It got silly though to the point of borderline stupid. As soon as the vipers blew past each other neither side firing a shot, the rules of battle had been set. There literally was nothing for the fighter jocks to stress over. They would have known they were not the target. I really didn't understand Caine's battleplan to begin with. If the goal was to take over the Galactica, she would have ordered Marines into boarding shuttles. The fighters would have only been support. In the original Battlestar Galactica the fighter jocks were also used as Marines. But that wasn't the case in this version. So where were the Marines to take over the Galactica? If the fighter pilots landed in the hangers, they would have never even made it out of their cockpits before being taken out by the Galactica Marines. The answer is simple. The story didn't allow for the more obvious battleplan. Had shuttles been in play, the Galactica fighters would have been ordered to destroy and disable the shuttles and a dog fight would have immediately commenced. So the writers best response was this ridiculous dog and pony display with characters making stressful comments as if they were in anything more than a dance between two opposing dance troops. It was bad writing as a result of a story scenario that didn't make a lot of sense to begin with and they were forced to write about and this was the best they could come up with. But the same could be said for the destruction of the Pegasus. The Galactica was the more obvious sacrificial lamb. But the show is "Battlestar Galactica". So the appearance of a second Battlestar had to be short lived. What happened to the Pegasus in the original made more sense than what happened in this version of the show. But the show needed drama so Caine had to mutiny and the Pegasus had to be sacrificed. Whereas the more obvious approach would have been no drama with chain of command, and the cyclons simply focusing all of their resources in one major fight where the fleet couldn't emergency jump before the attack commenced. Thus the Pegasus being the more obvious force defends the fleet and possibly perishes in the battle while the Galactica finally jumps with the fleet.

Neither side was willing to take first shots and so deliberately antagonized one another hoping the other would shoot first, and allowing weapons free in self-defense. The difference is that Caine is hoping for a surrender via intimidation. This is all laid out in the dialogue and action. Tigh says, "We have to allow them to defend themselves." That's right, DEFEND. The game of literal viper chicken played by the two pilots shows that neither side truly wants to fight, but is looking for an excuse to start a slaughter. The pilots are positioning themselves perfectly for the moment they are given the command to fire. Sliding into kill zones, disorienting the opponents... it is full tactical combat without any firing. I agree with you that you really did not understand Caine's plan.

Michelle Forbes did such an awesome job playing Admiral Helena Cain. She ramped up the viewer's hatred of her character from the first second we saw her until she was killed. Absolute god tier acting, as were the rest of the cast. It really helped sell the prospect of the two Battlestars going at each other like that. We don't see anything like it in this day of reality TV and effing Tik Tok. I can't see a remake of BSG being any better than this version, but if it's nearly as good I'll be pleasantly surprised.

Some of these ideas actually pan out, the majority just go nowhere. It's all about raking in cash fast, then jumping ship when that fast money runs out and moving to the next recycled idea.

Pegasus have the guns, but can’t take as much of a beating that the Galactica can. As seen at New Caprica the damage the Galactica took would have destroyed other battlestars.

The Pegasus was a quarter bigger and easily out gunned and out armored the Galactica. The Mercury Class Battlestars were the top of the line, most advanced warships in the Colonial Fleet-It could easily take on 2 and a half Cylon Baseships, leaving them as smoking slag with minimal damage. Galactica could take on two and win, but with massive damage.

@@richlisola1 Adama even (begrundgingly) confirms this when confronted by roslin and cain. The colonial battlestars are absolute terror machines on the battlefield. Many magnitudes superior to basestars. But the galactica is old, stripped and wanting for pretty much everything. Hell, it has half of its original gun batteries and armor platings! Makes the whole struggle more palatable. The Pegasus is such a mighty warship it was capable of leading a longwinded assault on the cylons without being any worse for wear. It entered this war practically fully stocked, maintained and upgraded. I dont think this series would have worked if the galactica was as mighty as the pegasus. In a fight to the death between galactica and pegasus at that very moment when this standoff happened, the galactica would have been obliterated without putting up much resistance. When pegasus arrived it became the uncontested dominant force in the fleet. Attacking her was always suicide.

@@richlisola1 The Pegasus was an experimental boondoggle. Cain was given command to sideline her in an experimental ship that would never be more than a massive testbed, not a ship of the line. She was meant for fleet logistical support, given all of her manufacturing capabilities. She was big, but she wasn't a pure fighting machine.

Because the universe is kinda limited compared to something like star wars/star trek. In those 2 ex you can make stories with new characters in different time-periods that wont impact other shows and the universe will always fall back to a status-quo but with BSG it will always end one way, it will always go down to the flotilla and cylon vs colonials. At most we can have something about the first cylon war but thats about it. I love BSG to death but there isnt much you can do with its universe

I've always enjoyed the battle scenes and storyline of BSG over Star Wars (which I also enjoy most of the time). Now I'm going to upset some people, but I think Star Trek is boring and flat out overrated. I don't get the fuss over that series, but nothing is for everyone.

From a pure fire power perspective, the Pegasus completely out classes the Galactica. However, if you get above the Pegasus and she does not have birds in the air, she’s pretty much toothless as she has no good firing arcs.

I actually wouldn't count on that; offensive and defensive capabilities are more like a game rock-paper-scissors here. We know that Cylon military doctrine favors guided missile barrages, which Galactica and Pegasus counter in different ways. Galactica has a thick coat of armor and can deploy a flak shield (by just lighting space on fire between itself and the enemy), but we know from some scenes that Pegasus' defense is electronic warfare based, with incoming missiles often being scrambled and detracted before impact. This is mirrored in real life. WW2 era battleships were heavily armored to be able to withstand direct hits. Modern warships lack this kind of armor, as missile-based warfare has also shifted defensive measures towards speed, maneuverability and electronic countermeasures. So there is a good reason to assume that Pegasus is going to lack the thick coat of armor Galactica brings to the table, which a capable commander could exploit by advancing to point-blank range. Which might very well be possible. This isn't an all out war. Galactica and Pegasus aren't playing cat and mouse all over the system; this is essentially two ships of the same battlegroup engaging in fratricide. Of course, Galactica doesn't seem to have any ballistic guns meant to engage a ship in a broadside maneuver. She is a carrier, her main weapons are her fighter complement and her nuclear arsenal. But if she did manage to get up close to Pegasus, she could bring her flak to bear, which on point blank range might be enough to seriously damage Pegasus. Of course, both ships would likely get irreparabely damaged that way. But at least it won't be as one-sided a fight as one might think.

Based on the angles and the way cain did right there. If adama just did not care and opened fire right at the moment their vipers launched. Pegasus would not have survived. No chance. Not against a jupiter sitting that way in a mercury or a minerva. Gotta use those bow chasers lol.

it was a stealth fighter, which does not appear on sensors. Cylons being machines, rely solely on sensors (with the exception of skinjobs) (Before you ask, the only reason it showed up on Galactica's and Pegasus dradis is because of the messaging with apollo)

Problem with Cain being kept around is, that she A. outranked Adama B. is not likely to have accepted any demotion and C. has a God complex. Roslin's authority only works when people accept that authority. Cain would have tried Martial law, like Adama did. However, Cain has more personnel and some people would would like to start the abuses and killings. Finally, Cain probably would have destroyed some of the rag tag fleet to get her way.
