"This is the Battlestar Pegasus to the ship claiming to be the Galactica. Please respond." That has to be my single favorite line throughout the entire series. Looking back at it it does also hint at Cain’s suicidal battle tactics since she’s headed straight in (CBDR) when there are literally dozens of ships surrounding Galactica. That as far as she knows could have been cylon warships.

I hate it.. i get its a much more advanced ship wich requires less crew but there is a difference between that and a tiny CIC with just a couple screens here and there.. Pegasus is still a huge Battlestar with lots of weapons and over 200 Vipers as her standard complement.. her CIC set looked like something improvised fast.. Hell even the Demetrius CIC looks better
@PaiSAMSEN
@PaiSAMSEN 4 жыл бұрын
Knowing that a significant chunk of Pegasus are fighter production facility, I wonder how much of the Pegasus is actually warship. Since only the warship part need the CIC, it might be another reason why Pegasus's CIC is smaller than expected. Then again, with proper automation, it can theoretically take as few as 15 people to control a starship.

You can see that the Pegasus is the supireor ship, just by the fact that the DRADIS on Pegasus can differentiate between Pegasus and Galactica's viper, but Galactica only shows all vipers as Colonial vipers. And even though these screens are in the shot for only a frame or two, just the fact they did the effort makes the show a whole lot better.

There's a reason for that which was discussed in the original mini-series. The Cylons could hack any complex computer technology, especially those accessible to wireless signals. That is how their surprise nuclear attack on the colonies in that miniseries succeeded - but also why Galactica alone, with its deliberately primitive technology, survived.

This show was so intensive to watch for me back then when it premiered. No other show could give me such an experience ever since. The constant oscillation between hope and despair, the permanent presence of something sinister, which turned out to be not always outside. Most of all, the deeply shameful feeling what people are able to do to each other even on the verge of extinction. I loved the mix of realism (no aliens), mysticism (links to old greek mythology), logic in story development and characters behavior, twists in the plot (sometime brutal), the music score.. just everything about it. I say one more big THX to all the creators of this fantastic show.

Its interesting, what one considers logic in story and characters another will not think so. But to the 'realism' part, we don't know. I always thought that by making the Cylons a human creation it got rid of one of the most interesting aspects of the original. That humanity was in a fight against what was essentially a terminator race built by another race. Instead it boiled down to the same old crap of creator/creation storylines we've seen before.

rizon72 I am totally agree with you, the only part that never like me was the Cylons as humans and the "divine" stuff. In the first series the Cylons were tools made by an unknown reptilian species whom wanted to exterminate any other species for some unknown reason. That unknowns pieces is what could make the mystery very appealing to resolve. I want to mean with the "divine" stuff, things like Starbuck's disappearance and re-appearance at the end, so we could think is something like an "angel". Yes i like the religion plot, mysticism, greek mythology , Baltar cult, etc., because that shows the need for hope of all the survivors.

@@EzioDeCreeper Not as much as you'd think,, for several reasons. (it's engineering time) On a technological side of things, they can safely build larger structurally sound designs than we can. On one practical side, the ship crews far more and operates on a far wider range of missions than submarines or even traditional warships, so increased space, especially since the crew can't go outside on deck, is a reasonable reason for larger corridors. And on another practical side, a submarine is still in an atmosphere and surrounded by water when not on the surface. A starship is out on it's own, with only the air it can carry. Large, air filled hallways give crew in them a more comfortable breathing environment, both in terms of being stuck in the can long term, and in the event ventilators have an issue and they're stuck unable to move to another part of the ship there's literally that much more breathing room before things become a problem for the stuck crew.

I always liked the detail that after this, admiral kane says "welcome back to the colonial fleet" when pegasus is the one joining the fleet. I know it makes sense the she would say that given she has highest rank but I think it also foreshadows how little regard she gives to the civilian fleet and highlights the tension between her send adama early on. She derives authority solely from a now largely defunct military structure while adama was increasingly deriving authority from the loyalty and trust he inspired on galactica.

Admiral Cain was probably somewhat in denial by that point. Remember, she originally had a civilian fleet following her battlestar around as well, but scrapped it for parts and fuel so she could continue war operations. In her delusional mind, she probably still thought of herself as leading a "fleet" despite only having one ship remaining.

Since Cain was a rear-admiral and a flag officer on detached service at the time (by Colonial military protocol and maybe not our modern Earth military type protocols) she outranked Adama by quite a bit so yes, since she was the highest ranking officer and an admiral, wherever she was, SHE was the Colonial Fleet. Besides, she had to establish her authority quickly so that there would be no disputes. It being BSG, of course there were disputes later but they were mostly held in private until later. The things she did, the things she felt she had to do were something most of us will never have to face. I don't defend her but I understand where she was coming from and the choices she felt she had to make when she and the Pegasus were alone with no help and no hope.

