Defending the Biblical Roots of Christianity

Күн бұрын

In part 4, we discover how both God’s promise to Abraham and the law of Moses are related to followers of Jesus today. And the apostle Paul tells us when the Law was given, why it was given, and for how long. And for my Hebrew roots friends watching this video, I pray that you really get a hold of this truth!
In this series, we’re approaching the book of Galatians with an eye for the theological themes that speak to the relationship between the Christian and the Law of Moses. Do any of the Old Testament laws apply to us? If so, in what way? What about the Ten Commandments? Has that changed under the New Covenant? What is Paul talking about in Galatians 6 when he shows us how to fulfill what he calls the “Law of Christ"?

I don't have the words to express my thanks for this series. I don't understand how my HR friends can read the same exact verses of Paul and exclaim, "See, you have to keep Torah." I feel as if my eyes have been opened after almost 20 years in the HR movement. These videos will be played over and over again, especially before I read the book of Galatians. I'm also reading "Torahism" and it seems as if you've been eavesdropping on the many Shabbats and discussions of Torah through the years. Please never lose your engaging, enthusiastic and lively way of teaching.

@@patnoon1544 Factually new covenant redemption wasnt from "doing bad things" it was from the curse that came on someone for transgressing the old covenant law. @@MandMe91 As I said in another post Christ redeemed me from the curse of sin. The Law was to Israel and was supposed to lead them to Messiah, Jesus. In Galatians the Judaizers are trying to compel them to be circumcised and follow the Law of Moses. Paul is explaining that If you choose to be justified by the works of the Law then you are also under the curse of the Law and why would they want to that when they have been justified by faith in Jesus. Hope this helps.

That was excellent, I came out of Hebrew Roots some time ago, and this is a good lesson for our understanding of the truth. One trouble of being in the Hebrew Roots movement is that it makes one feel as if one knows it all, and what could one learn from a Christion. I was doomed in that mindset, but I admitted my shortcomings and unrighteousness and started reading the New Testament for myself. I was seeing that the Christians were right about a lot of things. I have been studying every sense, and I tightly hang onto Jesus for my life and salvation. Praise Jesus, and glory to God!

@@digimike8 I was led to believe that I had to keep the sabbath, and the Holy days by a legalistic church at the time around 1983. The church was The Worldwide Church of God [Herbert W. Armstrong]. They kept a Saturday sabbath, and the Holy Days. Very strict church. That church shattered to peace's in the 1990s. Hundreds of splinter groups came out of that. I joined with a couple of them until I left it all. I kept looking for a church to replace that mindset of what I believed. Then I ran across Hebrew roots. Same mindset, but more flavor. I started out with A Rude Awakening, then skipped around into many different teachers who were teaching down different rabbit holes. They were all keeping sabbath and holy days. Most were doing Torah Portions. They were all based on the Law of Moses. They all claimed salvation through Jesus Christ but taught law of Moses. I felt so doomed because I knew what I am. Flesh and blood, and I could see my shortcomings. Law was drilled into my head, but I fell so short of it. I kept grabbing for salvation, but it was out of my reach, like I was floating in space unconnected from my spacecraft and no matter how hard I tried I couldn't reach ahold of it to get back in. Forever floating into the ether knowing I was doomed. I tried to get the group I was with to read the New Testament, but they didn't see the need to read outside of The Torah, and Torah Portions, so I read it myself. When I got to the book of Romans I read it over, and over again because I saw flaws in what I had been taught. The group couldn't see it. Then I read all the way from Romans through Hebrews I kept reading over, and over again. The rest is history with them in The Hebrew Roots. I am all in now. Not reaching for perfection in the law, but my Saviour Jesus Christ who kept it for me. My soul no more attempt to draw thy life and comfort from the law.

Thanks RL Solberg! I was able to listen to the 22:38 minutes point, but have to get to work. Will check out the rest tonight. I do enjoy verse by verse, expository teaching, and in context! Who, what, when, where, why! I think this might partly be related to what Paul solemnly warned us about when he says to not “wrangle about words “(2Tim2:14)--we should explore the entire letter and ask those 5W‘s! If we just pluck out one verse, such as the verse about “seed versus seeds“, well? We really wouldn’t be able to discern very much, right?! When I read the entire book, it’s so clear what the Holy Spirit was inspiring Paul to write. Pretty plain and clear! Also, the idea about using a chalkboard or whiteboard is a good idea, definitely helps me out. Those pictures stick in my brain for some reason! Talk to you later, have a blessed day. It was not unconditional. How is that possible when later in ch. 17 God tells Abraham he has to get circumcised along with his whole house and if they don't they are cut off from the promise? How is that unconditional? Also, Romans refutes that all Abraham did was have a mental trust in a promised provision: "18.Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be. 19.And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara's womb: 20.He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21.And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22.And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. - Romans 4 This description of Abraham's faith which justified him is one of exertion of effort, works.

