According to Tony Shalhoub, the reason Fred is always so chill is that he's completely stoned through the whole film. There are several clues throughout the film. He's always got the munchies, for one. Another is his fascination with the cleanliness of the floors. When his "pod" arrives a bit after the others, you can see a puff of smoke escape as the goo falls away from his body, indicating that he'd been toking during the ride. Another great thing about his character is that he got so used to pretending to be Asian on the show that now when the aliens gasp "Tech Sergeant Chen!" he _narrows his eyes._ A great little character beat that not many people catch. All of this came not from the script, but from the actor himself. Tony was cast because the director realized the character was thinly written, and Tony is known for coming up with wonderful stuff to flesh out his roles. (The first day of rehearsal, he showed up with a greasy paper bag, saying, "I think my character is in this bag.") :)

I read that there was a scene cut from the final with Tony actually smoking weed at the water cooler while the others were being transported.

13:03 - Sam Rockwell's scream was ad-libbed and Sigourney Weaver's reaction is real. 41:19 - "Guy Fleegman" was a shout-out to Guy Vardaman, a long time stand-in and extra on Star Trek: The Next Generation. He didn't know anything about it until he saw the movie in the theater, and says he nearly fell out of his seat. Patrick Stewart (Captain Picard on ST:TNG) had this to say: "I had originally not wanted to see [Galaxy Quest] because I heard that it was making fun of Star Trek and then Jonathan Frakes rang me up and said ‘You must not miss this movie! See it on a Saturday night in a full theatre.’ And I did and of course I found it was brilliant. Brilliant. No one laughed louder or longer in the cinema than I did, but the idea that the ship was saved and all of our heroes in that movie were saved simply by the fact that there were fans who did understand the scientific principles on which the ship worked was absolutely wonderful. And it was both funny and also touching in that it paid tribute to the dedication of these fans."

I saw it on its first run, and I remember at the end when the camera panned up over the bowing actors and settle on that shot of the sea of cheering fans, I burst into tears. I'd never seen us presented that way before, with so much love and connection, by filmmakers who were clearly fans themselves. It still gets to me whenever I see it. :`)

I was managing a movie theater in 1999 when this movie was released. We had a gentleman come in everyday for the matinee show. I finally asked him why he came in everyday. It turns out he was the grandfather of the guy who played Tommy Webber and was super proud of his grandson. Also, the original cut of the movie received an R rating. The studio thought is was so good that they cut some scenes and toned down the language to get a PG for a younger audience. That's why at the end Sigourney looks like she dropped an F bomb.

Mathesar was played by Enrico Colantoni, who's been a regular on several TV shows. He played a somewhat nerdy fashion photographer in "Just Shoot Me," a tough PI with a headstrong daughter in "Veronica Mars," a cold-blooded mob boss in "Person of Interest," and the leader of a SWAT team in "Flashpoint." A fine actor with an impressive range.

As a huge Star Trek fan I thought that this movie was a riot. I watched the series every week when it first aired. I continued to watch it in reruns. This movie plays with so many of the questions that every trekkie had. I've watched every series that sprang from the original. My dad took me to meet Leonard Nimoy when he came to make a speech in Orlando. I have always loved Star Trek. And yes this is definitely a spoof of Star Trek. As a professional actor I have worked on Monk and Veronica Mars. I had great personal experiences with Tony Shalhoub and Enrico Colantoni. They are both wonderful people.

I'm so glad that you guys loved Enrico Colantoni so much in this movie. It's honestly one of the best comedy performances in film ever. Imagine an actor seeing, "You are our last hope." on the script and somehow transforming those simple words into a delivery like that? Or getting poked in the stomach and deciding to respond with that noise and facial expression. And he does it with every line, so many little choices that end up being hilarious. Eventually you guys should check out Veronica Mars if only for him. But also because it's amazing and hilarious!

Seeing this in a theater was a special thrill -- I hope it gets shown at one of those special cinema events sometime. The screen ratio changed TWICE: we started off in old-style TV 4:3, then it went to standard screen ratio as the TV screening ended, then when the doors opened and Tim Allen saw he was standing on the edge of infinite space it widened yet more. You mentioned recognizing Justin Long from Dodgeball. There's another Dodgeball cast member in this! -- Missi Pyle, who played the "Jane Doe" alien who returned with Fred, played the Slavic dodgeball opponent with the unibrow. Both roles disguise her real-life blonde look, which can be seen in movies like Gone Girl.

