Making Hungarian tart, or jam tart as we called it, as a treat for the kids was a regular exercise in the Luckan household. This was one of my go to recipes for when we needed the perfect accompaniment for tea time! Also does great during Diwali time!
Ingredients
4 cups cake flour, sieved
4 tsp baking powder
4 tbs oil
2 large eggs
250g margarine
1 tsp vanilla essence
4 tbs castor sugar
jam of your choice for spreading
desiccated Coconut to dust on jam (optional)
Icing sugar to dust at the end
Serve with a nice cup of tea or coffee at breakfast time or at tea time!

Loved the video. Just thought I'd share a trick my aunt used to do. The piece for dough that is grated at the end must be put in the freezer for a little while so it makes it easier grate. Love your cooking channel and learning so much. Take care Selina

Great idea with the coconut . ....I too put my dough in the fridge before grating. I find if it freezes it does not grill so nice on top

Another way is to roll it out and cut out strips and lay it in a criss cross manner

I used to make this for my gran all the time when I lived in Durban, she loved them. She was an amazing cook herself but was always nervous about using the oven. She taught me so much about cooking, for that I'm so greatful. Thank you for sharing your wisdom and technique, we are blessed by it.💖💖💖

Even I myself am not the most comfortable using the oven here at home. Pranesh helps me out with the settings so that we don’t burn our baking! It’s a pleasure, thank you for your lovely words 🙏🏼🙏🏼

Hi gaithree lovely recipe i just put mine i. The oven now . U r such an inspiration to woman . If u take off your washing nachine cover it will fit under your cupboard . I have done that in my sons house n it works . ❤ lots of love to u . Keep on baking ma .

It’s one of my favorites I make it but after the jam & coconut I slice up some dates I also add icing sugar over the top when it comes out of the oven ....it comes out very nice ...love your recipes ..stay well & safe

Good morning Mum. It is indeed beautiful 😊 it's my daughter's favourite. I was just thinking about you, and here I see you with a new recipe. Just got back from jhb last night. We had to use the back roads to JHB on Friday. Took us literally 12hrs🥺 we could have been to PE... I actually wanted to know if you've cooked braised turkey or a turkey fry with onions and chillies, and just a tomato or 2. I haven't cooked it before, was thinking of trying it. Yeah we had friends traveling down to Durban from up here and they also had to divert and took much longer! We haven’t tried Turkey that way ourselves. Just roast but will experiment a little bit

Thank you for the recipe....we also prefer the thicker base.Just wanted to ask...my tart loses its crispness after a few days....can I add some maizena to keep it crisp?is so,how much should I add for 4 cups of flour?thank you for all the recipes...every one i tried worked out Perfectly!!!

Maizena may make the pastry base too dry when it’s freshly baked. I would try an alternate solution - when you are storing the cut jam tart pieces in a container add some sugar to the bottom of the container and then place wax wrap over this sugar. Then place your jam tart pieces on the wax paper and seal the container. The sugar should help keep the initial crispness for longer (it acts as a desiccant of sorts).

Hi you can try substituting each egg for 1/4 cup yoghurt or buttermilk. Also check out the eggless cake recipes we have done such as the snowballs, the chocolate cake and we have a soji cake loading tomorrow (Sunday) morning.

Question.... I noted that mum added the wet ingredients to the dry. Does it matter if I added dry to wet, and knead? I usually always add dry to wet. Is there a difference in the final result?

No particular reason. We just prepared the wet ingredients first and it was in a smaller bowl so then we added to the bigger bowl to be able to work the dough…

This is a favorite in our home, but a word to the non Hungarians coconut is never used traditionally, they don't grow there! sometimes my Nagymama (Grandmother in Hungarian) would use slivered almonds. Use what you like and enjoy!

1. Use butter 2. Add dry ingredients to wet 3. Its a biscuit dough, kneading is not necessary 4. Dough should be soft, not elastic/hard 5. Bake for max 20 minutes to ensure biscuit does not dry out 6. I noticed the base was a bit unbaked - it was too thick

@@GaithreeDeviLuckan I make my base thicker too. My children prefer it thicker. I also mix my dough by hand. I think people get confused by the word knead from mix. Thanks for the coconut tip I'm sure going to add it next time. Your recipes are truly a gem. Thank you for taking the time to share with us appreciated. Be well sister.