@Defending the Biblical Roots of Christianity thank you for answering. More specifically around verse 15, Paul is telling Timothy how scripture (in this case Torah from my understanding) gives wisdom, and this wisdom leads to salvation in Jesus Christ. So, since HR movement doesn't deny the Messiah, but rather emphasize on the importance of following the Torah to lead a life that pleases God....how can we nuance this with Galatians?

R L, I do appreciate your theology but in order to deal with a IFB KJV only church 20 years ago, I found much of the Messianic literature very freeing and refreshing. A good friend recommended the church and on the surface it appeared vibrant but then more details came to the surface. The thing is I feel very much that ecclesiastical protocols should stem from the Torah (I Timothy 3:16) otherwise it becomes a man's interpretation on how a church should govern. It doesn't need to be mine either. It doesn't need to be the SBC, UPC, UMC interpretation either. I do agree on where you are touching on points in this series on, and here me out....you are right on what personal conversion is and should be based on. In that sense, you stand correct. You need to understand though, it doesn't touch on ecclesiastical protocols. I want to be perfectly clear that Gentile churches do not need to be culturally Jewish but it shouldn't declare anathema Hebraic attitudes and behaviors like the 4th century councils began to do. As for Galatians, the Gaelics were treating the Jewish lunar calendar to the extreme level like their former lunar festivals as they were lunar oriented as well instead of treating them in a way of looking forward in being shadows of things to come. That is totally what is missing in this discussion. Context is everything.

1 John 3:4-8 (NKJV) 4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. Many use this verse inserting “the law of Moses” (the covenant from Horeb, the “bread” Moses gave) as the benchmark. Thus, in this understanding… sin = disregard (or breaking) the “law of Moses”. But is this correct? Let’s keep reading. 5 And you know that He was manifested ---> to take away our sins, and ---> in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him. 7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested (Exodus 24:4-8 ---> John 1:14), ---> that He might destroy THE WORKS OF THE DEVIL. (Hosea 2:11 ---> Colossians 2:11-17) Hold on, if we use the “sin = breaking the law of Moses” definition… How in the world did “the devil” become "bound" to the covenant jurisdiction of the law of Moses which was blood ratified on the third day at Sinai? Oh my, when you start unpacking that rabbit trail!!

I'm not quite following you, Simon. You said faith isn't simply belief, but "faith is evidence of belief." But then you defined "faith in Christ" as "believing in Christ as mediator or judge." Am I missing something? Also, you seemed to define a believer as someone who lacks sin? What do you mean by that? Rob

@@TheBiblicalRoots I have all those answers in my Ytube videos, but later will itemise your answers. I see your problem that you recognise the promises of Abraham without the things he learned as Romans 4, as he complied with God's law by faith, which was evidence of his belief in God. Jesus fulfilled the law of Abraham by faith, which us all expressed in #1 video. My work is radical as it is directly linked to Abraham as Jesus was, neither he nor Paul started a new religion.

I genuinely like and respect Rabbi Singer as a person, Austin. At the same time, he is a poor source for learning about what Paul meant in Galatians (or about any NT passage, really) because he does not accept the NT as Scripture and it is his self-described mission to prove Christian theology wrong. Shalom, Rob

@@TheBiblicalRoots I appreciate your response. However, so many of Rabbi Tovia Singer’s opponents like to focus on him the person and sidestep his actual arguments. Why did you completely skip over the issue regarding “seed” and “seeds”, or “offspring” and “offsprings”? The word in Hebrew is identical singular and plural. Why do I never hear Christian apologists / theologians address that specific issue? How can Paul make an argument that this passage is actually about Jesus when the plural/singular does not apply? Yet he acts like it does.