So many great things with this movie. It was a love letter to fandoms. Sigourney Weaver had a moment where she clearly says "f*** that!", but what you hear is "screw that!". It was the director's little FU to the people wanting to trun it into a kids movie. There is also a moment where all of a sudden and for no reason she had the zipper of her outfot down and boobs out. There was a deleted scene where she tried to zeduce the alien. The way the aliens move and talk qas apparently the brain child of the lead alien actor. He did something like it in his audition and the director loved it so much he had them all like that. Fred (the guy with the mun hirs is supposed the be high. I think they took it out to make the movie more kid friendly. When Guy says, "is there air? You don't know!"... the original script didn't have the crew doing any checks when they landed. Tim (captain) was really into the role and argued hadd for it. The powers that be said no. So the next take they did, Sam improved that line. When the captain had to tell the head alien they lied, after a couple of takes Tim Allen had to take a break because it was so overwhelming. Alan Rickman (yes he was Snape) quipped, " Oh, my God! Hes experiencing actung for the first time."

A fun little gag would have been to have actors mouth obscenities from time to time and dub them over. The actors would notice (it would be played off like real time dubbing), and would find out it was part of the alien conversion of the TV show: television friendly censorship.

This film was released the same year as "Dogma", both films showcasing Alan Rickman's very-dry comedic chops. Tony Shalhoub says it was working out his character 'Fred Kwan' spent the event completely stoned that gave him the handle on how to portray him. Also, Kwan being minimally-'Asian', he was not put off AT ALL by the anime-sexiness of Octopus Girl. The cast will always call up for me Tim Allen playing William Shatner (legendary a-hole), Alan Rickman playing Leonard Nimoy (who resented then learned from a fan to cherish his Spock persona), Sigourney Weaver playing a mashup of Uhura & Seven of Nine, Tony Shalhoub playing the ship's engineer (originated by Irishman James Doohan with his terrible fake 'scottish' accent), Daryl Mitchell playing a Wil Wheaton genius kid, and a loving nod to all those 'red shirt' extras who are first to be killed in away-missions and ship-invasions (a few of which returned under different names to 'die' again).

for those who are curious about Tony Shaloub's character. it's weird. in the "Galaxy Quest" universe he's a non-Asian actor portraying an Asian actor named Fred Kwan playing Tech Sergeant Chen in the fictional TV series Galaxy Quest. he's also continuously high af. which is why he's always snacking. (though his thc consumption is never shown.) the character was loosely based on David Carradine. he was a non-Asian actor portraying an Asian man in the 70's TV series Kung-fu.

It also had Sigourney Weaver who was in the Alien's franchise, Tony Shaloub from movies like Men In Black, and Sam Rockwell who was Billy the Kid in The Green Mile...Cam and Zay are definitely more into the movie itself than the actors who play the characters apparently. The story line right away is what got me because our radio and tv waves are out in space… scientist, nasa, and the space communities know that our old tv shows are traveling out there in time that we can’t understand. It’s a very feasible story here that aliens would find them and have a reaction. What a good concept and story. The beginnings where the Thermians appear get me every time I rewatch this with reactors. First they appear stupid or ignorant in the lead in. Some guess in a little while that they are aliens, some not knowing at all. What a great screenplay with enough money spent on specialaffects to give us a good movie. I just don’t get tired of watching others watch the movie for the first time. Having grown up watching Hollywood movies I would never have guessed that years would pass where a generation of 20 to 40 year olds would never have seen my movies, but here you are in you tube allowing me to relive the excitement of my first watch in your eyes. My favorite characters isn’t on the ship or the aliens, but Justin Long’s a boy at Comic-Con who has specs for the ship with his friends who save the main characters and the aliens in the end with his knowledge of the ship with his friends and his fireworks shot off at the comic con community center bringing in the ship from space. A well respected movie even put in the category with the Star Trek movies and shows and Star Wars. What a great “B” cult movie classic.

45:00 - As someone who grew up on Star Trek: TOS, and all other earlier Trek related shows, I can tell you that you should definitely react to the more recent updated movies based on the franchise, starring Chris Pine as the famous Captain James T. Kirk. Those films are very well done, and the casting is amazing!! They casted all the roles with the perfecte actors, who all did an excellent job capturing the essence of the original characters from the TV show, while still putting their own personal flavor to them. "Star Trek" (2009), "Star Trek: Into Darkness" (2013), and "Star Trek: Beyond" (2016). Since you guys haven't seen the original show, you might not appreciate just how good the performances are from this newer film cast, but trust me when I tell you, they were on their A game.

This is best s/f comedy I've watched. Maybe it hasn't been accepted because The Matrix and other great movies came out at the same year 1999. There're not much reaction on this movie yet, which is sad. Great reaction, guys, thx for sharing.

Im going to leave a quote form Jonathan Frakes (Commander Riker STTNG). "I was at the CineramaDome in LA, and I saw it on a Saturday morning, or Saturday matinee. As I got out of the movie the first thing I did was call Patrick, who was in Toronto, I think, shooting X-Men. I said, “Dude, I just saw a movie that is about us and captures us like they’ve been reading our mail.” Patrick saw it that night. Then went again on the Sunday. And it was, I mean, some of the stuff in it is so on the nose and so accurate, and perfect, and funny. And Rickman. Rickman with the peeling makeup. Stuff that LeVar’s character does. I mean, it’s a favorite. I don’t know why that sequels never been made. I gather it’s encumbered with a lot of people who need money before they even shot, but this seems rife for a remake." Such an amazing movie. This and Princess Bride are the two perfect movies. It is a love letter to the show and the fans. From what I understand, the bathroom scene is based on something that happened to Shatner. You need to watch "Never Surrender: A Galaxy Quest Documentary" about how it got made. Also, that is Hans!

