The 3x telephoto on the S24 is basically useless. In anything other than perfect lighting, the main sensor will produce the same, or better, image quality from 3x-5x as the 3x lens. The reason the 3x was useful before was that once you get to about 6x the 3x starts to pull ahead, so between 6x-10x is when it was really useful, but now the 5x is obviously much better for that range. They should have left the focal lengths the same and just used the new sensor on the 3x. That would have made the lens very useful all the way up to the 10x with significantly better quality in suboptimal lighting to the S23. And then from 10x on it would have been the same, which, the S24 doesn't really seem to have any noticeable advantages over the S23 over 10x anyways except for in very bad lighting.
@AngryCanine10 ай бұрын
There is also a lot of software involved between the phones to help produce and clean up images, which I believe is what helps give the S24 Ultra a slight advantage, but that same software is coming to the S23 series shortly, which I believe the S23 Ultra's camera will match the S24 Ultra, and be better in zoomed in images in most lighting, or all. I don't know why they removed the 10x camera, they should have kept it, there was no reason to remove it except maybe to save some money. Most if not all the improvements on the S24 Ultra are software related, which I mentioned, that same software comes to the S23 Ultra and S23 series shortly, so we will see then if the S24 Ultra can still be better in some situations, or if the S23 Ultra will match the S24 Ultra in every situation, or be better because of the 10X zoom not having to digitally zoom in as much as the 5X on the S24 Ultra. All I can say is I bought my S23 Ultra recently, used like new, not a scratch on the screen, hardly used by the previous owner (somewhere around 2 months of light use) before it was traded in and sat in a box for several months before I got it. Saved $400 on buying a new one, and $700+ from an S24 Ultra, and from all the issues the S24 Ultra has, I am both really glad I never bought one even though I could get a colour I really want, but also feel for those who have one and hope they can be happy with it, I know I wouldn't be able to, but that is just me.