@@Sefton419 I hear what you're saying, Austin! And the answer really depends on whether you consider the NT the Word of God. Christians who believe this and accept that Paul and the other NT authors give us an inspired commentary on the Tanakh. Because of the revelation of Jesus as the promised Messiah, they are able to rightly understand the Hebrew Scriptures. But more directly, Rabbi Singer is incorrect about this passage. Gal 3:16 says, "Now the promises were made to Abraham and to his offspring. It does not say, 'And to offsprings,' referring to many, but referring to one, 'And to your offspring,' who is Christ." Paul labors the point that the promise was made to a singular offspring. And just like you said, the Hebrew word זֶ֫רַע in God's promise to Abraham in Genesis 12:7 is singular. So there is no contradiction in number. Blessings, Rob

That's an interesting take, Tony. So you're suggesting that in Gal 2:16, Paul's argument is "a person is not justified by [their ethnicity] but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by [our ethnicity], because by [our ethnicity], no one will be justified'? What did you find in the book of Galatians that led you to that conclusion? RLS

@@TheBiblicalRoots Many scholars today have realised (especially with the discovery of the Dead Sea scrolls) the term “works of the law” likely didn’t pertains to the whole of the law of Moshe but oral traditions of the community in order to be a member of their community. Jewish communities had strict oral traditions or fence laws around the Torah which must be upheld to be considered an equal member of their communities. The Dead Sea scrolls have helped scholars see this truth especially through 4QMMT. They are called in Hebrew “ma’asei haTorah (works of the law). The party of the circumcised in Galatians had created an oral tradition which was, one must be circumcised (i.e., proselytised to become a Jew) to be saved and considered a full fledged member of the community of Yeshua. Converting to becoming a Jew as a full member was popular in the first century. Yeshua even deals with it in Matt 23:15 with the Pharisees. Telling them when they convert a gentile he becomes a son of hell (I’m paraphrasing). Often to the Jews of the first century, full salvation was now based on ethnic superiority for they were the true children of Abraham and the promises. Which is also why the Pharisees stressed to Yeshua how they had never been slaves for they were children of Abraham. E.P. Sanders, James D.G. Dunn, NT Wright, Tim Hegg, Rob Vanhoff, JK McKee and others have brought this out over the years. Each one has their own take on it but the idea of the term “works of the law” meaning just the Law of Moshe doesn’t fit the context or cultural setting for Jews have never believed they earned their salvation by doing Torah. They always felt their ethnicity guarantees them a place in the world to come. Of course once you completed the conversion processes and were circumcised, you were now expected to keep the law of Moshe according to their “works of the law” or community laws otherwise you’d be excommunicated. Here is JK McKees article on the topic. messianicapologetics.blog/what-are-works-of-the-law/

@@billyhw5492 this is a big distinction my friend. The issue of Galatians is not whether or not the Law of Moshe is binding because it is. They are the laws of the kingdom after someone enters the kingdom by grace in which one learns how to love YaH and his neighbor through the power of the Spirit. The issue is, one is 👉🏻not👈🏻considered a full member of the New Covenant by ethnicity or conversion to a Jew but by trusting in the work of Yeshua. The sect of Judaism Paul refers to as the circumcision party held you were not a full fledged member of the New Covenant unless you had fully converted to becoming a Jew. This is the wall of separation Yeshua tore down (Eph 2:14) men has built up by the first century. It was trust in Yeshua, plus circumcision (i.e., converting to being a Jew) for salvation. This was a man-made doctrine not found in the covenants.

Error 1: You dismiss the eternal law of righteousness for grace giving righteousness, the law of righteousness demands inherent righteousness by faith. A false choice of law and grace, as grace comes from keeping the law of righteousness, as only doers of the law shall be justified.

I appreciate you pointing out my errors, Simon. That's quite kind of you. The "false choice" of law and grace is not something I came up with. Those are the two mutually exclusive options that Scripture gives us when it comes to being justified (declared righteous) before God. "You are severed from Christ, you who would be justified by the law; you have fallen away from grace" (Gal 5:4). "I do not nullify the grace of God, for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose" (Gal 2:21). "For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ" (John 1:17). Blessings Rob

@@TheBiblicalRoots You note in your video a covenant with Abraham which is based on the law of righteousness, and keeping the law of righteousness brings grace, by transgressing the law of righteousness imputes sin, and brings us under the law of sin and death. The term law is used versus grace when it is the law of sin and death, which came in with Moses but has not gone, it has no effect if we are in Christ under grace because we obey the law of righteousness. The Jews being commented on by Paul were as Peter his example in Galatians, who as a Mosaic Jew be justified if keeping the 10 commandments always, but as he sinned he needs Christ so he can be forgiven as Galatians 6:1-10. The Pharisees had to keep the law at all times to be justified, but grace allows accidental sin like Peter, who was caught out. So to keep him under grace, not be under the law of sin and death, Paul admonished him. I have a Ytube video series called 'Myths in so-called Christianity', 28 videos which cover this topic.