Fun fact: during the Chompers scene, Sigourney Weaver did not say “Screw that!” Audio edit to keep the movie more family friendly.

Great film, highly underrated by the general public, but beloved by Star Trek fans. It makes fun of some of the sci fi tropes, but you can tell the writers truly love Star Trek. I'm still shocked every time I see what an amazing cast they snagged.

Fun to see you guys debate whether it’s a spoof, because that’s precisely the thing. It’s intended more as a funny homage. It’s not really supposed to be making fun of Star Trek, albeit it seems so in some points… like mocking Sigourney Weaver repeating the computer all the time. In fact, some people when they rank Star Trek films will include Galaxy Quest in their rankings. It’s also intended to be respectful to the fans. That’s why Jason King’s character and his nerdy friends help save the day. Great reaction. One disappointment is that my favorite line got cut… wanted to see your reaction… “Miners, not minors!!” I just adore Alan Rickman. I know, I could watch on Patreon, but I’m too po’ these days. Maybe in the future. I’d be happy to support your endeavor here.

It's so fun to watch a reaction from such young people. I saw this in the theater in 1999 with my husband and we were just blown away by it. He and I were both very heavily into Star Trek fandom and it's like a love letter to all the fans and geeks out there. My husband said that it was like a fanboys wet dream. Unfortunately he passed away in 2004.

Star Trek fans love this movie. Patrick Stewart tells a great story of how he thought it made fun of Star Trek, and had no desire to see it. Jonathan Frakes called him and said “you have to go see it, in a full theater.” Stewart did, and loved it.

Hey guys, great review as always. This movie was such a great spoof of Star Trek. The running joke of the 80s and 90s was that William Shatner got too much into the Trekkie conventions, in fact there was a great spoof that he did in the 90s on SNL where he was at a Trekkie convention and just lost it, asking people why they were still living in their parents basements and that it was just a TV show. It was hilarious. I always thought Galaxy Quest got the idea from that SNL episode. I think that was why this was such a great comedy. Since Zak hasn't seen Star Trek, if you guys want to do some Star Trek reviews, you should do 2, 3, & 4. Wrath of Kahn to the Voyage Home. 4 the Voyage Home is one of the best Comedies in the space genre. However, if you haven't ever seen Star Trek, the three shows are a great intro to the show. Three was a great film for Trekkies but for non-trekkies it might not work. However the storyline is involved over all three shows. Glad you enjoyed this one it was great and so funny.

Shatner was incredibly self-centered. In fact, the rest of the Star Trek central actors never invited him to ceremonies and their own social events. You see this most in the only Star Trek film Shatner directed: "Star Trek V: The Final Frontier", which I believe is the worst of the film franchise. (Nimoy was a much better director with III & IV.)

in defense of Tonys squid girlfriend. 1. she looks human when she wants to because of the generator 2, she was a nice pink-purpleish color as a squid too, very feminine. 3. her arms and legs are covered in suckers and her tongue is probably 8" long or longer. 4. deception and disloyalty are almost completely unknown concepts to her.

It may be you're chemistry together makes watching movies fun. Whatever it is I enjoy your channel, and I finally saw the ending to Galaxy Quest. Thank you. Peace out.

Loved y'all's reaction so much. I always do. 🙂 So... I don't know that I'd consider GQ a parody, per se. I mean it kind of is, but you can tell they really loved Star Trek, so it was kind of an homage as well, kind of like Orville. As for the tech sergeant (played by Tony Shalhoub / Monk's actor), I think he was stoned the entire time. They kind of hint at it with him having the munchies through the whole adventure, but that would explain why he was so chill. LOL Anyway, thank you again for the reaction!

The fact that you don't even have to watch Star Trek to know enough to enjoy this movie shows how big that franchise really was. I feel bad for laughing when Cam reacted to the inside out monster but mostly because I saw this in the theatre and almost had to dump my popcorn because I reacted the same way. (not good with goo). I also appreciated that Zay didn't turn it on Cam but instead was giving him support with the ... not yet, not yet.... it's the first reaction I've seen from you but won't be the last... I like people that can laugh.

The reason tony shaloub (Fred Kwan/Tech sgt Chen) is acting like that is because theres a deleted scene or an unshot scene from the script where he smokes a joint in the bathroom before their pods blast off to the ship, that's why hes so unphased by everything and was by the vending machine before they blasted off, hes high the entire time theyre in space basically.
