Most professional and informative review of the S4 on KZbin or any other site. Other reviews repeat the same standard specs over and over but you actually did your research and delivered an amazing review! Thank you TheAngelofmusic1989!

The only review I've seen which talks about the HTC one blowing out the highlights. This is something I noticed when I compared both at the store and while watching videos, the HTC had a lot of areas with blown highlights. Whereas the Samsung rendered images beautifully without any washed out areas. I had actually wondered why I couldn't find much about it in any of the reviews. Overall a thorough review, and exactly the things I'd like to see in a smartphone review. Well done Erica !

I'm so glad I discovered your page! I must say, by a wide margin, you have the best...most detailed and relevant reviews of these high end smart phones. Bravo! As I am about to buy either the HTC One or the GS4 at full retail price (no upgrade for me) it is extremely useful to learn this level of details. Thank you! Incidentally, the fact that you are indeed very cute is a surprise bonus, like getting a decent set of headphones included in a smartphone box :-)

If you really want to know, the best thing is to measure the display like I did with a colorimeter or use a DSLR and set a very long exposure time to capture any leaking light from the display when showing a black image.

If you want to burn it ever whatsoever then go with an LCDs display, which has a much longer outlook in terms of any sort of burn in. The burn in I have right now is very light and keep in mind that I use my device all day every day as a tool for my job. So if you are not a heavy user like myself, I imagine it will take much longer to see noticeable damage. But yes, you will eventually have some wear on this display from text boxes or the keyboard or the status bar.

Quite happy with my display. But it is really interesting seeing all the comparisons and stats. Great Video Erica
@EricaGriffin11 жыл бұрын
You can't erase the burn in as it is wearing of the display. The worn parts can't be revived. If you use one of these screen testers you are only wearing the display at an equal rate and the burn in will remain. To balance out the wearing I would use the negative color mode under accessibility. Doing this will invert the less worn parts to wearing at the rate of the more norm parts. Eventually it can even out.

I do know what you are talking about. You must have the snapdragon variant of the S4. The S4 has seven automatic mDNIe modes that are each applied in a particular scenario. For example, in the gallery there is much different processing than in the UI or Launcher. The gallery Scenario called with echo 6 has a ton of sharpening. Then when applied as wallpaper you see it as UI mode without sharpening and with different processing.
@EricaGriffin11 жыл бұрын
That's dynamic contrast. That is just dimming the image, it is not really adjusting the saturation. It's meant as a power saving function. It can't be disabled.

So if you download a 1080p image it is 1080p in landscape with a height of 1080 pixels. But when you apply it as a wallpaper, the portrait resolution height is 1920. So you need an image with a pixel height of at least 1920.

These lines don't represent devices. They represent the 3 color channels of the 3 subpixels: Red, Green, and Blue. Together, red, green and blue at different intensities make up all the colors you can see. (0,0,0) black or (255,255,0) yellow or (25,100,100) greenish blue of some sort. For Gamma like I was showing you, all 3 channels on the S3 went high up (high gamma) in shadows, so their brightness was turned down to black. High gamma means dark.

I don't care what people say your review is very well informed and detailed and I really like it and it helps me think about what I should really buy, this is why people have problems with their phones and complain later on because they don't know about these fine itty bitty details and then they bitch and complain about how the phone is shit. Shut up and be glad that she's taking her time to give us a well structured review, or even better don't watch it, ungrateful...

Man.. I'm so jealous right now. When I got my Xperia Play I was enamored with the screen. As my first smartphone, it looked so much better than other mobile device screens I'd used before, it kind of blew me away. Lately I've been gawking at my friend's Galaxy S3. It's such a big screen, and it's so responsive and bright and the color is unbelievable... To know that the S4 is THIS much better, I can't even imagine what it'll be like. I'm planning on getting the Note 3 so I hope it's just as good

First thing would be to see if the image or section is really black. Where are you seeing this? I only see this on images that are not truly black. It's an issue with my panel calibration. The red channel is too bright so it shows on near black shades.

From fully off to on with a display of this resolution, you better bet that you can get a small bit of latency. Remember, the pixels ARE fully off and have to turn on again. It is different if they are not entirely off or black. So that is what Samsung did. Set pixels to 8,8,8.

Both snapdragon and exynos have scenarios. Some a tad bit different from the other but I am positive it has to do with your problem.
@EricaGriffin11 жыл бұрын
There is no problem with the phone. Even the Web browser has its own scenario and you will even see a brightness change upon opening or closing the Web browser. If you want sharpening, which is no good by the way and is quite aggressive try echo 6 > /sys/class/mdnie/mdnie/scenario in terminal emulator for android. This will apply until you restart the phone. All it does is turn on Gallery Scenario for everything.
@EricaGriffin11 жыл бұрын
Well, I have the measurements saying it's not good. There is no argument there at all. But if you like it that is all that matters. To me I am very sensitive to what is right and what isn't and so are many others so I call it terrible. If you get used to looking at wrong calibration for so long what can you expect?
@TBONEV99911 жыл бұрын
Ur Knowledge deserves accolades...:-)..And itz between True White & true black, but seriously when I used S4 & changed to HTC One I immediately noticed the difference in Display. One exceeds beyond imagination whilst Samsung are taking safer approach. But now they decided to scrap Amoled and instead go with LCD for S4 Active..lol

seeing pixels in any sort of display depends on the distance from which you look at the screen. for example, if you are sitting 8-9 ft. from your tv then you won't any pixels or subpixels even though a typical tv will have density of just 50-70 ppi. but if you give your tv screen a closer look, you will see pixels and red green blue subpixels. so what steve said was just to promote his iphones..

@EricaGriffin11 жыл бұрын
Not really. I hoped it would. I guess what really matter is how long you have the static image displayed. I now have burn in from the Web browser address bar. I have kept my phone on auto brightness since day 1 to test this theory. You will burn in at some point no matter what. =(

Yeah, I know, I just live in such a bland area. :P It's just a bunch of dark-green pines, a really white home and that's about it. I really love the S4's display, it is awesome. BTW, I think it's amazing that I'm talking to the almighty You right now. I am just a little Swedish boy making my way in life. Do you think it's cool that some random Swede watches your content? Idk much about all this pixel stuff but i think that for the S4 there are many more green pixels but they made then smaller than the blue and red, so it all works out well.
@BryanMorganMusic11 жыл бұрын
Erica, have you experienced the issue where the screen is supposed to be total black, but there's a faint reddish glow to the black sections, indicating that some of the red pixels are still barely on?
@hughhemington955910 жыл бұрын
I've really enjoyed my S4 for over six months. The only two issues I have are that the OS "nags" me when I turn the sound volume up, apparently ignoring the possibility that I'm using speakers instead of ear buds. And, with button(s) on both sides, I can't easily use the bubble level app.

A few questions for you Erica. Why do you think companies don't make phones perfectly calibrated to gamma 2.2 & stay with sRGB, perfect dot spacing & perfect triangles without any over or under saturation? There are those that want the exaggeration of amoled & there are those that want the a little more realism in the HTC, but is there a market for those that want a perfect display?
