Wonderful beauties! Dan, when I started prospecting, I bought some cristaline gold ore samples in different matrixes, just to know what my eyes to train for. One sample was "gold in calcite" from the north western italian alps, from Aosta. I put a part in ordinary muriatic acid and etched part of it free. I harvested wunderfut gold cristals standing on the calcite. Those crystals looked roundish alike what you are finding right now. Find the vein, get the good chunks and etch the gold free. No need for fire essay then. Have fun and stay crazy!

I think I would take a good look at the transition area between the quartz and the calcite. That Crazy Crusher is one slick gizmo, but I bet it costs a few hundred clams. I pan a creek where the source of the gold is unknown because it's in a designated wilderness area that has closed to commercial mining since the 1800s and so no exploration has been done. I've hand crushed many samples in search of the source material so I would know what to look for upstream, but so far I've come up empty. It may be a soft material like calcite and therefor the gold is completely liberated from the material by the time it gets downstream where I'm panning but I won't know for sure until I can find a piece of gold in host rock. A gizmo like that would certainly improve the odds by enabling me to crush many many more samples in much less time. I'll have to look up the cost for consideration.