@AngryCanine10 ай бұрын
You failed to talk about the custom CPU in the S23 Ultra. It is not a normal Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU, It is specially customized for the S23 Series, or just the Ultra, not sure at the moment, but that is why you see "For Galaxy" in the name. It is specially tuned for the S23 Ultra to were it gives you much better performance then the stock CPU, and it does that without sacrificing battery life, but actually extends it, where the newer Gen 3 CPU is pretty much entirely stock, and I have seen the S23 Ultra last longer then the S24 Ultra. I don't doubt the Gen 3 is a bit faster, but the custom tuned Gen 2 For Galaxy is arguably just as good, if not slightly better in every day use. They also use the same battery, no upgrade in size, same size screen as well, but being dull and the fuzziness I heard is a hardware issue, where the dull screen may not be able to be fixed completely without forcing the screen to operate at 110%, which could harm the screen over time. The cameras are no different minus the worse setup on the S24, losing that 10X for no reason at all, as it is a feature a lot of people I know love, specially when taking really close up pictures of things. The only differences is software, with the S24 Series able to process images in some situations, better, but that software is coming to the S23 Series, as well as pretty much everything else software related, meaning at the moment, the S24 series phones are slightly better, until the update for the S23 series is released in a few days, or few weeks, and then there will be little to no difference at all, other then cosmetics, and some AI features built into the Gen 3 CPU that you will still have on the S23 series but be processed on the main CPU, being slightly slower while processing because of that, but with how good the Gen 2 For Galaxy CPU is, I don't think you would even notice. On top of that, those AI features are going to be blocked by a pay wall in 2025 anyways, so you really got to think, is spending $1950 CAD base price for a new S24 Ultra worth it for the features that are not going to stay unique to the phone as well as software, over $1600 CAD or lower for a new S23 Ultra, or $1300 or less for a used but like new S23 Ultra? The flat screen, and dull display with fuzziness that may be more hardware related, a CPU that is newer but doesn't perform any better and in a lot of cases I have seen uses more battery... Just isn't worth it unless you can't buy an S23 Ultra anywhere and you only can find S24 Ultra's. My S23 Ultra that I bought used but like new less then a month ago, so far the battery life is crazy good. I took it off the charger 16 hours ago from typing this. Currently after about 3 hours 55 minutes of screen on time, browsing facebook, taking pictures, texting friends, and watching some youtube videos, so basically not letting the adaptive refresh rate to really kick in, and using slightly less then half brightness which is plenty bright for this display in almost any situation, 78% battery remaining. My S10+ I had before this, would be under 50%, probably under 40% with the same usage. I will say I went in and enabled background limits, so no more then 2 background apps can operate at the same time, as well as going through all my apps and putting ones I hardly use into deep sleep status, and apps I do use but only here and there into normal sleep, and apps I use all the time never sleep. I also disabled RAM Plus, so it stops using part of your internal storage as virtual RAM, it is slower, and wears down the memory module a lot, and I recommend everyone doing those 3 things, 1 of which involves enabling developer mode to access those settings (background limits). I do not use battery saving mode, I refuse to go back to 60hz display, and I have done those methods minus disabling RAM Plus on my S10+ because you can't in One UI 4, only possible in One UI 5 and higher. You can do more battery saving stuff to your phone that wont effect the performance of the device other then possibly speed it up a little more as well as save more on battery, which I plan to do more of so I can max out the battery life on this phone, which is also healthy for the battery in the long run, without giving up things we, or at least I want, like a decent screen brightness, no performance limits, no 60hz cap, or anything that effects app functions. I have done all that on my S10+ and when I said how long it would have lasted so far, is with all that stuff done to it. Without that, easily would hit around 35% or lower, and sure, part of that is the battery itself, but taking that into account, still wouldn't be nearly as good. Simply put, this S23 Ultra which was bought used but like new, saved me $300 or so from a new S23 Ultra, and $700 from a new S24 Ultra, and I couldn't be happier. Not a single scratch on the screen, battery health is close to new as this phone was hardly used by the previous owner, it is also a Canadian model which matters on Canadian networks, I know because my S10+ is a US model, and only way to get updates was through manually putting updates on it through the PC using sketchy 3rd party apps as Smart Switch on PC was entirely unhelpful, and can easily brick a phone while it is in download mode during these updates, I know because I did brick the S10+, but by pure button spamming and nearly giving up, it somehow recovered and I don't know how. I consider myself a loyal Samsung mobile user, I will recommend anyone getting a new phone, to come grab a Samsung that best suits them, but I can not recommend the S24 series, unless the screen issue is fixed, then maybe, but still wouldn't with the S24 Ultra because the S23 Ultra is just way too similar, like when the S23 series gets the One UI 6.1 update, it will be at least 95% similar, and that is just not enough to justify getting the newer S24 Ultra, over a cheaper and new S23 Ultra, or even cheaper used like new S23 Ultra. Anyone is free to do what they want, buy what they want, but I personally will not recommend the S24 Ultra, period, it just isn't better then the S23 Ultra. That 5% just isn't worth spending $450-$700 more on, it really isn't, and I wish Samsung focused less on AI and more on hardware improvements... maybe next year, but even then I wont be giving up my S23 Ultra unless Solid State batteries enter the smartphone market, then maybe since those last so much longer, and don't wear out over time anywhere near as quickly as current batteries do, like lasting 10 times longer, so like a standard battery may get 4 or 5 years before showing its wear, a solid state would go 50 years before showing wear, they are crazy good, but still not yet left the testing phase, but they are close to, sometime in the next few years we could see them finally enter the market.
@lchaveztort10 ай бұрын
You're not entirely correct, this is For Galaxy as well, seems like you're hurting.
@AngryCanine10 ай бұрын
@@lchaveztort Except it isn't. Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SM8650-AB (4nm) is the CPU the S24 Ultra uses. The only "For Galaxy" edition CPU Samsung has is in the S23 Ultra. The S23 Ultra only has one CPU option, where the S24 Ultra has 2, the Snap Gen 3 or Exynos 2400, there is no extra modifications made to the Snap gen 3 CPU, it is almost entirely a stock chipset put into the S24 Ultra with minor tweaks to work with Samsung's software and hardware. The Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 "For Galaxy" edition is the only CPU option for the S23 Ultra, and so it was heavily modified from the base Snap Gen 2 the previous S22 Ultra used, to get the phone better performance, and be more power efficient, which the S22 Ultra suffered greatly with power efficiency and performance. So when I say "For Galaxy", that is the version name given to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 that is in the S23 Ultra, a special version made, or rather modified specifically for the S23 Ultra and other S23 phones only.
@voyagerdeepspaceexploration2 ай бұрын
Its not "customized", its just overclocked. But I don't mind - The 3.36 GHz gives you better singlethread performance than most devices which leads in overall better app start. And yes all the Galaxys have the same flagship CPU, so if you don't care for the camera a normal S23 is enough. Keep in mind the Ultra is very huge and heavy. Smaller battery is offset by a smaller display - Battery life is the same. Opting for the newest mobile SOC is never worth it, its some percent faster but I think they didn't even improve the IPC or clock much, its not a drastically new architecture either. The only thing they do is make the GPU bigger. Only switch to new SOC if the performance and efficiency is drastic, meaning far over 100 %.
@AngryCanine2 ай бұрын
@@voyagerdeepspaceexploration The CPU on the S23 series is a customized CPU, it isn't just overclocked. You can put a normal Gen 2 in a phone and overclock it, it wont perform as well as the "For Galaxy" edition as it specifically fine tuned for the S23 series specifically, outputting more performance without sacrificing battery life, and improving the overall efficiency. It is so fine tuned that if you put it into a different phone, like the S22 series or S24 series, it would not perform well at all, vs the standard/stock configuration of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 CPU, overclocked or not. I don't recall there ever being a CPU that has had so much fine tuning, Samsung customization basically, that gives a CPU so much performance over the standard CPU, not even Apple with their iShit phones put that much work into their CPU pairings... The S24 series has a near bone stock Snapdragon Gen 3 CPU in it, which by itself is a faster CPU then a bone stock Gen 2, in just about every way, but the "For Galaxy" edition of the Gen 2 is so good it is basically as good, slightly better in some cases then the Gen 3 the S24 series has, minus GPU performance of course. I have seen side by side comparisons of the S23 Ultra and S24 Ultra with apps being loaded up, webpages being loaded up, games and such, the S23 Ultra almost every time loads faster, even if it is only by a split second, but in game performance it falls behind because of that GPU. Hell, even the camera on the S23 Ultra is basically the exact same as the S24 Ultra, despite the camera on the S24 Ultra being slightly better on paper, but the S23 Ultra just seems to take better quality pictures in the vast majority of cases, most noticeably when zooming in, which doesn't take much, like x1.5 and onwards the S23 Ultra produces slight better image quality, which sometimes is a massive difference, including when at X100 zoom which the S23 Ultra just does way better. Even today the differences between the S23 Ultra and S24 Ultra as so little, they are almost virtually the same phone, with a slightly different CPU, and a slightly modified chassis and glass. Worth the $500+ in price difference, just for anti-reflective glass, flat edges that make it look cheap unlike the perfect curve the S23 Ultra has (I had an S22 Ultra and that curve was too much) and extra AI features that you will have to pay for come 2025 to use which all the remaining free features the S23 Ultra has, even some of the future paid features that I don't see people really using? not to me it isn't, even if I really do love that Yellow Titanium colour, where my S23 Ultra is Graphite, which was an online exclusive colour which I bought used in like-new condition so I ended up spending nearly $700 less then I would have buying the similar spec S24 Ultra, and have a phone that is probably a little over 90% the same, just a year older with 2 years less support.

