cards from somebody pretending to be her late husband and found out it was David sending the cards from Richard Hillman. Gail had every right to shout at David because it was a really nasty thing to do, Gail was so frightened she even reported it to the police.

Hillman as in Richard Hillman the man who killed his ex wife and Maxine Peacock and also tried to kill Emily Bishop and Audrey for their money. After the Platt's found out Richard even drove them all into a canal but Richard himself didn't survive. David sent his family cards from Richard Hillman to split Gail and Phil up after Phil pinned David against the wall and flat out denied it resulting in Gail slapping David in the face.
