Bit of trivia. The fake Duke of Anjou was played by Sir Tim Bevan. He with Eric Fellner created Working Title Films which produced both films Elizabeth films. Her "game of suitors" kept everyone on the leash, hoping to become her consort. So no one could pursue war against her. This bought her country time to work on its internal problems.

I think if English law had not given a man absolute ownership over all his wife's property and literal person that Elizabeth probably would have been happy to marry. But for her getting married means she literally handed her entire domain to someone else who was not born to be monarch. I know it was after her passing that the laws were put in that spouses have no right of rule and no right of succession, because of the problems caused during her reign by the old rules.