i bought the s23u the other day just because that grainy display turned me off about it really. That was a massive deal breaker for me since i mostly use my phone in my bed at night with low brightness, in dark mode... Oh and that is not a software issue, it is called MURA effect and most definitely a hardware issue caused by s24u's screen technology. If you have s24u, then you have it. Some people are lucky, and their panels MURA effect is just not that apparent. But you have it, just some of you lucky ones can't see it... Also s24u is 2100 usd in my country, whereas s23u is 1500 usd (insane taxes and all). 2100 bucks is a LOT of money to play screen lottery imo. I honestly feel like there is not enough difference btwn these devices to justify that extra 600 bucks. I watched every video out there and just couldn't see any reasonable difference at all. the option to NOT have AI features is also cool lol. i normally hate curved screens and never had a curved phone before but s23u is almost flat in that regard. And i found that swiping from right or left is much smoother in s23u's display. I for one is never going to use it without a case so accidental touches are not in the equation at all. if you use gel type screen protectors rather than tempered glass ones, than applying them is also not a big deal. And then there's that anti-glare coated screen. As %99 people out there who buys s24u are already going to use it with a screen protector, and when you do that, you are going to lose that antiglare coating, so that is not a deciding factor either... I don't know. I've spent that extra cash on Magsafe accessories, screen protectors and high quality cases instead. Don't regret it. I've been using the A71 for the past 5 years, so it will be a massive upgrade either way.

You are not wrong, because the 10x camera on the S23 Ultra is not digitally zoomed in unlike the S24's 5x, which has to digitally zoom in to 100X, and loses like 10% or more of the overall image quality, no matter how much the AI processing tries to clean it up, and uses the same sensors as on the S23 Ultra, so the camera overall is a downgrade on the S24 Ultra, and those slightly better images are software/AI tuned, something the S23 Ultra and the S23 series in general will be getting so the camera will produce the same quality images, at least on the main camera, better images on the S23 Ultra with the other cameras. S24 Ultra is just not worth getting over the S23 Ultra if you take everything into account, just spending $400 more on a phone that at best is only 5% different, not taking into account cosmetic changes like the flat screen and titanium sides. I am more then happy to own a used like-new S23 Ultra that you would think is new because the screen is 100% perfect, free of scratches, and battery health I would say is still around 95% or more as it was hardly used by the previous owner. Saved me $400 on buying one new, and $700 on an S24 Ultra. No brainer choice and one I can really smile about, and anyone else should as well.

@@KZbinuseritis Yeah, after One UI 6.1 comes out for the S23 Ultra, the phones are going to be about 95% the same, the only differences being the CPU which sure is newer, but isn't tuned for Galaxy use like the S23 Ultra's "For Galaxy" version of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which gives it as good performance as the gen 3, but is more power efficient, not by a whole lot but a little is better then none or worse. Then there is the cosmetic differences, like the screen being flat and slightly less reflective and the phone itself being slightly more square and ever so slightly wider and shorter... also the screen problems which can't be totally fixed through software updates as it is partly a hardware issue. It just isn't worth spending nearly $2000 CAD on, when you can get an S23 Ultra for $1200 in like new condition, or $1500 brand new. All the software is going to come to the S23 Ultra, so not even that is going to be any different. Samsung, as much as I love them, really screwed up trying to focus more on AI then actual hardware improvements to the phone which is what we want in a new phone, not just software and differently shaped hardware and a new CPU that isn't any better then last gen.

They are talking about the S23 Ultra phone that was released in 2023 and whether it is worth buying in 2024, while they also talk about the S24 Ultra phone released in 2024 that will last until 2030. What nonsense is this?!
