As a Cronulla supporter, I see both sides. However, I have no issues with them celebrating it as long as it was in house like it was. It was for the players who deserved it, and they celebrated it with the storm fans. They didn't televise it on channel 9 or fox to rub it in anyone's faces, the only way it got out was because of outside media and journeys reporting on it (which can't be dodged). I feel the storm are copping it so much because they have been such a great and dominant side ever since they entered the comp, as much as I hate them, I can't hate them for this. I'm sure I will cop it a bit from this however this is my opinion.

I feel like the NRL and this panel are being a bit hypocritical. The NRL has never rewarded clubs for nurturing and developing players from a young age to then watch them get poached by other teams. The NRL could have avoided this scandal if they rewarded clubs for developing players through their system. The Storm have a track record developing young talent through their systems but lose out when teams come in offering them more money. I know the storm have a record also, poaching other teams good young players yes but the Storm wouldn’t have the opportunity to do so if players who have come through the junior ranks to play in 1st grade don’t count against the salary cap. Clubs should be rewarded for investing time, money etc etc into young players who make it into the 1st grade team. Pay them whatever you want if you’ve developed them through your system. Most of those storm teams were players who came in through their system but were hard to keep due to a dumb salary cap. I’m a neutral fan so I had no problem with what they did. The NRL needs to update their salary cap rules to reward teams for developing young talent that is my take on this

The Storm should have been given discounts for players who played more than 5 years at the club. This is how club loyalty starts. The Storm doesn't have a junior nursery and still won on the day. As far as I am concerned they were the champions in '07 and '09.

Why? Every other team contributes some local warriors and culture. But it's been 25 years and over a billion dollars, and I can't name a single player from anywhere in Victoria, let alone Melbourne? No household names from 7 million people? No warrior blood or culture provided. Loyalty starts with a dedicated local reserve grade. Not an endless NRL gift of players from one of the most talented development areas on the planet. It will be even harder when the other new team comes and competition for imports becomes even hotter.

What Gould and others are conveniently ignoring is, if the same rules applied to all other clubs, like they were allowed an unlimited salary cap, or they all ran hidden expenses, 2 sets of accounting keeping books, what would the competition look like? Surely Melbourne would've struggled to keep their star players if they were offered larger money offers to go to other clubs, or had to let some of their star players go, because they couldn't keep them all under a salary cap. If other clubs had the same deal as Melbourne, surely, they would use that deal to their advantages. Why can't Gould just admit that it was unfair for Melbourne to break the rules and play under a different system, putting all others at a disadvantage, that's called cheating, especially when you attempt to cover it up. It doesn't matter if someone knew about it in the NRL administration and did nothing for a while about it, it's still cheating. Gould and Gallen are right, you can't hand the premierships to Manly and Parramatta, they didn't deserve it, we will never know what could've happened if the Storm weren't caught cheating. Same with Bulldogs in 2001, the Warriors also were caught out, how many more are doing similar things. In 2010 when Melbourne was forced to play for zero points through the year, it was Gould who blew up about it, and said those players affected should move to other clubs and play for points, have other NRL clubs employ those players, put a second-string side in for Melbourne to play for points. Gould was keen on this for other reasons, he wanted the QLD based players for Melbourne cut up and dispersed as that would hurt QLD's chances come Origin time.

Interesting to note that since that event, Melbourne has continued to be one of the top teams, whilst some who were supposedly disadvantaged by the salary cap breach by Melbourne and later were not, have still managed to maintain their mediocre records, but now have no excuses to put forward. I really can’t believe the amount of top grade manure that gets thrown in Melbourne’s direction by some people who seem unable to give credit where credit’s due. I’m a Storm supporter, but I can not only acknowledge the supremacy of the Panthers over the last two years, but enjoy watching them play. Even when they’re beating the Storm. Given that every club in the Comp was doing exactly the same thing, I have always found something a little ‘OFF’ about the whole saga. I remember being immensely impressed with the attitude of the players, who went out every game that season and played the best they ever could, in spite of the whole season being a dead rubber. The head honcho of the NRL back then is hardly a choirboy either. The hypocrisy is strong with this one.