Admiral Cain also didn't bother calling the _Galactica's_ commanding officer by his rank, simply addressing him as "Adama," as a superior officer would a junior. Adama reinforces this by calling her by rank and name, and behaving more formally. Nothing wrong with either's action, but it does wonderfully set up the upcoming tension in authority and command.

KingreX32 I had the same reaction. You feel so hopeful at first that the Pegasus has shown up. Then when you find out what Admiral Cain and her crew have done, the moral compromises they have made, the lines they have crossed, the innocent civilians that as soldiers they should have done everything to protect and instead left to die, and it becomes truly horrific. The personal tragedy of Cain, who is a strong and forceful military commander, but who has taken her beliefs to the extreme, justifying her actions all the way, and gone over the edge. It was an interesting contrast with Adama. In the first episode, after the Cylon attack, he too is all gung-ho about taking the Galactica and attacking the Cylons despite overwhelming odds. He is convinced to instead turn to defending and protecting the civilian fleet by the newly sworn in President(a former school teacher).In one of my favorite lines from the series she says to him, "I don't know why I(a civilian) have to keep telling you(the professional soldier) this. The war is over. We lost."

KingreX32 I think hitting back, getting revenge is the first instinct of anyone, especially after a sneak attack or getting blindsided by an enemy. There is a quote by a U.S. admiral(can't think of the name) after the Pearl Harbor attack, "When this war is over the only place Japanese will be spoken is in hell." That instinct is why the crew of the Pegasus is so devoted to Cain. Her iron will, her discipline, and her willingness to make the hardest of hard decisions has kept them alive, in the fight, and able to hit back at the hated Cylons. Her thinking is strictly military, taken to the extreme, and her crew thinks the Galactica crew has gone soft. Adama might have gone down the same road, but he had the President and his son Apollo to act as a moral compass and talk him into following a different path.
@ericsaari2901

Yeah, they wrote Cain as an interesting contrast to Adama. Absolute contrast really. Interesting as that was, I was disappointed. Would have far, far preferred a heroic Adm Cain that nonetheless still at odds with Adama on most choices. They could have ramped that up without pushing her that far across the line. I suppose that would have made her more like the original Cain, and maybe even less like the namesake after which she is named as a character, but I can't help think it would be a lot better. Could have been amazing.
@dongilleo9743
@dongilleo9743 7 жыл бұрын
Eric Saari That is a good point. I think they made everything darker in this version of Battlestar Galactica, from the sets to the characters and especially the plot. A Cain that was constantly in conflict with Adama, but without going over the edge, would have been interesting. Part of the conflict was that she outranked Adama. He had developed a working relationship with the President to cooperate. Cain shows up, begins to order Adama around, and has no intention of taking orders from the civilian president. If I remember correctly, in the original series Adama outranked Cain, but Cain was a wild card constantly going off on his own to do what he wanted or thought was best. The original Cain reminds me of the U.S. WW2 general Patton; a great military commander, very offensive minded, who was always exceeding or ignoring his orders.

A Model T Ford is a classic, doesn't mean it can beat a Mustang in a street race. The Pegasus was 2/3rds larger than the Galactica and had far superior fire power. In addition it also had Viper and Rapter factories on board to turn out new ships from scrap as well as flight simulators to train new pilots in a safe and controlled environment. Also the Pegasus had automation hardware so it could be crewed by much fewer men, while not being centralized and vulnerable to the Cylons. From a tactical stand point sacrificing the Pegasus was foolish and Adama was as well for not using it in the rescue mission.

I've already downloaded the score for the series as a result and played this track multiple times. What a masterpiece of a scene! I love it! *I've watched this episode now and I expect it'll be one of the best of the series if not the best, I still love watching this, it tears me up every time.. that full shot of the Pegasus after all that lead up.. Amazing. You really gotta hand it to the people that put this together and Bear for making such an outstanding track to accompany it.. So glad to have picked up this series.

It was a great scene, too bad the backstory with Helena Cain wasn't so awe inspiring. She was actually cannibalizing helpless civilian ships to keep her own running and giving their crews choices, "serve on my ship or die". They picked a good actress (Michelle Forbes) for the role of Cain and I wished she had gone on to either command the fleet, or back to Star Trek Discovery as the Captain of her own ship.

