Take into account the gas, travel time, and placer cost, and he's making less than $3/hr (of coarse this isn't including what he gets from KZbin, selling rocks/other minerals, etc.). A person definitely needs to consider it an enjoyable hobby first and foremost at that rate, anything else is a bonus.

Hey, why not have a hand-held metal detector or wand for your large rocks? Just to a quick wave over the large stuff, if it goes off then check it. It would take a couple of seconds and it gives you peace of mind.