No need to reveal aggressive intent (or capabilities) until a real threat is confirmed. Might as well stay silent, wait, and gather data. I am not sure why they held jump. It would have been safer to let the civilians jump away while Galactica protected their position and investigated. Despite everything that happens after this, this is probably one of my favorite scenes in the series. Imagine thinking you're the last of humanity for months or years only to happen upon not just a group of civilian ships, but another Battlestar. And to make it even better, a Mercury is one of the greatest assets a fleet can have since it can recoup Viper and Raptor losses on top of everything else a Battlestar provides. It also marked the point where the Colonials stopped running from the Cylons and actually went on the offensive for a time. The only way it could've been better (or at least a little humorous) would be if the Pegasus had arrived while Adama was unconscious and he woke up to the Fleet now having two Battlestars and a Flag Officer. Edit: I also just noticed that Apollo's IFF on the Pegasus's DRADIS is Galactica CAG rather than a numerical Viper designation.

Loved the addition of the Pegasus to the fleet. As in, the fleet finally catches a solid break for once. Able to build new fighters, which implies a rather complete production capacity the Galactica lacked. Hated the way the show kept going farther and farther down the grim dark path, as with what later happens to her because of Apollo's decisions. As likeable as Apollo was supposed to be, his decisions in command of the Pegasus and ultimately on Earth were catastrophic for the human race. The show was called BSG Galactica, but the Pegasus was in every single way a superior resource for the fleet - throwing it away to save his dad's 'venerable' ship was not ideal.
@Cailus3542
@Cailus3542 3 жыл бұрын
It was a poor writing decision, in the end. It would've made far more sense if the Pegasus had to sacrifice herself to save the Fleet as a whole, rather than Galactica. Consider this scenario: Admiral Adama always intended to sacrifice Galactica at New Caprica. It would've been better if all the Cylon basestars fighting Galactica realised what was happening and began moving to attack the civilian fleet. Galactica is too badly damaged to do anything, so Pegasus has to jump in instead to cover the civilian exodus. Despite being impossibly outnumbered, Lee pulls some brilliant moves and Pegasus goes down in a blaze of glory, destroying all four Cylon basestars, winning the battle and saving humanity as a whole. Even better, for Lee, it would've been the culmination of his character arc. He'd become overweight, complacent, overly cautious. His father told him that he'd lost his edge. Saving the day like that would've been the perfect way to finish that, to show that Lee still has his edge, that he stepped up when needed, and that he was worthy of being commander of Pegasus. Gah, I wish Pegasus's sacrifice had been handled better. It's a sore spot with me too.

The show is called Battlestar Galactica. It could not have continued more than an episode or two without the Galactica. But yes, in the show's logic, they should have planned to sacrifice Galactica if necessary, and keep Pegasus. That was in fact the plan, but Lee set the plan aside mainly to save the people aboard the Galactica - a good decision at the time, but a better decision would have been to have vital people on the Pegasus instead. I find it believable, though. Adama couldn't live with abandoning the civilians. Lee could. So Adama was on the rescue mission and Lee was not, initially. Then it turned out that Lee couldn't live with abandoning his father. This was not 100% logical, but, humans are not 100% logical. It rang true to me.

the true reason it happened was because they needed studio space for the cylon CIC, so Pegasus was destroyed so it set could be re-purposed

If they had the budget this would have happened, they a lot of sets for Galactica and only a few for Pegasus, I'd argue a lot of the writing is as good as it is because they were restrained and had to rely on character and dialogue so much.

It went further and further down the grimdark path because the writers were motivated by anti-American politics. I watched exactly one episode (the second), realized exactly what they were going for by giving the original Adama's decision to run rather than fight to a female civilian, and swore off it. Turns out I was right.

I really wish that people would not post massive spoilers. New people discover this series every day. But anyway, this is explained in the show. The universe is old. There has been time for this technology level to develop a hundred times.

masterpeice... only when youa re not paying attention. just in this clip alone. apollo has the idiocy to go out on intercept alone with cat. your telling me it's a masterpieve that it is aparantly normal strategy to send out two fighters alone and only re-enforce them in 3 minutes? the cylon raiders will slaughter them!!! and then move on to the rest of the vipers. remember, that back then they didnt have pegasus, so they didnt have the ability to manufacture the vipers. then why would they just throw away pilots and machines like that?

I really love how it's still slightly muted and super foreshadowing - we don't get anything like the super joyous gaelic singing music that we hear after victories, it's more restrained, with a few slightly unsettling minor transitions - and everyone's happy, except Adama, who's got a pretty serious face on, before saying "It /is/ a dream"...

That moment, and seeing the Pegasus, makes you wish you were actually there. This is the epitome of immersion into a good story.

I weeped when the brought in Pegasus, and there was no internet leaks. I was old enough to have watched the old series, so to have the linage was just amazing.
